one thing you can say for sure about these alternative bitcoins, is that they DO provide valuable data and a valuable learning experience for the future coins.
Yeah they may be jokes, get rich quick schemes, or just gambling apps, but they still provide some unique incite into the whole idea of crypto-currencies.

+1 It's like trying different flavors of ice cream. Bring on more flavors!

So how many blocks did you mine this go around?
17363  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: SolidCoins - May prove useful vs i0c/ixc on: August 21, 2011, 08:45:31 PM
I think Solidcoin made one great change that makes it viable for a secondary market for BTC.  While I don't currently anticipate a new coin coming out that becomes a viable currency for online stores, I do think SolidCoin's difficulty retarget method makes it a tool for non-USD BTC exchange.

The 10% limit on growth while maintaining the 75% fall in difficulty on a 240 block/12 hour window means it is immune to what happened to I0C/IXC, where the flood of miners hit the currency and vanished when BTC became higher valued.

Whether or not the speculation secondary market can survive can't be predicted, but at least SC had the right idea when it came to difficulty readjustment period for a competing/alternate cryptocurrency.
So you gonna point a giant pool at it for testing purposes or no?

for twitter post? Smiley

Yep twitter post is fine, just one per person though. The bounties page goes into more detail about such bounties as we don't want people spamming or doing stupid things.

Link to the post and you get the candy.

i think doublec is the only one puttin coins

Yeah. I'm too busy mining right now to be trading. He is probably just being the market maker so there is something to work with once people want to exchange their coins.

How are you doing there? Getting many stales ;-p

Not too shabby. Network seems to be smooth currently. No mega giant ass-hole pools sucking up the blocks like a crack-cocaine addict.

LOL  Cheesy
17368  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [OPEN LETTER] to Thomas Nasakioto on: August 21, 2011, 09:33:51 AM
1 Ixcoin block = 96 coins
1 I0coin block = 48 coins

Both have the same total coins cap; hence a ratio of 2:1.

That has nothing to do with the current supply though. Remember Thomas premined like 6000 blocks.

and I still have problems building the source.

make -f makefile.unix solidcoind
g++ -c -O2 -Wno-invalid-offsetof -Wformat -g -D__WXDEBUG__ -DNOPCH -DUSE_SSL -DUSE_UPNP=0 -o obj/nogui/util.o util.cpp
Assembler messages:
Fatal error: can't create obj/nogui/util.o: No such file or directory
make: *** [obj/nogui/util.o] Error 1

and if I copy the no gui folder from a devcoin build I just get:

g++ -O2 -Wno-invalid-offsetof -Wformat -g -D__WXDEBUG__ -DNOPCH -DUSE_SSL -DUSE_UPNP=0 -o solidcoind obj/nogui/util.o obj/nogui/script.o obj/nogui/db.o obj/nogui/net.o obj/nogui/irc.o obj/nogui/keystore.o obj/nogui/main.o obj/nogui/wallet.o obj/nogui/rpc.o obj/nogui/init.o obj/nogui/crypter.o cryptopp/obj/sha.o cryptopp/obj/cpu.o -Wl,-Bstatic -l boost_system -l boost_filesystem -l boost_program_options -l boost_thread -l db_cxx -l ssl -l crypto -l miniupnpc -Wl,-Bdynamic -l gthread-2.0 -l z -l dl -l pthread

Are you able to mine with windows? I've had zero issues with the client thus far.

hey smoothie: sorry I could have PM'd about this earlier but I was only on my android phone at the time so it was a bit fiddly. Hope you are still happy you found it fairly early on.

I tried to give heads up to a RL friend of mine with two 6990's that I told about i0coins launch. He was like "well i'm at a family function now I might check it out later" lol

Hey no worries. I like the concept of this block chain thus far. Time will tell...

how do u already have 1042 blocks found already on this pool?
I brought the pool up when it was made public soon after block 940. My pool is custom written, not using pushpoold. I can bring up a pool for a new currency by changing a couple of configuration parameters and it's on.

kudos bro!
17374  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] SolidCoin - new and improved block chain. Secure from pools on: August 21, 2011, 06:47:29 AM
Yes yes thats what i mean Smiley And i like it... So, doublec, what are you considering to do this time ? Will you make pool and exchange ?
There's a pool up at http://scpool.bitparking.com/pool. Note the extra fee over my other pools! I lost money on the i0 and ix coin pools due to the fact I pay out on orphans and there are a lot in the early stages. I'm upped the fee a bit in this earlier period to hopefully adjust. I'm considering an exchange.

17375  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [OPEN LETTER] to Thomas Nasakioto on: August 21, 2011, 01:35:51 AM
Just watch ixcoins die...

I think the bots have already established a rough 2:1 parity between I0coin and Ixcoin, as it should be.  So if Ixcoin goes to 0, then I0coins will be worth 2x that.

Moral of the story: Be careful what you wish for.

REALITY: I never wished for anything.

EDIT: How SHOULD it be 2:1? There are 3 times more ixcoins than i0coins in existence.

No, are you?

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=37333.msg458441#msg458441

What does your post have to do with the fact that if Satoshi owns any amount as significant as the Ixcoin owner does (which is very probable), he could equally crash the market on his whim? How is the situation any different?

Who cares if it’s 1.5 million or 500k BTC? Also, there’s at least one known individual who owns 375k BTC, so he could probably crash the market the same way the Ixcoin creator could: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=6825.msg101096#msg101096

I just think it’s hypocrisy for not wanting to use a currency because someone could crash it but continuing to use Bitcoin. If your actual problem is that he pre-mined them and not how they are actually distributed, then say so.

Just watch ixcoins die...

I think he has put quite some thoughts into Bitcoin. I think with some good activities, which show good will to the community, Ixcoin could get success.

What good activities do you speak of?

Bounties for ixcoins?

The idea of reserving a large amount of money to bribe people to provide services that benefit currency users is excellent.

Currency which has no proven value yeah lol

Your point is?

That is has no value. Are you blind?

What good activities do you speak of?

Bounties for ixcoins?

$500 advertising via the bitcoin conference?

Premining 580k coins and not being willing to disperse them into the community showing good faith?

Attacking i0coin via trolls on the bitcoin forum?

I'm curious to know how ixcoins will be successful when it purely is a copy-cat of bitcoin with nothing of value changed in the source code.
17380  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: IxCoin is a SCAM on: August 20, 2011, 07:29:53 AM
When asked about what ixcoin offers over bitcoin, Thomas Nasakioto said the following:

LINK: https://ixcoin.org/forum/index.php?topic=67.15

"Smoothie, I'm sorry to hear you take issue with the possibility that Fred and I have an incentive and might eventually make a return on Ixcoin. We are committed to making Ixcoin a success and have invested time and money towards this. For example, we just spent over $500 sponsoring the bitcoin conference to promote Ixcoin.

You might also eventually make a return yourself if you invested a handful of BTCs at Ixcoin's launch to purchase the same amount of Ixcoins we both have. The going rate was 15K IXC for 1 BTC back then. It's still very affordable right now. Or maybe you mined ten of thousands of Ixcoins during the initial mining rampup.

You feel that Ixcoin has no value? I've heard similar arguments from Bitcoin neophytes about Bitcoin. It's their perspective. I see value in Ixcoin and that's why I'm sticking with it. I see other people trading Ixcoins so apparently they see value in it too. If you don't, then please do not feel obliged to focus your energy on something you do not value."

I find his response to why ixcoin has value is rather empty.

I offered the following proposal based on his request of one user on how ixcoins could be more transparent:

Thiriel, I'm not quite sure how allocating the bounties to myself would make Ixcoin more transparent.

Either way, the bounties/source code/wiki/forum are all public. I'd be happy to hear any suggestions as to how we can make Ixcons more transparent.

Perhaps we could do a network restart where no ixcoins are pemined and some actual changes that mean something in the source code are modified to give them value. This would make things more transparent because then you are giving everyone equal opportunity to mine ixcoins as opposed to giving yourself a huge advantage prior to public release.

That would be fair and transparent. Until then many of us will likely stay away from ixcoins given that you could potentially crash the exchange(s) with your large amount of ixcoins in one sitting.

If this is not a money/power grab then you would be okay with restarting the network with zero premined coins and start the network off at a higher difficulty giving ixcoins more rarity because of how difficult they will be to mine them. Say the start difficulty was 10,000 instead of 1.

You would gain more interest in your project if everything I listed above was executed and the network was restarted.

But then again, your motives for having this network will show based on how you do or do not respond to this posting. Everyone else is watching too.
