2281  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: OVERVIEW: BITCOIN HARDWARE WALLETS █████████████████ Secure your Coins on: December 27, 2015, 06:30:35 PM
Hardware Wallet Sales Strongly Correlated with Bitcoin Price

By eyeballing your graph (making estimates of the numbers), litecoinguy, I calculated (on MS Excel) a correlation coefficient of about 0.84, which is indeed a very strong correlation.

You rarely see correlation coefficients of over 0.65 or so (depending...) in the social sciences, often a C.C. of 0.30 is often considered "significant".  0.84 is indeed VERY significant.

More data over a longer period of time would be EXCELLENT to see, I hope that you re-visit Ledger's sales by month, perhaps in the past as well.

Very interesting!  Thanks!
2282  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Do People HERE at bitcointalk BTFDs? on: December 27, 2015, 06:15:11 PM
...

I try to "Buy The F******Dip", but it is hard in my city as there are not very many good BTC buying opportunties.  We have a BTC ATM ("BTM"), but it charges 9% over spot and requires ID.  localbitcoins does not work too well here, sigh...

Yet, when BTC goes down, it does give me incentive to buy.  Like now.  If the place with the BTM is open tomorrow, I'll drive over...

What say you?
2283  Economy / Economics / Re: The Switzerland of Bitcoin on: December 27, 2015, 06:05:37 PM
...

It's too bad that we could only vote for one country, I chose Argentina because of the growth seen there and the fact that BTC is popular for good reason there.

OK, HarryKPeters says that Brazil has lots of places that accept BTC.  That is encouraging.  Brazil has many problems, and BTC can help some locals better cope.  Brazil is a big country, "it matters", so if BTC gets popular there, that might be the critical mass the world needs to get the Bitcoin Express rolling...  Smiley

I would like to see more places in the USA accept Bitcoin too...

Peru (my beat when not in the USA) is not on the list.  But, there is VERY LITTLE BTC activity there.  Probably because they allow the US$ and their Sol to be freely traded, no currency restrictions.

*   *   *

As for safety and freedom to transact BTC, I would probably choose Switzerland, Dubai/UAEmirates or Singapore.

Biggest market over the next few years?  USA.

Biggest potential?  China or even India.
2284  Economy / Economics / Re: This is how 0.037 Bitcoins looks like in Venezuela on: December 27, 2015, 05:58:57 PM
This is why Venezuela will be the first country to adopt a virtual currency.

 0.037 Bitcoins o almost 12 Us$

It loos like a lot of money, but is the equivalent to half of the monthly minimum wage

I had no clue Venezuela was doing that bad. They could actually earn a months salary with a signature campaign  Cheesy

You could actually be rich with a signature campaign but you can also get shot if you go there so i'd rather stay in my country where the value is lower than get shot in a country where life quality is bad

I would speculate that anyone from the USA or Europe who otherwise goes to Venezuela for other reasons could bring along some BTC with them (hardware or online wallet) and make some easy BOLIVARES in trade (so enjoy your steaks!), similar to what I hear people do when they visit Argentina.

More BTC in Venezuela is a good thing.  Good for someone bringing BTC there, and good for the local buyers who have some safety for their wealth.

*   *   *

I am not in a good position to comment, but I would *guess* that setting up a mining operation there would NOT be a good idea.  Crime and all (as pointed out above).  Venezuela even before Chavez/Maduro was always a higher-crime place than was widely thought.
2285  Economy / Speculation / Re: Oops Price is 425$ Now... on: December 27, 2015, 05:51:45 PM
...

I usually buy when I have the *opportunity*.  My life is busy, and I do not like to buy from exchanges nor give out my credit card info (I used to).

But, this latest price drop to +/- $420 gives me some incentive to go to my city's BTM, so with luck tomorrow I will have a little bit more.
2286  Economy / Economics / Re: Holdings of gold vs Holdings of btc on: December 24, 2015, 05:01:11 AM
...

Gold and Bitcoin are in "different spaces".  They really ought not be compared.  They are complementary!

Wise investors usually choose to diversify.  Gold and BTC move relatively independently of each other, and so both are perfect diversifications if you do not fully trust the financial system.

How much of each to own is a personal decision.  I own more gold than BTC.

Happy holidays to everyone.

I am staying out the discussions. You all feel free.

I've been working on my health doing a lot of exercise and getting off the computer. Recharging my eyes and head for another coding push to launch. Been enjoying the time to talk to many people about my marketing plan and everyone seems to enthusiastic. Eager to see how the experiment works out.

Looking forward to it, happy holidays TPTB.

troller & TPTB

Merry Christmas to both of you and to all of yours.

Stay healthy!  Stay happy
2288  Economy / Economics / Re: Economic Totalitarianism on: December 24, 2015, 01:19:37 AM

It is a horrendous pursuit that only serves to highlight the neo fascism of Team America. They speak in euphemism and confound us with doublespeak and bullshit but the game being played here is simple; extradite Dotcom at the behest of the MPAA /USG and let him serve as a warning to any David wishing to take on the corporate interests of Goliath. If locking him away for 55 years can't be achieved, play the long game and bankrupt him. Lets face it, Huxley and Orwell have been bred like a Labradoodle - we live on a Brave New World surface with a 1984 underbelly.

Fascism seems to be almost everywhere now.  All major governments are clamping down on anything they wish.  Especially on things that affect their power.

Peru is going the same way.

No escape?

Economic Totalitarianism, coming to all countries near you soon.
2289  Economy / Economics / Re: CNN: Money is flying out of China on: December 17, 2015, 04:14:38 AM
...

Another factor maybe worth thinking about as well re China and the US$ would be that if rates paid by US banks goes up (which probably will happen at some point), then more Chinese (and other) money will come here seeking a better return than at home.  So far, the US banks have raised their loan rates, but not rates paid to savers.

Typically, the banks are slow to raise rates paid, but very quick to raise rates on loans.  You see something similar happen when crude oil goes down, gasoline prices take a while to go down.  But, they react much more quickly to raise prices when crude goes up.

So, if rates look like they will continue to go up (and there is a "sort of consensus" that the FED will raise two - four times next year), then I would expect MOAR Chinese money to flow here.

Yes, I live near Miami, so I'll be going.

Topics of interest to me (I am not a pro of any sort in BTC, just a HODL-er and buyer-seller):

-- Ledger products (Ledger is a sponsor, they make hardware wallets, I met Eric L. at last year's conference)

-- New products / services

-- Investment opportunities ??

-- Sit through a seminar or two, maybe a speech or two...

-- Network around, ask questions (esp. re privacy, so questions about TOR, etc.), yeah I'll pay for lunch if they'll talk...  Smiley
2291  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Halving Party 2016 on: December 17, 2015, 02:39:31 AM
I am slowly building my bitcoin stash but for me the halving will hopefully be a stepping stone which might be talked about and make more people aware of the blockchain technology as well as the best cryptocurrency which is bitcoin.

Your looking to continue holding BTC after a major price increase?

I will HODL all of my BTC is the price move is gradually up, or if there is not much movement at all prior to +/- July 20.

I will HODL most of my BTC if the price rises sharply.  If it spikes to, say, $2000, I will buy some gold with BTC.

My *guess* is that if BTC is able to break through its ATH price in the $1200s by then, then maybe many others will get into it.  The more players in this game, the better...

markj113

That is an excellent chart, thanks for tracking it down for us.

I would expect that the value of the world's gold will continue to FAR exceed the total BTC market cap for many years.  Gold will be very scarce (and so expensive) for many years.

And we cannot predict the future of Bitcoin.  It looks good now, but in 50 years maybe something better will come along?  50 years, nowadays, is a long time...

https://youtu.be/lHcTKWiZ8sI    must watch freaky shit out of China

That is very creepy and very bad, yet I do not easily see how one could "opt out", as it will become, IIUC, by 2020.

How subtle the control.  Bet we see *something* like that at some point here in the West, although I hope not.  It will be interesting to see if the Chinese people go along with it (probably).

Thanks for posting that trollerc!

Hey!  The Fed could always go to "NIRP" (negative interest rates) should the economy or markets crater...
2295  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: OVERVIEW: BITCOIN HARDWARE WALLETS █████████████████ Secure your Coins on: December 16, 2015, 08:40:31 PM
added BitLox.

Thanks!

I'm the developer of the BitLox, so if anybody has questions, shoot away!

The BitLox look like interesting products.  But, there is a lot of competition, and the prices are high.

Maybe a VIDEO on how the device works would be nice at your website, also a FAQ.

Other than the titanium (vs. aluminum), is there any difference between the "Advanced" and the "Ultimate"?

I look forward to any reviews...
2296  Economy / Economics / Fed Funds rate raised 0.25%, how will BTC price react? on: December 16, 2015, 08:03:29 PM
...

So far, BTC price not moving.

Silver up nearly 4%.

Platinum up about 2.4%.

WTIC oil down to approx. $35.78 (that's very low).

Dow and S&P500 faltered, but now up over 1% (3:02 PM US ET).

Most other commodities that I have looked at are not moving much, at least yet.

I am curious to read opinions on how BTC prices may react, this is the first time in "modern BTC history" that Fed Funds rates have been raised.
2297  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockchain.info -> Shared Coin -> All my BTC's gone on: December 16, 2015, 05:38:51 AM
Hi.

I was cleaning up my stored adresses in blockchain.info and finally tried to mix them using the blockchain inlcuded service "shared coin". The problem is, all of my ~24 BTC's show up as confirmed to one (!) random adress i can't remember of having sent some coins manually to, and no coins have showed up till now.

Interestingly i've found an older thread of someone having a pretty similar problem:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1o7vbi/blockchaininfo_stole_5_btc_from_me_over_a_month/

I'm sad, angry and confused, that just doesn't make sense. I'm using 2FA before every transaction, and i cerntainly didn't paste "any random adress" in. Also, the shared coin option was really bugged, it showed several errors and to be honest i can't even remember that it finally worked.

The "recovery" function that can be found n the shared coin tab also doesn't work, whatever it is supposed to do..

I already contacted the BC staff, waiting for reply now.

Once, when I used the SharedCoin service, and my BTC never showed up either.  I tried using (and I am not sure if The "recovery" function you refer to is the same thing) the "Something go wrong?" there, and DID recover my BTC from "Intermediate Addresses".

Of course, you may be able to get help from their support.

I had trouble with a blockchain wallet using 2FA as well.  Had to go to their support...

Best not to keep LARGE balances at blockchain.info.  I keep only a small balance there, enough for a decent lunch if ever stranded somewhere.  Too many risks of various problems for large amounts.

Most of the time their SharedCoin service has worked OK for me (sometimes long confirmation times).  But, I prefer bitmixer.io, I use their service, it works well (carefully follow instructions), that is why I asked to be in their Signature Campaign.
2298  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin founder chooses gold, you have been had on: December 15, 2015, 04:55:17 PM
...

The whole Wright case in Australia is very strange, yet complex.

I would like to look at one component here: Wright's strange way he wanted to buy gold.  Rather than buy, say, from The Perth Mint (Australia after all) or even a Swiss gold refinery, he starts hanging out with a presumably sketchy guy.

WTF is that?  Were I looking to offload a bunch of BTC for gold (and yes, if I had a huge holding of BTC I would want the diversification), I would look to buy real gold from a real supplier.

BTC is great, really!  But, buying and holding some gold is just a smart thing to do with a HOARD of BTC.
2299  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What wallets do you use and why? on: December 15, 2015, 04:48:14 PM
...

-- I use my blockchain.info wallet for receiving BTC, sometimes mixing with their SharedCoin service, and I keep about $20 worth of BTC there, just in case I need to buy a meal somewhere where BTC is accepted...

-- I have a Ledger Nano and a Trezor, I keep the bulk of my BTC there in cold storage.  Both highly recommended!

-- And a blockchain.info app wallet in my iPhone (small amounts, say $20).
2300  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Early blocks won, a casual stroll through history... on: December 15, 2015, 05:19:28 AM
...

I had read enough about some of the early days of Bitcoin, I decided that I wanted to stroll through history to some early blocks via blockchain.info.  Nothing scientific, but I was curious to see what happened in some of those early blocks vs. what we have seen since I started learning about and using BTC.

No real methodology, random exploration, and not in depth.  I was just curious!

I noted at Blocks 1 and 2 that there were NO other trx other than the winner(s) (Satoshi?).  I then looked at Blocks 60, 160, 960 and some others, no other trx either.

It wasn't until about Block 95,000 that I saw some other trx, that block listed ONE other transaction.  Date of that block was in Dec 2010.

Block 106,000 lists four trx.

All blocks examined generated 50 BTC each.

*   *   *

Nothing really important uncovered, just thought I would share.

I would be curious to note when the mixers came in as well as other services.

Comments re early BTC history are most welcome!  Smiley
