I think the client limits its connections to a few tens of peers. Given that these are random peers, their upload speeds are going to be horrible. (This is speculation though, I may be wrong about how this works.)

Perhaps the idea of an "official" group is not wise.  Instead, the core dev team could create an organization, with special logo and name. This organization would be the de facto official group, but only so long as it held up its reputation. At all times, other groups can form and compete for "de facto officialness."

In essence then, this would just be a Non-profit, spontaneously organized by individuals. If multiple such organizations sprout up, then each community member can support whomever they wish.

Think of it like a market for competing representatives. No group official by law, but any group official by market sentiment. We would see one group come to dominate the sentiment, but Bitcoin would not be irrevocably tied to it.

No group should be granted an explicit monopoly... but an implicit market-derived monopoly would not bother me.

I think the metric relies on the fact that people rarely move coins from one place to another unless they are spending them, or plan to spend them soon, or just received them from somebody else. As long as this is the case, then the metric is valid.

If I randomly transfer bitcoins from one address to another, then it throws off the days-destroyed metric, since those were not spent but the metric still measures them as spent coins.

Earlier today I posted a thread on the interesting October 10th article in the New Yorker positing that Satoshi was Michael Clear, a grad student at Trinity. After a review of some of the forum posts and paper by "Satoshi" I do not think it could be him. Even though occasional British spellings are used, the overall language is very Americanized. Also, the writer is much older than 23. He refers to the USENET, for example. Also, the writer's fluent knowledge of cryptocurrency issues is way too thorough for a youngster, even a brilliant one.

Like others I analyzed the language of the Satoshi posts and quickly noticed word collisions with posts of another contributor, Robert A. Hettinga. For example,

.......synchronisation (spelled with an 's')
.......etched
.......shenanigans

The chances of Satoshi being a single person are slim. I am skeptical of Gavin's explanation for the name Clearcoin.

Blocks can't be larger than 1MB, so an attacker can't bloat the chain too much.

I doubt that any exchange who is big enough to pay their expenses will be able to operate under the kind of anonymity that would be desirable to a lot of us.

My projection is that when anonymity is required, fiat<->btc will be occurring on a face-to-face basis and at a significant discount over the exchange rates.  And I doubt that it will be long before that is considered to be a criminal activity if it is not already.
