Anyone that doesn't like the newbie restriction should go create their own forum without the restriction and gather up all the newbie users that don't like this one. Sounds like a viable business opportunity to me that doesn't involve buying a bunch of rigs.

Why stifle the community at such an important time in Bitcoins growth? Bad move.

Well when you have a bunch of anonymous trolls deliberately trying to incite panic I think it makes sense to take measures to restrict the nonsense.

Well, a bunch of anonymous speculators have been doing the exact opposite (shameless bullish propaganda) for months without being blamed by anyone on the contrary. I want to make it clear that these people are not representative of bitcoin.

Bitcoin does not care whether it's exchange rate with the dollar is high or low.
There is absolutely no notion of price in the Bitcoin protocol, and it will work just the same whether the USD/BTC exchange rate is at 100:1 or 0.1:1.

Don't buy into the stories of people pretentending that they are protecting the exchange rate in order to protect Bitcoin.
This is pure desinformation.

I don't agree with this either! it will take ages for me to be able to post and will certainly cluttter the "newbies" section up with spam and other irrelevant stuff.  Also, lots of bitcoiners use this forum to be contacted about their mining pool etc. and people wouldn't be able to contact them.

I originally thought 50 posts was cool and a reasonable hurdle, but after 10 or so highly relevant and value added posts, I'm exhausted. I'm thinking 20 posts might be better.

I actually think the time between posts could be increased to more like 5, along with a reduction down from 50. If you can crank out a post a minute, you know they are garbage anyway.

I'm just a newbie, but I thought I remember seeing something about dark pools. If you are going to dump 9.5K bitcoins, wouldn't you use a dark pool so you didn't crash the market. It's doesn't help the seller that his coins are selling for smaller and smaller amounts.

Also, if you are concerned about holding coins during a crash, is there a way to put in the equivalent of a stop loss order with the exchanges? I.e., get me out asap if the price falls under $X. So you don't wake up and see you've lost 50%.

Plus, any seasoned trader knows that if you know there is going to be volatility, you can make money. Make volatility your friend. Put in lowball "bids" and amass coins at the bottom of the range. Larger orders at increasingly lower, and potentially ridiculous bids.

Good lord! 50 posts? It'll take a month+ to post 50 times if I'm constrained to this stupid Newbie box!

Well shit, that solves 2 minutes of vast confusion.

Funny

It was about 3 minutes for me..
I was in the 5870 thread looking around and I was like how the heck do you post a reply.

Anyway I have 3 5870 cards mining.

950MHz/370-390 mhash/s
950MHz/370-390 mhash/s
1GHz/400-420 mhash/s

The 2 950 cards are in crossfire or they would be running 1GHz as well.

But as it stands the shader temp on one of them reaches 100°c at the voltage required for 1GHz, so I run them at 950MHz.

I posted a few entries in jgarzik's cpuminer thread and even posted code that has been pulled into the cpuminer git tree. Clearly I'm no spammer so please allow me to continue posting.

Why stifle the community at such an important time in Bitcoins growth? Bad move.

Combination of peer pressure and greed is what I can see, but I hope desperately to be proven wrong either with an alternative method of keeping trolls down which allows for equality no matter who is friends with whom, or an reasonable explanation of why there simply was no choice but to cut off a forum from its original open discourse right after a huge price dip.

I want for decentralized currency to succeed and it would really be a shame if bitcoins downfall and inability to be that light in the darkness boiled down to a few forum admins that got led away from their original objective because their eyes were replaced with shiny gold bitcoins.

I was in the middle of a conversation via PM trying to offer a couple of developers some work and all of a sudden I couldn't find the reply button:)

You now need only 4 hours of online time plus 5 posts to become established. 8 hours seemed a little hard to get -- it might take some people several days.
This looks like a much better idea

hey everyone... yea a few minutes of confusion for me as well lol...

anybody in favor of some BTC chess?? i think it'd work like chess with liquor - each piece is worth a couple bitcents depending on point value

for example .01 for pawns, .03 for bishops/knights, etc...

let me know what you think and perhaps this post will allow everyone to see that i am not a bot... just a miner trying to get by lol

That's nice and all but we would like some justification to put on the paperwork. The paper-pushers don't want us letting out people willy-nilly.

I just spent the last 5-10minutes attempting to quote and reply to another individual in another subforum.

I like the idea of the newbie section... however, I dislike the fact that I now have to read (probably subpar) posts in here for awhile until I can get moved up.  >.<  Interesting setting.
