After considering the criticism of my Armory Pi setup, I spent the day learning serial ports, (more) python, and Armory. I'll release the codes tomorrow, but my solution is pretty sweet. I disabled the serial terminal and replaced it with a program that listens for unsigned transactions. When it sees one, it unlocks the wallet with the passphrase entered on the Pi's own keyboard, signs the transaction, and sends it back over the serial port. The other modification is to Armory, specifically the first offline transaction screen. Along with "Save as file" and "Copy to clipboard" options, there is now a "Transmit over serial" button, which does just what it seems. When it receives the signed transaction back, it automatically advances to and fills the text box on the transaction broadcast screen.

All this required surprisingly little code, but I need some sleep right now!

I will elaborate on why I think an encrypted backup would be a good idea, although I do agree with everything you said, to some extent.
I do not own a safe, so if someone were to break in my house and get to the paper backup, the funds would probably be gone before I would realized it had been stolen. So my idea is to have hdd backup of the wallet with a strong passphrase, and a single copy of a paper wallet with a weak enough passphrase that I could bruteforce it in a decent amount of time in case I would forget it, but would give me enough time to clear the funds out if someone were to steal it. I hope that makes sense.

etotheipie, would it be possible to add the root key + chain code to the "backup individual keys" option, so it can be easily saved to a file? I would like to encrypt it with a password me/my family knows and print it out. This way if a burglar found it it wouldn't be so easy to sweep the funds. Or even better yet, have the option making an encrypted paper backup, but that would be probably much more time consuming to implement.

Nur so zur Info: Alle LED Chips kommen aus China, nur die einen haben gute Chips mit vernünftiger Ansteuerung und andere haben schlechte Chips mit fetter Übersteuerung (Stichwort: Ausbrennen)!
Habe selber hier 3 noname Spot LED Lampen a 4Watt die nur noch kurz angehen oder Flackern, nicht weil die Chips Kaputt sind, sondern die Ansteuerung schrott ist. ( Btw.: 3 Defekt nach ca. 80 Stunden bei einer Lieferung von 8 Lampen!!!)

Mein Tipp: Glühlampen weiternutzen und ab Mitte nächsten Jahres noch einmal umsehen oder dann erst Kaufen.
Und vor allem erst einmal eine Kaufen und schauen ob die Lichtfarbe einem zusagt. Selbst warmes LED Licht ist viel Weißer als das einer Glühlampe.

Energiesparlampen kommen bei mir nicht ins Haus.
1. Schlechtes Licht (Geringes Farbspektrum)
2. Teilweise schlechte Lichtausbeute (Deswegen werden sogar einige Leuchtstofflampen genauso verboten wie Glühlampen!)
3. EM Felder (Genauso schädlich wie ein Haus unter einer Hochspannungsleitung +- )
4. Flackerlicht
5. Schadstoffbelastung durch Ausdunstung.
6. Schadstoffbelastung durch Fehlfunktion/Bruch
7. Sondermüll
8. Hohe Material und Energiekosten bei der Produktion.
9. Verwendung von zu vielen Seltenen Rohstoffen.
10. Geringe Lebensdauer (Bedingt durch das Ein und Ausschalten), (Unter Laborbedingungen aber besser als Glühbirnen)

Can confirm I got the same behaviour on Linux Mint (debian variant) ... for me it was because I had a custom bitcoin.conf file which I removed and the error went away. Then I put the bitcoin.conf file back and I then went through commenting out individual lines to identify the culprit and discovered it did not like at least the line

which when commented out stopped the repeated connect/disconnect behaviour. Hope that helps.

1. Gibt es bessere LED Lampen, welche leider auch Teuer sind aber dafür lange halten und

2. Sind sie Lamoen für den HAushaltsgebrauch noch nicht wirklich ausgereift.

z.b.: Liegt die aktuelle Lumen/Watt ausbeute beu 120 Watt/Lum und in der "Normalen" E27 / E14 Fassung gibt es offt Wäremeprobleme. Grade bei geschlossenen Fassungen. Wo die Glühlampe noch heitzen konnte ist die LED Elektronik empfindlicher.

Unter 0°C kann die zur Blinkerschaltung werden (Kondensatoren) und ab 80°C schaltet die Schutzschaltung ab (Wenn den überhaupt vorhanden)

Viele vergessen das auch eine LED Lampe Heiß wird.

Trotzdem ist so eine Sammelbestellung zu beführworten wen mann dadurch die Lampen günstiger bekommt. Nur eben "Welche" ist hier die große Frage.

So ca. ab 20 Euro kosten die schon...
Eine COB mit guter Rundstrahleigenschaft und sehr viel Warmweiß mit ca. 800Lm und Dimmbar in einer E27 Fassung und einer Form die auch nutzbar ist wäre interessant.

Eine gute Kerze für den Kronleuchter wäre aber auch nett.

While keys are more secure than passphrases, they won't protect you in the case we are talking about.

If your system is compromised enough to have a keylogger, it is more than likely compomised enough for the attacker to use your ssh keys. They would just record you password for unlocking the ssh key (assuming you set a password) and use that key instead of the password.

I don't think having your offline system connected like this to a computer that is connected to the Internet can be considered safe.  There are some other hardware wallet implementations being worked on where restricted communication happens over USB. Allowing a full remote login into the rpi is too risky IMO

Hmm, I've never seen it happen in linux.  I guess my HDD just doesn't get overwhelmed like that.  However, the disconnect-reconnect fluctuations are a symptom of the problem, not the cause.  Perhaps I should add a mechanism to disable the flickering if there's too much...

The real problem is why it's taking longer than 10s to do something that normally takes 0.2 ms.  My guess is it isn't a "legitimate" failure (HDD taking 2500 times longer than normal), it could be an infinite loop in the readBlkFileUpdate method, or it's somehow inducing a rescan when it's only supposed to be doing a quick update.  The debug output should tell me the last line that was run in readBlkFileUpdate, and also tell me the state of a bunch of different variables at that time.

Die wirklich kreativen und engagierten Leute haben dieses Forum nach kurzen Vorstössen längst wieder verlassen. Auch ich bin nur noch hier um mich über die dumpfe Verbohrtheit der Zocker und Spekulanten zu amüsieren, und um kopfschüttelnd zu registrieren wie die bislang beste Chance auf gesellschaftliche Veränderung langsam aber sicher zerstört wird.
