1561  Economy / Services / Re: Introducing the Bitcoin 100: A Kickstarter for Charities on: November 11, 2012, 10:05:47 AM
I am starting again to contact NGOs to accept Bitcoin as donation option.
So, BitPay would be the best option for them, I think:
https://bitpay.com/bitcoin-for-charities

Now, not every NGO and Charity is a registered "US 501(c)(3)", which is the criteria on the page for having the fees released. May that be up for discussion, when an NGO clearly is non-profit and charitable, but not registered as a US501?

Not that such little fees would make a huge difference, I just want to make sure I won't have to backpedal later.

On another note:
Phin, you are getting slow on this. You might as well fall over and start rusting altogether!
Hereby I get the things in my own hands now!

I agree that coblee is a 'nice guy', but I also find it somewhat strange that he is being praised for doing something other than what was stated in his PPT rules.

If he is indeed a 'man of honor' for paying investors back out of his own pocket, then what of the people that give more importance to honoring the exact wording of an initial agreement (regardless of whether that results in a worse situation for investors or not)?

I guess noone was forced to take the bitcoins he paid out of his own pocket without being obliged to do that.. :-P

we're also nearly at the end of the bull flag (over the entire history of bitcoin) - less than 2 weeks away by my calc. that should spark a massive move - probably up. might go down once more before then though

Around two weeks? Falls together with the block halving then. Which suggests it will go up at that point.
Well, but.. what exactly means "bull flag" in this context?

Edit:
Reading helps:

For me, it's not a celebration unless the Bitcoin price goes up when the block reward drops. My guess is it will go up for a bit and then back down as people that have invested start selling.

..but you do see the significance in this event, no? Bitcoin has little milestones - this one of the huge ones! :-)

I had similar plans, for a Bitcoin "vault". It was more aimed at companies, for automatic tx signing. With focus on hardware security (IDS, heartbeat, key purging etc). Heavy use of PKI. With a custom ruleset for automatic signing, manual approval and selfdestruction.
Interested in a "corporate version"? I bet a lot of the hardware and software could be used for both!

I've been thinking about such boxes after I've been hacked on Linode. It may be standard computer with minimal linux distro and custom software with extremely limited interface to the rest of the world and with possibility to define own rulesets will make attacks much harder. At this stage we're working on standard wallet which hopefully fit needs of the most users, but later we can think about other related projects as well...

Sure, it is "easy" to build such a box. And you bet most big players around here have.
But building such a box from scratch for this use, custom hardware, custom hardened software, (close to) no attack vectors from outside even when under physical attack, I think there is a market. And from building one to building a dozen it's no big difference.

Yep, one after another! Maybe we'll do something together later then!

How can we be sure that some reseller isn't slipping us a modified version and what could he potentially do with that approach?

Yes, this may be possible issue. Malicious distributor can buy few devices, make alternative PCB, use modified firmware and pack it with "official" casings. There's just a small chance that customers will notice the difference. Buying the device from trusted distributor would be better choice than ordering it from random guy on Silk Road.

Technically this is not a big problem as device itself cannot communicate with the world on its own. So as far as user will connect that hacked stick into official release of Bitcoin wallet (Electrum, Multibit), the chance of a theft is minimal (as far as official clients will cross check signed transaction if it has not been modified by the stick itself).

By the way, there has been successful hacks with modified USB mouses (given to company employees as a gift). Mouse acting as mass device with autorun file and 90% of Windows users are screwed. This is a problem of "universal serial bus", unfortunately using USB is the only reasonable choice if we target to common users.

That's also the reason why we're building Raspberry Pi shield for hardcore geeks; it is much easier to recompile everything from sources to be sure there isn't any malicious code.

How about we reduce the "talking" between the wallet and the computer as much as possible?

The same problem is/was with electronic banking and tan(-passwords). It is now solved via a small device which signs a transaction (via your banking card, which you put in). The bankingsoftware/bankpage produces a challenge. It comes as a "flicker code", which the device reads in directly from the screen. You see the transfer details on the devices' screen to verify. The device then "signs" the "transaction" and shows a generated tan on its screen. You type the tan into your software/page.

The software easily finds out if anything was altered, because then the generated tan doesn't match, and/or the info on your (infected) computer and on the devices' screen don't match.

I love that thing! Quick, easy, and pretty cheap hardware - five photodiodes and some software.

Wow, now that's quite a few suggestions here! :-)

For intentional confusion:
"I'm paying with my kee today!"
(or kii or similar spelling)

Or, if you want to overdo it:
Kryptonite! ..the nemesis of all superbanks.. ;-)

I too like mineral/stone names.
Quartz, Obsidian, Turquoise, Garnet, endless possibilities!

Great project!
It doesn't matter much if it'll be ellet, bitcoincard or 'popsicle', but we surely can use a tiny, secure, easy [cheap? choose three out of four] Bitcoin wallet for the average user! At least as an alternative to smartphone wallets, which I won't fully trust ever.

I didn't work on it lately, the current state is a concept on paper.

Why are people dumping at all?
If they want cheap coins [or dollar], they should dump in smaller amounts and wait for the orderbook to grow back.
If they want to influence the price, they should dump a good part, and leave the rest of it as an order.

But now, that guy paid up to 11.22 and the charts now look just like before, under 11..

This only makes sense if he fears the price will constantly rise  in the next hours and won't fall back to the current price at all?
..or just a bad trader?

Soso.
Warst du schonmal beim Berliner Bitcoiner [jeden ersten Do; 19:00; Room77 Gräfestr.77 Kreuzberg]?

After "THE September announcement" and "Bitinstant paycard" everyone should be a bit more cautionous with self-imposed deadlines.. ;-)

For the record, Bitcoin Foundation was announced in September, just as promised.

Actually yes, you are absolutely right!
Gavin didn't expect and wish for so much attention and expectations before the announcement, though..
The "deadline" given here was meant differently than it is now made of, I feel..

Then again, bitcoins are trading at $10.?? per USD. Ten times the fiat issued by the largest and most powerful country the world has ever seen. Either bitcoins are WAY over priced ,or we have something here that is more revolutionary than the invention of the PRINTING PRESS. (Oh the irony).

..you shouldn't put too much weight in the absolute price. The relative price movements are much more interesting. If you want to focus on the absolute price, watch the mining costs/difficulty and emission rate..
Or, from a different point of view: How much would change if everyone agreed to make the dollar tenfold as "valuable"? You take existing banknotes and cross out the last zero. Even easier with electronic accounts. Same with price for goods and Forex exchange rates. Maybe call it "nDollar" from then on.
So, what would change? Nothing.

Is the Yen better or worse than US$? Come on, 80,000 Yen for one ounce of gold? Sounds ridiculous, not? ;-)

Oh, and eventually, we will be happy there are eight decimal points in Bitcoin, too..

Ente since you seem to be self-described as a terrible trader let me suggest a trading strategy that works if you are a long term bull (if you believe in the long term success of bitcoin).

1. Don't sell at a loss.  If you get caught in a bull trap, move those coins into your long term holdings.
2. If the price declines significantly (by 25% or 50% you choose), buy what you can and trade those until this $ is caught above again (see 1).
3. If the underlying security really is a very long term bull, the lower it goes the better you'll eventually do...
4. Profit! :-)

Note that this degenerates in a bear market (if you keep getting caught) into the well known long term dollar cost averaging strategy

A similar, more constrained strategy is when the price drops in half, recheck fundamentals (i.e. is the outlook still very long term bullish?) and double your investment.  This can be a very lucrative strategy because you end up with twice as much at the lower price as at the higher so if you get a full retracement to your original price you are way ahead.

If you pick the wrong security and it ultimately goes out of business... well, you lose! :-)

Thanks for the plan!
Yes, that's a kind of difficulty level I feel comfortable with :-P

It seems like I repeatedly have the problem to buy in too late/expensive. Being long-term bull, I have no problem sitting on my bitcoins and seeing the exchange rate drop.
My problems come when I think "hey, everything looks obvious that the rate will drop in the next days! I sell now to buy back in with a profit!" and then the price just keeps on climbing. Eventually I buy back in, at a loss (and then the price drops like a stone).

Currently, and normally, I have no fiat laying around (on Gox etc). I am 100% bitcoin, and sell only to play a round of "bad speculator". So when the price drops, like now, I can't even buy additional bitcoins..

Things I already learned the expensive way:
- first plan often is better than second plan
- decide, then stick to it
- wait long enough for it

Thank you people for your thoughts!
Maybe a new thread is due?
