I thought they would allow Russian athletes to take part as independents, and while it would yet be a controversial decision but at least Russian player’s would have been able to participate. Also Djokovic should not have have commented on this as he’s already facing scrutiny due to his vaccination stand, and I wonder if he’ll face any punishment for his comments.

I was a little bit surprised by the move of Wimbledom as they are the first organisator that is not allowing Russian athletes to compete. In all the other sports (gymnastics,...) all Russian athletes can participate but under a neutral flag. Personally, I find it a bridge too far to ban the players that come from Russia...

I agree, this is sports and should not be involving politics. And it's unfair for those Russian athletes as obviously, they have nothing to do wit the war and yet they are the one who suffers from it.

On Barcelona Open, good match for me will be

FAA vs Tiafoe - I will go with FAA here, -2.5.
Alcaraz vs Munar, Alcaraz -4.5.

What is worse is that should not be their decision to make. ATP is the covering organisation and they are the entity that gives out bans and similar stuff to players. ATP suspended Russia from Davis cup and Fed cup but allowed their players to compete. Can you imagine Quatar banning some team from world cup without FIFA doing it? This is just posturing to see how much tournament owners can get away with.

Yep, agreed. As far as I know, there are no individual bans for Russians to work in England. So, if a ball boy can be Russian and a bus driver can be Russian, I really don't understand why a tennis player can't be Russian as well.

After all - as you said - ATP is the governing body. Wimbledon should be following ATP's rules and I hope they won't get away with this.

The Wimbledon tournament is not organized by the ATP but by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet club, or abbreviated All England Club and they are a private members' club.
This means that the ATP has no influence on Wimbledon organizers and can't prevent them from making their own decisions regarding the tennis tournament.
I think it is obvious that the All England Club is under a lot of pressure from the British government and that I can't make a different decision.
I'm sorry for Medvedev and other Russian and Belarusian tennis players, but this is a political decision and I do not believe it will change.

Yeah, I know - that's why I used 'should' instead of 'must'.
What I meant to say is that if we have a governing organization (which we do, both ATP and WTA are governing tennis organizations), the tournaments should follow some guidelines.

ATP and WTA recommended that the players participate under neutral flags and I really don't see what Wimbledon plans to accomplish with banning individuals from participating in the tournament.

It is discriminatory and unnecessary, both for sport and in general.

I don't think that is true. Granted grand slam tournaments don't fall under ATP but they fall under ITF. ITF has the power to take the tournament from All england club and place it in some other country if they choose so. ATP has the power to not acknowledge points from grand slam if they don't follow general rules. That will not happen unfortunately, since grand slams are very important and they get larger then life status but we could see a pissing contest between all the parties.

I'd agree that it won't stop here. The ATP agreement with Wimbledon is that player entry is based solely on ranking. I would imagine that this is stipulated explicitly in a formal, legal contract. Which would make Wimbledon in violation of contract... so I could certainly see this going to court (bad pun intended). And this is quite apart from the fact that discrimination based on nationality is illegal anyway.

I do think the eventual outcome is Wimbledon backing down and letting them play, whilst achieving their PR aim of doing everything they could to stop Russians playing.

Thats 21 wins in a row for Swiatek, you would have to bet with handicap on her really.

Found this on Instagram this morning, thats remarkable!

We watched the match last night, Tsitsipas v Alcaraz, what a great Tennis spectacle
it was, Alcaraz used his "drop shot" skill to his advantage, for me it was the most notable
play of the match.

Tsitsipas lost the cool, tried to hit Alcaraz with the ball after losing the first set, went
off court twice and got 2 time penalties, insulted the chair umpire ...and lost the match.
Great watch!

^Funny how life sometimes writes such incredible stories. Really great coincidence that Alacaraz managed to get into top 10 on the same day and on the same tournament as Rafael Nadal.

Did not watch him against Tsitsipas but it seems like it was interesting match. He should have an easy time against De Minaur today since I don't think Aussie has the weapons to make it though on clay.

Really great coincidence that Alacaraz managed to get into top 10 on the same day and on the same tournament as Rafael Nadal.

He's clearly destined for the very top, and the comparisons with Nadal will no doubt continue for his whole career.
He may be young, but if he's planning on matching Nadal's ludicrous record of 13 French Open wins, then Alcaraz is running out of time already... he needs to win it this year, or he's in trouble! Grin

Seriously though, fantastic player. We've had so many "next big thing" players coming through over the years, but no-one who ever really looked like they could be the next Nadal/Federer/Djokovic... but Alcaraz really does look like the real thing.

grand slam tournaments don't fall under ATP but they fall under ITF.

I guess this decision of the All England club came about due to the great political pressure of the British government.
Therefore, I do not think that this situation will be resolved quickly and easily.
I think it is possible that we will look at the same scenario again as in Australia when Djokovic tried to challenge in court the decision of the Australian government to ban him from entering the country and participating in the tournament.
Lately, too much has been decided about tennis in the courts, instead in a playing field, what is not good for tennis and tennis fans.

he will be no.1 in the future, seems that he is concentrated on tennis, not like all those other contenders out of top3 that play hot/cold, he seems to be able to connect wins in a row
of course, it all can turnaround fast, as it was for Medvedev and Nadal this season, both seemed that will take no.1 at some point this year, and do not play at the moment

will be interesting final in Belgrade between Rublev and Djokovic

Emma Raducanu has won back to back matches for the first time in a while, in her first proper tournament on clay, and has now reached the quarter final stage, where she will play... Swiatek!

I'm English so of course want Raducanu to win, but it seems hugely improbable, this one looks like it could easily end up with Swiatek winning 6-0 6-0.

If you really think she could win 6-0 and 6-0, it might be worth looking up a bet there. I think you'll be pretty rich if that actually happens. 6-0, 6-0 are results that you rarely see. or you must have placed the number 1 against a qualification for example. But even then, a game is usually won. Or there must be an injury.
Nobody losses 6:0 6:0 while injured. Even if you have minor injury you will forfeit rather than stand on turf embarrassing yourself and risking even more serious injury.

Raducanu has strong shots and I feel like she will get few games for sure but probably not gonna cover handicap. This is first season she even plays on clay so Swiatek is enormous favorite. Perfect match to skip, better opportunities elsewhere.

Yes, I will be skipping it. Swiatek is the overwhelming favourite, but I think the betting odds are not overwhelming enough in her favour... it is pretty pointless betting on Swiatek. I do think 6-0 6-0 is a genuine possibility, but whilst it could happen, I agree it's not the most likely result, so won't be betting on it.

I watched most of this match, and was quite surprised at how it played out. The first set, Swiatek was quite dominant on serve, but the second set was very finely-balanced, and the two players looked like equals. Swiatek took 3/4 break points in the match, Raducanu only 1/5... but Raducanu had her chances in that second set, and it could quite easily have gone to three. That's one of the hardest matches Swiatek has had for a while.

Swiatek is dominating in women tennis and didnt see a huge winning streak there in a long time honestly, finally someone showing good tennis for some time.

Also Tsitsipas was probobly tired in this match a little because he won a tournament last week. Also Alcaraz is playing some really good tennis and he is already in top 10 that is some huge news honestly.

It seems Djokovic has recovered mentally already. I thought that he will be upset after losing the first set against, Khachanov, but the usual, he seems to be really losing the first set and then storm back to win the last 2.

Rublev though has an easy game against Fognini. I have a parlay with him and Alcaraz at handicap but the Alcaraz vs De Minaur has been suspended.

^ When I check the scores, I'm not surprised by it, as you have said, Djokovic seems to be doing this intentionally to give his opponents some confident and they destroys them in the next two sets.

So it's another rain delayed match, at least it is on the first set and the score for Alcaraz vs De Minaur is 2-2, same with Schwartzman vs Pablo Carreno-Busta. Rooting for Alcaraz to go to the finals against Carreno-Busta.

Although Alcaraz won, he didn't cover the handicap so my parlay got destroyed.

Rublev defeating Djokovic in Belgrade, wow, I thought that Djokovic will win this game in 2 sets.  But Rublev plays solid and it so happen that Djokovic win the tie break in the 2nd set. But then Rublev destroys him 6-0 in the final set.

Djoković gave a really strange interview after the match. He is sort off ill, he has some disease that came back and sap his strength. It is not covid but he does not want to talk about it. Seems like he had problems with that disease at the begging of the career and then nothing until now.

What do you mean Alcaraz did not cover the handicap? He won 6:3 6:2 in the final, meaning +6.5 got covered. i don't think anybody even offered something over 4.5.
