I do think it's fair, only the 4 hour thingy...dunno bout that
I suppose it is a good way to encourage enough browsing of the forums to get at least a basic sense of the community. Agreed, the time barrier make sense (while the 5 posts do not). It's harder to write a script to post things that don't identify the script as a bot, then it is to write a script to surf around the forum for four hours. Harder, not impossible. Every now and again, a spam bot does make it through. It also encourages real people to ask questions about bitcoin that they don't understand, before they have a chance to dive into the deeper forums and post stuff based on ignorance. As this post should prove well enough, we are still paying attention to the newbie section, even if we don't respond often. If you have a question, start a newbie topic and you will get an answer. |

that's very true. I think my problem is less in quantity/quality of posts but in the login time. 4 hrs on a single website is a VERY long time for me.

Just leave the forum up on your browser and go do your thing for 4 hours.  |

The newbie restrictions make sense in the context of the ID technology currently being used on this forum (and other similar forums), which essentially have an extremely low barrier of entry.
Isn't it however ironic that a forum based on a currency that uses proof-of-work still does not have access to an ID-platform which uses anonymous proof of work to prove the persistence of identity across time and space?
It appears to me that a simple and pseudo-anonymous way to provide access control to the forum would be for x BTC to be posted as collateral against user ID? (to be refunded after a trial period is over, or to be confiscated in case a user is banned).
BTC solves the problem of cheap ID?

Sorry about the post, it is incomplete: ... since I once was a forum admin and had problems with spammers a lot. So, I tottally agree with the restrictions, including PM. |
