Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.

When you send cash via MG to zipzap, BitInstant is notified, and then on BTC-e (where BitInstant has "reserves"), they use the funds of the reserves in the process of getting you your bitcoins (*though they quote you MtGox bitcoin prices, which are greater than BTC-e's)... The cash you send them does not actually buy anything (at that time), I don't think BitInstant even gets that cash until a week or a month, or whatever, later. The problem so far is BitInstant BTC-e reserves are non-existent. They've not been replenished for a long time now. So until you see some serious "Reserves" amounts listed at https://btc-e.com/ (reserves are at $33 USD right now), I think BitInstant has to perform "manual" transfers which don't involve the reserves, but some other account that has bitcoins or USD (how much that account has I don't know). I'm also getting the feeling that for this to happen you have to contact BitInstant support, or they'll just wait and wait and sit on it - until more reserves are deposited at BTC-e and their system can try again. I'm also getting the feeling that a lot of people's transactions are falling through the cracks. Either way, I was hoping to use BitInstant a second time, but there seems to be too many issues around everything (exchange problems, reserve problems, DDoS, hackers, poor/slow service, fucked up level of little to no information, etc). And those issues keep happening over and over. If I had to guess at what's happening, BitInstant doesn't have enough money to perform all the transactions, and they are now waiting on ZipZap to pay them... The issue here is that you can get into a situation where you get so far behind and appart (you have a bunch of growing incomplete past transactions, and too little new money coming in to cover them), that at some point you can no longer do business (too many debts/liabilities that can't be paid off in 12 months) and you have to (by law) file for bankruptcy. And unless there are assets to be seized and re-distributed, everyone looses their money.

This whole fiasco is going to cost Bitinstant a large chunk of their loyal followers and it's not because we don't have our coins. It is because we've been getting the run around bull crap for a week now.
Count me as one. I had been very satisfied up until this point, but it's clear now that I can only consider them a backup exchange. I agree that the noncommunication is the dealbreaking factor. Fortunately by the time I was going to make my most recent deposit, this mess had already started, so I don't have any money tied up. I still don't have any coins though, either. 11:20 pm 02/20/13 East coast time, NO COINS
Is this a prediction or are you from the future?

OK, so does anybody have a reliable alternative for buying BTC via Moneygram, straight to a Bitcoin address then? Seeing as how Bitinstant is so quiet in this thread, their reserves have gone to nothing, and their own deadlines for fixing all of this have come and gone, I don't think we have much of a choice but to find an alternative. Is there one?
P.S. Anyone want to suggest odds for a bet that Bitinstant lost a ton of money in this hack attack, despite their assurances to the contrary? Or maybe that the whole hacking incident was just a story to give the founders a few days to get to Costa Rica with all of the money currently "stuck" in the system? If the odds are right I might put money on both of those bets.

It's been quite a while on this one. Ordered the 14th. 7d04922c-87da-4ecb-8de1-ae19605b5f15 I'm not the type to go raise a fuss, and like to let things work themselves out but this has got me pretty heated up. I did a transfer for $500 because there was something I really wanted to buy. The website said an hour but we know how that goes. So, I wait, patiently, for 24 hours. I email support, and "Seth" responds with please give us one business day (so really its 2 business days? lol). I wait, nothing, the weekend goes by nothing, a good chunk of this week, and nothing. I'm done being quiet, this is ridiculous. I'd like to know what it is I can do, I'll be researching my avenues today. If anyone has any tips, or advice, my emails is supertracks80@gmail.com, I'd appreciate your input. Sorry if I sound upset, but I was totally assured about how secure all this was. This is in reference to BitInstant.com

On friday last week (5 days ago) I paid for my Bitcoins at CVS. I got the email confirming the payment and still have not recieved the actual bitcoins to my email address. I have sent multiple messages to support 3 have not been answered and it is really important for me to find out what is going on. I use bitcoins for my job, and it has really set me back not recieving the bitcoins. I hope someone will see this and help me i have used bitinstant before multiple times with no problems. When will the Bitcoins go to my email address? My account number is 936809615.

Just and update on my situation.
It's been a week today and I still haven't received my coins (missing ~$900 worth). I did get a PM from Yankee this morning saying he'd look into it, but nothing after. I rewrote him asking for status and he got right back to me asking for my order info again. I also got another message from Rachel this afternoon asking for my order information again. Hopefully, all this activity will result in getting my coins.
Good luck, everyone!
Mia

I've been waiting 5 days now for a large transaction to arrive at BTC-e. Support is no help, now the website is down. If I ever see my money back, I won't be using BitInstant EVER AGAIN.

I was under the impression your weekend problems were resolved at this point. Please take your site down if you cannot process payments. There is no need to continue accepting peoples money if your service is in shambles.

Site is now down entirely. I'm guessing they are in Costa Rica by now . These are not technical issues, they are financial. Whether they are waiting on a payment from CashPayment.com, or have just run off with the cash, I don't know. But it's quite clear that they are out of Bitcoins to send and reserves at the various exchanges. That is why they aren't sending transactions out.

I thought they vanished too but I was ignorant and did not include my order information in my support request. I sent it out and my payment has been processed. Wasn't instant, but still faster than anything else out there given the situation. Great work, Charlie.

Hey All, Most of your orders on the last 2 pages have been processed. Alot of you smartly PM'd me and got your coins. You also updated your posts, which I sincerely appreciate you doing. Just because I dont respond here does not mean I am not active, I answer every PM super quick. Update Wens Feb 20th, 8:30 PM ESTFew things: 1 - By now, every order we have processed from the DOS this weekend. There is quite possibly more as well. For this reason, Bitcoin Address is still not enabled. 2- If you still have not had your order processed. Please PM me your Order ID ASAP. Do not post it here, I wont see it until later. 3- We always give you the BTC at time of your deposit, and if the issue was our fault we always refund fees. I was under the impression your weekend problems were resolved at this point. Please take your site down if you cannot process payments. There is no need to continue accepting peoples money if your service is in shambles.

Although you are joking, many people could believe you. The issue has nothing to do with what you said, and if you'd take time to read our update, you'd know why. http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/18r5hi/update_on_weekend_bitinstant_transactions/I've been waiting 5 days now for a large transaction to arrive at BTC-e. Hey, can you PM me your Order info? Order number 20daa2ec-38dd-4198-ac1a-e25550696ca3, placed on 2/15. Still nothing. Help would be appreciated
Processed! I placed an order and paid for it on January 30, and still have not received the Bitcoins. I have sent several messages to support and live chat and they have told me they were going to process the order manually but I still haven't received them. Tomorrow marks the third week of waiting for the Bitcoins.
Order ID: 930f1529-b982-4d6e-9660-fe881d8077ce
Thanks in advance.
Has this been resolved? Any update on the removal of "Bitcoin Address' as a receiver in Bitinstant? It's been missing for days now..........
Yup, see my post above. Charlie Just got my failed order resolved, although it took longer than it should have, I am happy that I did receive a refund for the fee.
Awesome!

Yankee,
While I'm waiting for the BTC to address/email functionality to come back up can I use the bitstamp option? Are you able to process those requests in a timely manner at this time or should I wait until your system is a little more stable? I don't want to use that option if I'm going to have to wait days for it to go through and back you up more with manual transactions.
Thanks,
Minova
