Thank you for this great tool! I love it! :-)

I just had an idea: How about one could highlight a line in the orderbook? Like clicking on 11.0 and 11.0123 and 11.2 and those entries would be, well, highlighted. Click again to undo.

Why? I do several small orders, and try to adjust to the changes in the orderbook. Highlighting my own orders, for example, would help a lot for the overview.

Cheers!

We got some activity going on here

An instant 2% rise is always a nice sight.
Also, nice wall at 11.21

Naming a piece of hardware that acts like an encrypted wallet? Call it the homer.

Because

1. even an idiot can now use it and be secure
2. one of the earliest authors deserves some credit. Shoulders of giants, and so on.

Sorry, already taken:

What I still didn't get:
How did they find MBknight?
Something with a USB stick, cat pictures and all. So they recovered deleted (but not overwritten) pics of cats on the USB stick used for the extortion. So? Where is the link from random cat pics to him? Nevermind it weren't his cats, but from a neighbor.
Were those cat pics online, and they found the same pic again?

/CSI mode on:
Did they extract the DNA from the pics, run it through the dog-poop-DNA database, found out which dog had a fight with the cat, then followed the dog via satellite right to MBknights home?
/CSI mode off

They were looking for links to Bitcoins, and had already raided Brown in 2009 (it was Secret Service both times). They are probably fairly familiar with Brown's activities.

if it went like that - leave the innocent cats out of that!
Doesn't anybody think of the cats?!?

Wonderful!

Joe, I tried to visit Room77 when I was last in Berlin a couple of weeks ago, but unfortunately it was closed (this was around 2pm). I would have gone later but some of my friends are vegetarian. It'd be nice if there was a website or some other place where we can see what's on the menu.

Good luck!

Room77 opens at 3pm normally.
Also: I eat the cheese nachos for more than a year now - every fkn time! :-)
No, people have no clue what awesomeness they will receive if they haven't been in the Room before!

Let us know when you are around next time, there'll be some of us around!

You can sell your BTC to me.  Grin

Well..
I plan to contact many china/hongkong based e-shops, like dealextreme and all, to suggest them to accept payments in Bitcoin.

Let me know what volume you would provide.. :-P

so you can only link a customer to a payment via the paid amount?

Yes.

Only the EUR value of the purchase goes into the books.

Alternatively one can book the BTC onto one account and declare the value of that ballance according to the exchange rate at the time of the tax declaration. This makes more sense when one starts to also pay for business expenses in BTC.

We will upgrade the wallets of the bars / restaurants with nfc chips so the waiters can just walk up to a table, tell the amount to be paid, transmit the address and once they walked back behind the bar they can already check if the payment is on the way. Unconfirmed transaction on the blockchain is enough.

Works fine.

Joe

Maybe it would make sense to automatically save the used conversion rate when receiving a Bitcoin payment? The schildbach client obviously knows the rate, so it could write it into a simple text file too.
I just imagined the horror when a tax guy sees your bitcoins in your tax declaration, and wants to know every single conversion rate for every of those 749 Bitcoin payments.. It probably wouldn't even be possible to find out the "24h mean exchange rate" from a month ago?

This is awesome. Next time I get to Berlin I will make sure to buy something.

Now we need the same in Munich.

Could you explain how it is done?

How it is done:
Joe runs the ROOM77, and accepts Bitcoin for two years now. So he knows his stuff. He is in touch with his fellow shops, bars, restaurants and neighbors. Being enthusiastic about Bitcoin, it was inevitable to turn them to Bitcoin - one after one! :-)

Yes, I think this is the way - Talk to the people. This is much better "advertising" than large billboard ads!

Yes, exiting stuff happens here, Berlin Bitcoin Kiez.
..and this is just the beginning!

Dear fellow china-interested and chinese bitcoiners,

I plan to contact many china/hongkong based e-shops, like dealextreme and all, to suggest them to accept payments in Bitcoin.

For me, these companies are the perfect next step for the bitcoin economy: They would greatly profit from accepting bitcoins (tiny fees, no chargebacks, potentially enlarged customer base, seting apart from competition), and Bitcoin would instantly gain a lot of publicity.

I need a bit of help to understand how economy would currently work with Bitcoin in China.
The main point would be how to exchange bitcoins to Renminbi, from a e-shop point of view.
The only two exchanges currently doing this is the chinese MtGox branch and btcchina.com. The former has several days in a row with no trades, the latter has a typical volume of less than 500 btc per day. Both seem too low for serious business, where the profit margin probably is on the low digit percent range.

- Is there a way to directly convert bitcoins to Renminbi which I didn't find?
- Converting bitcoins to USD or some other currency, is there an easy way to receive Renminbi with paying less combined fees than with paypal?

There are dozens of these e-shops. I am sure a few of them would listen to what we have to tell them. Is there a realistic way for them to gain from Bitcoin? Or is it too early yet?

Thank you for your thoughts and info!

Akka, thank you for your input!
I didn't divide it into chapters yet - sounds very good!
So, when writing a mail or ticket or similar, I would better just get their attention (mail subject?) and interest, in only a few sentences? And just add a "feel free to contact me for more details and help"? And then wait for them to bite! :-)

So, less is more, once again!

Also, this is always a good starting point:

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Public_relations
Quote
Public relations is about how Bitcoin is presented to the world. The mathematical foundations of Bitcoin minimize the level of trust necessary to use it, but for anyone who isn't interested in cryptography the strength of the Bitcoin brand is more important.

This page lists some community-developed talking points, so if you'd like to promote Bitcoin consider using them.

1556  Bitcoin / Project Development / How to approach companies right? on: November 13, 2012, 01:22:51 PM
Hello everybody,

I didn't find such a thread, although I am sure it must be here somewhere..

So, I plan to contact a lot of companies, one by one, to tell them why they should accept Bitcoin as a payment option.
I chose the chinese electronic wholesale market, like dealextreme and similar:

- I bet they have a problem with chargebacks
- International business with high fees everywhere, Paypal being the sole payment option mostly
- Highly competitive market, with dozens of competitors to set apart from
- Low margin I presume

So, many arguments for using Bitcoin are very obvious here:

- new market: Bitcoin people
- new market: everyone without Paypal
- set yourself apart from the dozen other sites
- substantial profit boost with no chargebacks and no fees (for them)

From another thread long time ago I remember the idea to use "How to resolve the chargeback problem" as mail subject.
I will try to write a short, precise, objective mail. Full contact info. Offer help and advice.
Having some good-sounding name behind me would be a bonus I guess: "Member of The Bitcoin Foundation" will be the only one possible for me though.

So, any hints and ideas?
I feel this is a hit-or-miss try. Screw it up, and they will delete the next mails for the next year without reading.
I easily found more than 70 of those chinese/hongkong based sites. For now I think I should not post them here?

Thanks for input,

Ente
1557  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANN] OnionBC - Anonymous online wallet on: November 13, 2012, 01:09:32 PM
The fact that so many scams happened and so little were resolved (none?) makes bitcoin users careful (yeah, I can dream at least!).
Assuming that you don't want to reveal your real identity, only one thing can help you with reputation: time. If OnionBC has been around for years, the risk is somewhat small to lose what you send there, as long as it is not a large payment which triggers the scam mode.

Hints, to at least make your service plausible:

- Why do you think a TOR based wallet is necessary? One could as well use TOR to mix manually, via the many large wallets available. For free, mind you.

- How is the mixing done technically? When? WIth which external/internal wallets?

- Such a service makes sense and becomes somewhat more plausible when the legit profit is higher than the total coins deposited. No, this is not a question, but you may answer nevertheless

I don't intent to speak for or against you. I wish you luck, and hope it all turns out for the better for everyone involved!

[..]
2.  (extra point) As we know, Bitcoin users of all backgrounds have a tendency to not trust anyone or anything but themselves.  For this reason, they may not be inclined to trust this device that could've been malciously designed, or tampered with to produce keys that can be predicted by someone else.  However, if they can use any application of their choosing to upload their own source of entropy, the device would have no choice but to use the user's trusted entropy instead of its own.  Not to mention that users doing this would be much better prepared to create paper backups and watching-only wallets.
[..]

Excellent point!
I didn't even think of this yet. But now I fully agree!
I would be wary to trust my long-long-term bitcoin savings to anything. My paperwallet works and is pretty secure. If I can import my own keys I would feel much more secure to put larger amounts of Bitcoin into a third-party-device.

So, what is the niche for this hardwarewallet?
-Small amounts and amounts to spend on burgers and beer: android, bitinstant, mtgox
-Long-term and large amounts: offline (paper) wallets

the countdown will be interesting

ten blocks . . . . . . . . .
nine blocks . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . .
. . . .  . . .
one block . . . .

Happy Halving Day!!

..with totally random waiting times in between!
Will you be able to have a beer in between each block? How will you divide the "10 minutes", drink it all as fast as possible, or be slow and hope you have those 10 mins? I see some fun block-games coming! :-)

Absolutely!
I wondered too why Armory wasn't mentioned yet.
You want security? Go Armory! :-)

And yes: At this time in the development of clients, of hardware and Bitcoin in general, standardtizing is a top priority! We are too small to already fall apart.
Thank you, someone42 and etotheipi for your offers and work toward a secure (hardware) standard!
