The womens final at Lyon is today between Zhang ^China and Yastremska ^Ukraine

Yastremska beat the second seed Cirstea yesterday in a 3 set battle, I just caught
half of the last set. Yastremska has really done well to get to the final to play Zhang
who is seeded 8 and who beat Garcia yesterday in 2 sets 2-6, 5-7.

I'm going to go with Yastremska to win this, she's been riding a huge wave in this tournament after fleeing Ukraine, and I think everyone in the crowd will want her to win the title. She may be a wild-card, but she's got the ability. And I think after the US Open last season, no-one is surprised to see a wild-card or qualifier burst through from nowhere.

Ah it was not to be, after 3 sets Zhang was able to win. It was a great tournament
for the Ukranian and she did indeed have the crowd on her side. I didnt bet on this
match, I couldnt call it.


Monterrey FINAL

Osorio v Fernandez, fifth seed v the second seed, this could be a really good
match, I would love to see this but its on too late here.

I have 2 bets on, one on each player!
I have Fernandez to win @ 1.34 and +4.5 handicap on Osorio.

Ah it was not to be, after 3 sets Zhang was able to win. It was a great tournament
for the Ukranian and she did indeed have the crowd on her side. I didnt bet on this
match, I couldnt call it.

Yeah, such a shame, I really wanted her to win, and thought she could get through that final match. It was close, particularly after Yastremka took the first set... but ultimately a step too far.
Unbelievable when you think about the context, that she was even able to play tennis this week. Quite incredible, really. And she is donating her tournament prize money to help Ukraine.

Yes incredible given the context of running from Ukraine to compete knowing that
her country was being attacked and especially being able to continue throughout
the week at such a level, she was driven!


I am happy with my two bets yesterday on the Monterrey final, Raducanu won
but with 2 tie breaks which helped my +4.5 handicap on Osorio. They were small bets,
0.02mBTC ON Fernandez and 0.04 on Osorio so both were winners.

I have to admit that I really like Zverev as a tennis player, but he will obviously have to learn how to control his emotions or he could be kicked out of tennis competitions, which would be a great tragedy for world tennis.

They both have a lot of talent but obviously they lack something to fully realize their huge tennis potential.

^^ Nick is a different case though, he seems to have a problem inside, that's why you can see his antic in the court.

For Zverev, yes, he is a great player and for sure everyone likes the guy. But with his outburst, just shows another side of himself. So I do agree that he will have to learn his lessons and he shouldn't be that emotional in a game.

I think he got away lightly with what essentially was a monetary fine and probation.
It doesnt act as much as a deterrent for future violations, I wouldnt like to see any other

I believe Djokovic is much more concerned with points and winning grand slams than his sponsors at the moment. As you say, he has more money than he can spend but few more GS titles would go very well with his GOAT candidacy.

Serbia is one off the countries that have strong political ties with Russia and one of the very few countries that did not give support to Ukraine or condemned Russia war efforts. I suspect this reason is the trigger because of the timing and possible further bad promotion.

actually, Serbia condemned Russia war effort in the end, but did not put sanctions on them (but yeah, it is a black hole, if you look on Europe map)
however, it could be a fact that brings bad publicity, although Djokovic sent message that he supports Ukraine

I believe Djokovic is much more concerned with points and winning grand slams than his sponsors at the moment. As you say, he has more money than he can spend but few more GS titles would go very well with his GOAT candidacy.

Djokovic has so much money that he could also stop playing tennis altogether. He certainly no longer plays tennis for the money, that is no longer a motivation. He is simply in a position not to participate in major tournaments if the corona conditions do not suit him. When Corona is completely gone, it will only get more serious again. Many of his colleagues will also think strangely about Djokovic, tennis players are after all seen as a bit of an exemplary function.

It could be or his stance against the vaccine. In our country, Lacoste branding is big so I think it will be a blow out for them if they stop having Djokovic as their face. But it's their decision anyways.

Hopefully they can find tennis players that can really keep up with the latest trend and of course winning grand slams with their logo in it. And I don't think the Williams is well suited as you have said.

Its all started with Australian open and now his sponsors are worried he wont play a lot of tournaments and thats why they want to terminate those deals. Djokovic is not worried he already earned a lot plus he is probobly under contract for a couple of more years so it wont be easy to cancel them, Djokovic might even be additional paid if they want to cancel the deal.

Lol, that would be a strange move from Lacoste as Venus rarely plays anymore and the chances that she will ever win a big tournament is close to zero. Given his age, Djokovic has the highest chance to win the most grandslams, but even then I won't consider him as the GOAT  , but that's a different discussion.

Indeed, it was due to the controversy that Djokovic involved himself in the Australian Open.

He could get a new deal, but he could lose more and maybe Lacoste is just the beginning.

As far as Venus W. goes, she is being hired as a brand ambassador by Lacoste, so perhaps it doesn't concern if she is going to play or not. She may have to travel and represent the brand or even model for them.

Not really, I think the last she played was last year's Wimbledon. As far as I have read (and I have to say it didn't really interest me much), they are saying she is a tennis role model that has spent her career fighting for equality - or some kind of similar PR brainwash.

Commercially she has a lot to offer though - her following is still huge. Also - she won't be paid nearly as much as Novak was.

It's understandable if it's because of the vaccine, or because they think he won't play a lot of tournaments... but it's a bit pathetic if it's because of the war. They shouldn't associate all Serbian athletes - or all Russian athletes - with the behaviour or stance of their country. I mean, look at Rublev, he's a Russian player, and he wrote 'no war please' on the camera the other day. It would be pathetic to stop his sponsorship because of his nationality.

You have a point with the timing... but there is another answer that fits with the timing, which is that Djokovic has of course just lost his position as world number 1, which you'd imagine is not great for the sponsors.


Also he may make the news again in the next couple of days... apparently he is still listed in the draw for Indian Wells, but of course not eligible to enter the country.

I agree with all the timing points, the whole escapade in Australia and the resulting
loss in the number 1 position is a lot. Thinking about it more I would imagine the
coverage the Australia affair got was probably more of a deal breaker for Lacoste than
losing the top spot.....unless for some bizzare reason there was a clause in the
contract which stipulated the #1 spot was essential to continuation of the deal....

Big surprise... Djokovic has now withdrawn from the Indian Wells tournament.

I understand him wanting to leave it until the last minute, in case the visa restrictions are removed or he gets a special exemption, but still, this should have been resolved much earlier. Now we have another tournament where one side of the draw is much easier than the other side, which isn't really fair. If this keeps happening, tournament after tournament, then whoever is seeded to play in the DJokovic part of the draw will have easier matches and likely gain more ranking points, purely because he delays his withdrawal until the latest possible moment.
