What do you mean you will have to cut them?
542  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive ASICMiner Cube Setup on: December 20, 2013, 08:37:01 PM
I think it is more about the amps this pulls. I've seen 280-360W being talked about for this when OC'd, so you are looking at 23-30 amps on the PCI-E connections. Some PSU's are built for that, some are not.

I'm using a CX500 that lists 38A on one 12V rail.

Where as something like this 650W has 2 12V rails, but only 22A per.

That makes sense.  The one that I was trying to use had 2 12V rails, but only 18A per.

The one I am using now has 4 12V rails at 25A per.

I'm not sure if anyone else is having issues like that, but mine wouldn't work properly with a 630W supply.  It runs flawlessly at 38GH/s ever since I switched to the 850W supply.

Seems like over-kill with that supply for one cube, but maybe the 650W is just not cutting it?  Doesn't make any sense to me.  Huh

I was thinking the same thing - 648W seems like more than enough power, and I forgot to mention I have it on "low" clock speed as well.

I guess I'll try a more beefy power supply, maybe the 850W from Corsair...

Yeah, I had mine on "low" clock speed when it was plugged into the 630W, but it would shut down every few minutes.  Changed the power supply to the 850W and it has ran like a champ ever since.  Not sure if the power specs are just a little off, or if it just hates some PSUs.  The 630W that I tried was running two 5850s just fine so I would think it would have been good enough for a single Cube Undecided

Woot woot!  Scottrade came through and I got the deposit this morning.

Looks like I will be the proud owner of a shit ton of riser cables next month Cheesy

My gf was a tech support at Apple.

Hire this guy.  His GF used to be tech support at Apple so I think he best fits your dumbass description.

You guys are only mining scrypt? Which is easier sha256 or scrypt for mining? Or are they both the same on new currencies. I will only be mining alt coins (sha256) because the hardware seems easier and can mine new currencies easier right?

Wrong.

If you are mining SHA256 with a GPU, you are doing it wrong.

Scrypt only for GPU mining.

This is a scam.

Do not use this or you will lose some coins.

Contains a Trojan that will send a transaction from your Bitcoin-Qt wallet to his address.

Emphasized again because clearly my previous warning was not heeded.
551  Economy / Marketplace / Re: BitBot Faucet Farmer | ALPHA 4 | FREE on: December 20, 2013, 04:29:02 AM
the "faucet farmer" has a trojan virus, i tried to use it and a hour later all my bitcoin was withdrawn out of my account

Maybe I should have made my bold red post in size 500 ?

I clearly warned of this...

its good first time I am writing out of gambling section with you what is FNMA is this related to bitcoin or something else  Grin

Fannie Mae's stock symbol.

They are one of the largest, most profitable companies in the World.  I sold some shares of them that I had on Monday so that I could pay for a purchase order for 500 PCIe Riser Cables (for scrypt mining) at a ridiculously discounted bulk order price.

Now I am going to get screwed out of that because they didn't stick to their normal 2-3 business days timetable on releasing my funds.

553  Economy / Lending / [CLOSED] Any nice people out there want to loan $1540 USD? on: December 19, 2013, 03:44:31 PM
Scottrade decided to stick me in the butt by taking 7-10 days instead of the normal 2-3 business days that I had been accustomed to when transfering funds from my brokerage account to my bank account.

I have a purchase order from Shenzhen for a boat load of PCIe risers, but I am supposed to pay tomorrow.  Scottrade said my funds should be in my bank account on Saturday or Mornday.  Need to Western Union a payment to them tomorrow to ensure the price that I got on the goods.

Figured I would try here, but I know that it won't end well, so I am going to be giving some friends and family after work so hopefully someone comes through.

So angry with Scottrade right now.

GRRRRRR

So I sold some of my damn FNMA shares (Fannie Mae) on Monday to try to get some funds in my bank account to pay for a purchase order from Shenzhen.... but that shit is due tomorrow and apparently Scottrade wants to keep my shit pending until Monday.  Hopefully they let me extend or I am SOL on a boat load of cheap PCIe risers...

Meanwhile FNMA is +5% today and I am hating life

Hey guys, all fixed now had to buy a separate router then linked through that.

Has anyone looked at the USB port on these, anything you can do with it?

Congrats!  The USB port is only for making updates to the board I believe... they are not made to connect to a computer via the USB at this time AFAIK.
556  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive ASICMiner Cube Setup on: December 18, 2013, 11:48:21 PM
My cube just arrived, I'm in two minds now about whether to sell it and buy bitcoins with the £££ or to set it up at the moment. Did some calculations, then realized the variables were so uncertain, and there are so many of them it was nearly pointless to even try to project profits. Also very quickly worked out that most 'online calculators' for mining profit (that I found) are pretty bad; there's much more unsupportable linear variable assumptions (in such an inherently chaotic system) than provable ones and many miss out crucial variables completely, giving very warped projections. Especially in recent days, it would imply I'd need a ten fold increase in the value of Bitcoin atm to make this even worthwhile in maaany months.

But I find the idea of mining really fun since my computer is on 24/7 anyway. What would you do? Smiley Selling on ebay for ~£1000 + each still ...

The thought has definitely crossed my mind to sell it.  I listed mine on Craigslist for $1200 and got three responses... would have been enough to buy enough BTC to more than double my investment.  However, after I got it up and running I decided that I definitely needed to mine with it for a little bit.  Still might sell it in the next few weeks, but it will probably be after the first of the year.

Since I'm obviously going to at least test it tomorrow a couple of questions:

1) If I go to a local computer hardware store and buy a cheap second hand ~500W PSU with two 6pin PCI-E connectors will that manage to run it? What PSU specs would you recommend for a single cube (I notice most posts in this thread are from people with multiple cubes, few are about smaller power ones for singular use)

2) If I plug my cube into my substantially higher wattage (900W) PSU I have here is that going to potentially damage the cube or will the PSU/cube handle the power output to be just what a single cube needs?

I have a feeling I'm going to be so satisfied with it once it's set up I'll keep it for the novelty factor, but we'll see tomorrow when I've slept on it and (maybe) got it running Cheesy

Oh and thanks for the great guide! I'll send a donation shortly.

1)  I don't know if I would trust it.  I first tried with a 630W Antec PSU.  It did not run one Cube effectively.  It would randomly power off after a few minutes, however this was before I had it properly set up.  Not sure if I am going to try it again now that it's set up right or not but I might.  Right now it's using a 850W PSU that I was using in a Scrypt miner that is currently out of commission until after Christmas... my wife invaded my mining space Sad

2) I sure hope that it won't hurt the PSU since I am using an 850W Cheesy
557  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive ASICMiner Cube Setup on: December 18, 2013, 10:06:02 PM
Initially when I received the cube, without any fiddling I had 8 x's, see my previous posts, then after the first time I opened it and tightened the screws I went down to 1 x, now I've opened it a further few times, not over tightened the screws but just made sure they weren't loose and I re-arranged the blades and am now back to 8 x's, plus the x's are always in the same row, so the problem must be the board, I have spoken to the seller and he is awaiting word back from the supplier, hopefully gets sorted soon!

ohhh, that might be better news for ya than a broken blade... you should get a replacement blade and a new main board, so you could run 7 blades (I think?) for the price of 6.
558  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Best rig to build for $160? on: December 18, 2013, 08:52:23 PM
But with current btc/usd prices,  wouldn't he end up with more btcs by simply buying them?

I know that's not asking the question that was asked, but depending on the end goal of buying the card (educational vs beginning to his btc empire) buying btc could be a legitimate alternative

also 7790s run 125 at newegg and hash around 170 to 190 kh/s

Depends... if you get a used 5850 for $80, that same $80 would get you .147btc (at 544/btc)

Based on LTC/BTC conversion of 0.02762 BTC  per LTC, and the current mining calculation of 340kH/s you could earn .11LTC per day (or about 0.003btc)

So... in (0.147 / 0.003) 49 Days you would break even not factoring in electricity.  In the meantime you could use the profits to buy another card at around the 30 day mark and then double your hashrate.

Mining is not always about ROI so much as it is about having a hobby and converting electricity into coins.
559  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Anyone else bought high? Worried? Still holding strong? (I bought in at $1080) on: December 18, 2013, 07:48:09 PM
One strategy is to buy in thirds...

Example:  If you wanted in with $10,000 when it was at $1000, then you should have only bought 3.333 @ $1000... now you might have ended up seeing your next threshold as $1200 hit and buying more (2.777 @ $1200), but then you would have still had money left over in the $600 range (5.556) to buy more and your average cost (~$857) would be lower.

It certainly can help, especially if you buy and then immediatley see a large crash.  Like if you were to have bought your first third in the $800 range on the down-slope, and then ended up seeing sub-$500 last night and getting more.

I am trying to use bfgminer as a proxy, I have the run parameters all set for connecting to BTCGuild but when I run the batch file bfgminer it says "Pool 0 is hiding blocks from us" and promptly closes. Anyone know how to fix that? Here is how I am running bfgminer:

bfgminer.exe --http-port 8330 -o http://stratum.btcguild.com:3333 -u <my worker username> -p x

Thanks!

You've gotten farther than me with bfgminer... I have the exact command line but mine says "looking for device, press [M] to add device, [Q] to quit" and then if I press M it closes.

I might try messing around with it later tonight, but I am happy with Slush's pool for now.  Just glad to have the damn thing running at 97% efficiency.
