Well, I hear you, M.Z. (re sometimes firmware updates maybe being necessary), but I would think that some companies could design and make a cheap & reliable hardware wallet that would never require any updates.

OK, I do not program, but would it not be possible to design a device and write bulletproof software for a simple device?

Simple, reliable, tough & cheap: is that too much to ask?  Smiley

FWIW, my take on Greece is that it really does not matter in the end which route they take.  All roads lead to some version of a default.  What cannot be paid, will not be paid back.

Greece cannot pay its debts (for various reasons, and various parties are at fault).

Zero Hedge has a new article this evening, saying that for Europe and the USA, it does not matter at all if Greece pays anything or not (they won't pay anything).  The whole "contagion meme" is wrong.  Europe and the USA will fall because of our own high debts.  I have not had a chance to think this idea over for long, but it appears to have at least merit, it is worth a read:

My guess is that all privacy is gone anyway.  And probably has been for years.

When .gov says "Jump!", almost all of the companies say "How high?".  If they are not already all in cahoots (Google) with NSA, IRS, FBI, etc., etc.

I can only think of one (partial) solution: Get quiet ("Go Galt").

Run quiet, run deep.  Be faster and more nimble than the other poor S.O.B.'s...
2944  Economy / Speculation / Re: What do you expect from the halving in 2016? on: June 27, 2015, 02:10:59 AM

I have a bag containing 99 marbles. There are three colors of marbles in the bag: red, green, and blue. If I pick one at random, what is the probability of it not being red? The correct answer is not 2/3. I'll let you figure out why not.

Ah, that probability would vary between some 6% and 93%!  Depending on how many marbles of each color are in the bag.  Need to have an idea of the distribution of each color in the population, also assuming each marble the same size, texture, physical placement of marbles within the bag, etc.
2945  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: First Bitcoin ATM (BTM) comes to Greece amidst the recession! on: June 27, 2015, 01:56:25 AM
...

I am late to this thread, but will make a couple of observations:

1)  It looks like this BTC ATM requires no ID to use.  The only machine I ever used (in NYC) did not either, I put in almost all the cash I had in my wallet ($400) for BTC.  Assuming any such buyer has a safe wallet, then they are good to go...  Good to go to Italy or anywhere else to get their money out of Greece!

2)  Anyone looking to get some of their money out of Greece should consider (and quickly!) buying BTC as heavily as they can.  YES, BTC price is quite variable, but almost any amount of price volatility is more than compensated by the relative safety of BTC (and the ability to get it back in Italy or wherever).  I completely agree with above comment on why there are so many Greeks with so much money left in their banks, WTF?!

*   *   *

It would be of interest to this thread if we can get pictures of the lines of people (or even the lack thereof) in the coming days.  Zero Hedge has a big article on long lines forming at "regular ATMs", getting their electrons in the bank turned into paper euros while they still can...
2946  Economy / Economics / Re: if buying 100 BTC doesn't get the price to go up then what will on: June 27, 2015, 01:46:42 AM

Well my experience has been different...   Smiley

Every time I buy BTC, the price then goes down afterwards.  Same as when I buy gold or used to buy stocks.

They front-run me!  If I make ANY kind of trade, ask me, and take the other side of the bet...

I went to take a look at their website: digitalbitbox.com, looks like an interesting product!

I like the use of the chip (like Ledger I suppose), I also like the fact that they say it will be simple and that there will be no firmware updates.  Both my Ledger Nano and Trezor are asking me to update firmware...

I look forward to finding out how much it will cost and become available.

i would estimate that it will cost 20-40 Euro/Dollar. no firmware updates would be cool indeed.

That price range is very reasonable, I hope that it is priced so.

As a general rule, simplicity is something I admire and like in such products.  Firmware updates are not only a hassle (mild, we hope), but introduce risks, I believe some people had problems with a Trezor firmware update (I did not do the update).  "A BTC wallet for the rest of us!"
2948  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Anyone tried this LocalBitcoins alternative ? on: June 27, 2015, 01:25:36 AM
...

For the first time, localbitcoins failed me.  I made an appointment to meet someone new for me to buy BTC, but we could not agree on price.  He wanted 12% over "spot", too much!  I offered 8% (more than I ever had paid before, typically 5% - 6%), he would not agree.

Lesson learned: I should have negotiated this beforehand, grr...

Still, now I know, document everything before.

I'm looking forward to the movie, TPTB.

Above comment on 3-D printing was of interest.  I presume that is fairly easy to figure out...   Smiley

Partial solutions are better than no solution.

It's beginning to look like ONLY a Knowledge Age will free us.  But, a Knowledge Age does not by any means seem inevitable, even after growing pains.

I think the time will arrive soon to go dark.  Go dark (or "Go Galt") in America?  Yes, I am afraid so, at least for a while.  When you cannot even critique a judge's decision on something, that is violation of our First Amendment.

Violating our Constitution is something that has been seen here rather a lot just in the past few days:

-- SCOTUS on Obamacare

-- SCOTUS on gay marriage (note: it's wording I object to, let gays have civil unions and the .gov bennies, but don't make conservative churches be forced to marry those outside of their own moral rules, same with bakeries, etc.).

-- Obamatrade deals (why so secret guys?)

-- And now this (thx, trollercoaster).

2951  Economy / Economics / BLYTHE MASTERS: Wall Street moving in on BTC on: June 26, 2015, 03:09:22 AM

Blythe Masters, she of fame when at JP Morgan for inventing Credit Default Swaps (a type of derivative) AND speculating in "paper silver", is now hard at work taking over BTC companies.

Her firm has recently taken over two small BTC firms: HyperLedger (similar to factom) and Bits of Proof.

2952  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Kim Dotcom Says ‘Greece Will Crash Market; Buy Bitcoin and Gold’ on: June 26, 2015, 03:02:52 AM
...

Greeks should indeed buy both BTC and gold.  Both are investments that are only somewhat correlated with each other, but both will help prevent wealth from being confiscated in a Greek bail-in.

I would say the same for cautious savers in the USA.  We may be only 3 years (who knows) behind Greece with our own financial problems.

Pro tip:

If Greece has a bad ending, watch Spain & Italy.  If either goes off the cliff too (or even more so: if both do), then France goes...  France goes, Germany goes...  If Germany goes, and we have 48 hours (max) before the financial tsunami washes upon our shores.

Mmm, yes, "public servants" are notorious worldwide for being lazy, going on strike, long vacations, easy work.

"Champagne Socialists", very good.  Smiley

But, any of them with any power will bitterly cling to it, and tax us / boss us around (Armstrong).

47% of Americans will vote for Hillary, no matter what scandal, etc.  47% is her starting point.  Think about that.  She will not be a friend of Bitcoin...

That PITA threat looks like more of a threat to online wallets more than with cold storage hardware devices like Trezor and Ledger Nano.

If you keep your BTC holdings to a small amount in your hot wallet, then that seems to all that would be at risk.

[Correct me if I am wrong]

Just saw that myself earlier today, TPTB.  Yet MOAR Economic Totalitarianism...

Each new week confirms what Armstrong and you have been saying.  There will be no place to hide, at least conventional places.  No (or few, and any such would have other issues/problems) other places will offer protection from the Hungry Collective...

Kind-of related is today's SCOTUS decision re Obamacare.  Last year BC-BS raised our medical insurance rates 16%.  I am expecting 25% next time, and it will be against the law to not have insurance.

It was a tax before it was a tax.  Or is it the other way around?  Either way, it means more of the US Middle Class will be getting screwed again.

2956  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Veldt Gold - Buy and Sell Gold, Silver, Platinum, and Palladium for Bitcoin! on: June 25, 2015, 06:31:54 PM

Another order from Veldt Gold has arrived OK.  All good.  I think this was my third order, all three have gone well.

This time I paid by check, which meant a longer delivery time than before (Veldt waits for the check to go through).  But after the check did go through, delivery only took two days, nice shipping!

To save several days, I would definitely recommend paying by Bitcoin.

bitcoinrocks

My experience with mixers is somewhat limited, nor do I have any experience with exchanges or trading BTC for AltCoins.

But, I can say that I have had excellent results with bitmixer.io.  That is why I chose them for my signature ad.

SharedCoin's service sometimes is down, I have had that experience as well.  I would have pretty good confidence in both, but if I had to choose one only, I would choose bitmixer.

Follow their instructions completely!  <====

2958  Economy / Economics / Re: Rothschild's gigantic banking family prepares for the inevitable on: June 25, 2015, 04:03:41 AM

Who knows what "Financial Giants" like the Rothschilds will do in their investments?  Certainly I do not.

The Rothschilds are likely the richest family in the world, with many holdings in banks.  They also own castles and vineyards, and likely LOTS OF GOLD.

I am not sure if they see BTC as inevitable or not.  But, if/when they do, you can be sure that they will stake a claim in the Bitcoin World...

A long but interesting article on the Rothschilds can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rothschild_family

In my case, I did indeed buy using my Bitcoin even though I could get what I wanted for slightly cheaper using cash.  I started as a complete beginner a little over year ago (approx.), and it took "learn by doing" for me to understand and correctly use BTC.

I have spent about 35% - 40% of my Bitcoin that I bought.  I will HODL most of the rest (investment), and hope that I can get some more by rickety localbitcoins.
2960  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How secure https://bitmixer.io is? on: June 23, 2015, 09:17:23 PM
...

I have mixed BTC with bitmixer.io many times.  It seems to separate origin of BTC (address) from the destination address very well.  bitmixer.io offers various options (can add more destination addresses and time delays) to further hide your trail.

The algorithm seems to be very different than the other popular mixing service: SharedCoin, via blockchain.info.

It is important to follow bitmixer's instructions very carefully!   <====

*   *   *

I chose bitmixer's signature campaign because it is the only service (here at bitcointalk) that I have used.  Making a small amount of dollars MOAR with another signature campaign is not my style, as I do not gamble nor use exchanges.
