A unit that is free to the Bitcoin Foundation is still paid for by someone - in this case by Avalon. Bitcoin doesn't grow on merkle trees, you know.

You mean Merkel trees?

Grin

Hey, the line under my avatar doesn't read "Spelling, Gangnam style" for a reason, you know Smiley

Erhm.. your spelling was correct. I was just trying to be punny.
I was refering to Angela Merkel

It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

Also, congrats Team Avalon!  You did it!  The first ASICs to ship are yours.  My hat's off to you.

Which Avalon customer has the lowest number?

We can keep tabs on who's getting their tracking number first by asking the people with the lowest numbered order.

Please, out of respect for bitcoin community, send a photo to end the uncertainty for months with the ASICs.

It's already late night in China. Unlikely that they are going to shoot pics/videos instead of taking some much needed sleep.

My name and order quantity were edited to protect the innocent. Wink

(Order number is real though)

Mod edit: Hello idiots who can not read: please note "order quantity were edited". This isn't a real order for $98k in product.

Yeah, really.  Let them get some rest.

I'm sure jgazrik or the Bitcoin Foundation ppl would be honored to post the first pics/video of one.

I'm wondering what would be an optimal use of the demo unit after Bitcoin Foundation posts the review. Auction it? My guess is that someone stateside would be willing to pay a premium to be able to tear down the unit for truely in-depth review.

I would imagine that at this point avalon has stood by its product, to a level that they feel actions speak louder then words or pictures (see BFL thread if you think pics=proof). Im as curious as anyone, and itching to see the next batch open up for sale, but a review from an avalon recipient would mean far more then what an avalon rep could post.

Plus, these boards have so many trolls, avalon probably figures anything they post will be scrutinized and called out as a hoax based on an image. Wait 3-4 days for DHL to do its thing and the concrete proof will appear

BS. Posting a picture only takes 1 minute, anyways, you shouldn't expect that from them as they never did in 8+ months.

I'll post photos and a review when my unit arrives.

I was surprised that I was the only core developer who paid for a unit.  Followed the shotgun approach:  ordered units from all the people working on ASICs.

Thank you jgarzik. But wouldn't it be really easy for someone from Avalon just to take a photo before shipping, its kinda weird and smells fishy - selling something with no pic.

One possible scenario is that they had manage to assemble just very few units in order to ship something on 20 and what they have left in hands is prototype level, not worth for a show.

Quoting Lunostre on reddit, which seems like a sane response:

Pics would be nice, but this is a low fuss company. The manually assempled FPGA's he sold last year was produced on order and driven to the post office on moped.

They might have ramped up their operation, but they don't do much publich relations. Located in China and if Bitcoin becomes viral there, this technically bright guy, could find him self in a lot of legal trouble, as manufacturing Bitcoin hardware could be considered subversive and against several laws.

I have no association with Avalon other than being a customer, FWIW.

Tiny operations in China/Taiwan/HK often work like this.

Two weeks?  Smiley  One hopes they did not ship it via slow-boat!  Smiley

(for the record, I do not know shipping method, nor have a tracking number)
