I think reaching 20 Grand Slams at a time when there are others playing who can also do that is also ridiculous. I guess by now the most versatile player ever is probably Djokovic, but no doubt when you consider a specific surface, I guess it will be impossible to beat Nadal's record ever. I mean, sure never say never, but what the heck is another player supposed to do in order to beat Nadal's record? Just doing the maths makes it seem impossible. There is only one way out I guess: as people get older and healthier, they might also be able to play longer. This record, however, could stand for centuries clearly.

Yes, the fact that we have 3 active players who have each won 20 slams is absurd. If the others weren't playing in the same era, then it is quite conceivable that Federer and Djokovic would each have won 30 slams. Nadal less so, as he's not quite so brilliant across all surfaces.

I think we have just got used to it, but I don't think there has been a tennis era like it, with such sustained excellence from multiple players. It is coming to an end now, and these three are a tough act to follow.

Yeah, it was such a beauty to be able to witnessed this great players in this era. I mean there are a lot of good tennis players who've challenge them, that come before and after, but still they have dominated the tennis world that they won 20+ GS amongst them.

And we might not see another trio in the same generation competing against each other and winning almost Grand Slam every year between them. Djokovic though might be still around, perhaps 2-3 years and hold the record beating Federer.

Anyone watching the ATP Cup?

There were some good games yesterday and a bit of a shock defeat by Medvedev by
Humbert. Medvedev made up for it though by playing a great doubles match to win.

I watch matches which are at the end of the program like Tsitispas - Schwartzman just now. Just won my bet as well on Schwartzman to take a set which I placed in Tie break of first set when Tsitsi had mach ball. He is definitely not in his top form and I except him to struggle in AO.

Free tip, Gonzales/Molteni should destroy Pervolakis/other Tsitispas and odds are @1.45 for match line and @2.2 for straight set victory. Just hope there will not be a player change since that will void the bet. I prefer when bookies list doubles in competitions like this as Greece vs. Argentina and then it does not matter if there is player change.

And Tsitsipas is beaten by Schwartzman, I didnt realise that Tsitsipas had an ebow
operation, its possible he is not just 100%.

I have to start betting on sets too as well as outright wins, It might help my win/loss
ratio and to make gains this year.

The big 3 era is something so unique and phenomenal in terms of not only tennis but the whole sports genre. 3 players being this much dominant is hardly seen anywhere. Each of them winning 20+ grand slams is no joke at all.

I agree with you that if they played at different eras, they would surely have 30+ grand slams each. The numbers are so high that I'm getting confused that if anyone will be able to break this record. Even if someone does, that has to be at least 70 to 100 years into the future. That's how prominent these 3 have been.

I always avoid betting right at the very start of the season. Players have had a few weeks off, and need a bit of time to get back to 100% even if they're not carrying injuries. Some will be a bit fitter than others, and tennis matches often hinge on fine margins.

Me too, I was not aware by Tsitsipas has an injury that got operated, and Schwartzman? Lol, this dude is very inconsistent last year that it was good money to beat against hi if he is the favourite.

I haven't bet though, well I also bet at the start of the season just to get a good leverage.

But I will take notice of this kind of injuries to top player, it will definitely have a effect on them.

I too agree and implement this strategy, because player’s are definitely not in their best shape coming from the holiday’s, and I prefer to save save the funds for upcoming tournaments to have a clear idea about their form and  then wager on the favourites.

Lastly Tsitsipas would have definitely won had he not been injured, and in worrying news he may just skip Australian Open which will be sad for all the fans as a fit Tsitsipas would be a pleasure to watch in the Australian Open.

I don't think anybody mentioned it here which surprises me a little considering how many words were spent about Djokovic and AO....Anyway he got "medical exemption" and he is playing in Australia without need to get vaccinated.

Personally I like it that he plays and I don't believe in mandatory vaccination but after all those statements that nobody got exemption and that only vaccinated people will be able to attend...this seems like a slap in the face and another example how we are not all the same. It would be much better if they were just quiet from beginning  Grin

Correct Trofo, this isnt about personal preferences Except for he who can dictate what he wants
this is about double standards and doesnt send a great message to those who have gone
to the trouble of complying with the rules. This is about viewership and revenue.

If the reason for being vaccinated etc. is to keep everyone safe from being infected and to
try minimise the burden on the health system, why is it that one person and possibly members of his team
are allowed to ignore those? why not 10 or 100 competitors exempt, why not
a percentage of the audience, why bother with vaccination requirements at all, why is one
man exempt?

Personally I think its ridiculous. My regard of Djokovic had until today fallen from being
my favourite player to one I care little for, today it has fallen further.

Djokovic and AO....Anyway he got "medical exemption" and he is playing in Australia without need to get vaccinated.

Apparently no reason has been given for his exemption, which is unsurprising, given the criteria have been stated previously, and it doesn't appear that he fits any of them.

Last month, Victoria’s Deputy Premier James Merlino said that only those with acute medical conditions would receive an exemption, telling reporters: “Medical exemptions are just that, it’s not a loophole for privileged tennis players. It is a medical exemption in exceptional circumstances if you have an acute medical condition.”
The Australian Government’s branch of the Department of Health outlines an acute major medical condition as: “(e.g undergoing major surgery or hospital admission for a serious illness). Typically, these are time-limited conditions (or the medical treatment for them is time limited).”
Temporary medical exemptions from the Covid vaccine are also given to those with “PCR-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, where vaccination can be deferred until 6 months after the infection,” as well as those who have had “any serious adverse event attributed to a previous dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, without another cause identified, and with no acceptable alternative vaccine available.”
In some cases where “the vaccinee is a risk to themselves or others during the vaccination process”, including “a range of individuals with underlying developmental or mental health disorders” a temporary vaccine exemption may also be given.

Maybe there's an additional criterion: "or is a major tennis player, or other important figure, and is sufficiently famous that rules just don't apply to them in the same way they do to ordinary people".

I really hope he gets knocked out in the first round.

Now is official,  Djokovic will participate in Australia GS. (from his Instagram):
https://www.instagram.com/p/CYTe9fer_1K/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet
jokernole Happy New Year, everybody! Wishing you all health, love, and happiness in every present moment and may you feel love & respect towards all beings on this wonderful planet. ❤️🙏🏼

I’ve spent fantastic quality time with my loved ones over the break and today I’m heading Down Under with an exemption permission. Let’s go 2022 !! 💪🏼
Srećna svima Nova godina! Želim vam mnogo zdravlja, ljubavi, radosti i sreće.

Idemooooo ‘22 💪🏼

This is some really great news. Djokovic is my favourite player and I think only he is the only one from the big 3 who is still capable of winning more tournaments for at least 2 or 3 more years.
I would be really sad if opted out of this Australian GS. Anyone can hardly deny that he is enjoyable to watch on the court. I'm very optimistic about him winning this GS.

Firstly, I'm happy that Djokovic will be playing this GS, and secondly, there is hardly a place without politics. Some people will always get the advantages and there's nothing we can do about it. I hate to see and admit that he is getting exempted like that but it is what it is. I think revenue could be a reason for this as Djokovic will bring more viewership for the host.

It is very surprising to see AO and the Australian government lower their requirements for Djokovic and it doesnt say well about them. They recently just crushed dreams of an Indian Junior for not being vaccinated as vaccines for under 18 isn't yet permitted and testing is in process in the country and hence, he didn't have a choice to get vaccinated. Would like to know how he got the "exemption" while the Indian junior couldn't.

Edit: I just read the statement released by AO. They state that 2 independent medical authorities had gone through the case and have considered Djokovic's case as a valid reason to not be vaccination. Exact reasons haven't been mentioned.

I also read about that special permit that Djokovic gets to be able to be part of the Australian Open and i have to say that i am surprised on the one hand but on the other i also kinda expected that to be honest. Djokovic never really concealed that he is not a friend of getting vaccinated so i did not really expected that he would change that just to be able to compete. Djokovic has won the Australian Open 9 times already as of now and i am pretty sure the tournament officials really wanted him to be part of the tournament as he is also one of the biggest money makers in the sport and of course also the best player at the moment.
The statement by AO said that the applications for the special permits are anonymous so the authorities did no know which application they are reviewing. If that is true then this procedure is fine with me.

What would be hilarious and justice would be if he doesnt reach the final and didnt
get to win his 21st grand slam just yet.

In very related news.....

https://www.express.co.uk/sport/tennis/1544656/Tennys-Sandgren-Novak-Djokovic-Australian-Open-medical-exemption-Covid-vaccine-tennis-news

Interestingly Tennys Sandgren who is currently #96 and is unvaccinated cannot attend
because as he put it “because he did not meet any of the criteria listed for one.”

From the article some other players have questioned the AO's decision.

Quote
Brits Liam Broady and Jamie Murray have also come out to question the fairness of the granted medical exemption.

This I really don't understand from the Australian Government. They are one of the countries with the strictest rules, yet they give multiple tennis players (not only Djokovic) a medical exemption... Djokovic is a big name so he will always draw a bigger public, but I just hope that he gets beaten in some round (the earlier, the better lol).

And now, AO and Djokovic and to certain extent the Australian government are going to be criticised for this kind of exemptions. I agree that this will be a complete slap on the face for other players who are fully vaccinated. And now others are wishing Djokovic to not win the Australian Open because of this exemptions given to him, Lol, it will really be ironic.

They got caught redhanded in this situation which is a shame for them. But at the end of the day, there will be no one to actually raise a voice against them as I think that it will bring out nothing. They should be more aware of these kinds of stuff and such people should not be given such privilege as this shows to the people that a few beings are important to them and receive special treatment from them while the others simply don't, Very saddening.
