I can't vote, but I would do XVG so we don't lose the V. I feel if the V for Verge isn't there then it would be confusing and XER doesn't show VERGE. My opinion!
gold is XAU  in the world market not XGL or XGD think has to do with pronunciation just like XER (in cryptos you've got a xau that has nothing to do with markets so it was a bad choice to use a currency code that is already in real usage) when you can pronounce something you can make a statement |

ER, RG, VR, or VG  ah, its because gold was called aurum previously.. so technically they are going by the name of gold when they made the symbol in both the periodic table and ticker |

Not only does it relate better to the word verge, but VG is the code for the British Virgin Islands
