Decentralization does not equal even influence. This is a tired old argument. Any system has hierarchies, and most participants will be at the bottom. Next issue.

It equals lack of influence, and when block validators are doomed to perpetually be some number around 1-10, it's guaranteed to be a permissioned ledger with blacklists run by the govt or corporate cartel.  You would likely need block validators in the tens of thousands or more for it not to be the case.  The only feasible way to accomplish that is where EVERYONE processes their own transactions with unprofitable PoW, just like email PoW. Unprofitable PoW is an unworkable system though, so you're back to square one of a decentralized digital currency being 100% impossible.

How do you guys deal with excessive drinking? I mean, I'm functional, but would still like to cut down.

I had to just stop it all together, and sought the support of AA for a few years. If you feel that you may have developed a physical dependency, (like having to drink everyday to avoid the shakes,) I would seek medical advice before attempting to stop or cut down.

How much does one need to drink daily to develop physical dependency? I guess it depends on the person, but still maybe you can give a reference?

I think I am in the same boat (no pun intended) than Ibian... completely functional, almost no effect (except the weight gain), but still an absurdly high amount of daily alcohol consumption since maaaaany years ago. I did switch from whisky+coke to beer and wine since I stopped smoking though. That was easy.

I was married to an alcoholic and the best explanation I found for it was this...

When you drink you're essentially drinking a poison. The first few times your body is like 'WTF?' and you puke and feel miserable the next day. Your body continues to fight it for a while but if you're drinking large amounts of alcohol before you're 25 or so while your body is still developing (the earlier, the worse) your body is like 'ok, I guess this is a thing that is necessary'. So your body begins to adapt. It changes your chemistry so that drinking alcohol is part of what you do, it eventually gets to the point where it is something your body needs.
It is at this point that you are an alcoholic. When you go without alcohol your body starts to crave it, as though you are going without water. If you go too long without it you start to get angry for no reason, you convince yourself that having a drink is ok. Your body needs the alcohol.

I can't say what the way forward is because your body chemistry is already altered. I am not sure if stopping drinking will change it back...if you're much older it may take years. For my wife it just got worse and worse...she eventually passed away partly due to the drinking (and trying to use prescriptions to counter some of the problems brought on by drinking).

Personally I have stopped almost completely. Not because I was addicted but I have realized that I may be rich enough in my old age to be able to afford the life extension treatments that most will not have access to. But I don't want to be old and falling apart when that happens so I'm trying to choose a healthy lifestyle. Alcohol adds nothing positive to your body and for me was always something I used as a crutch to socialize better. But fuck that, I'd rather live for 100s of years than be the life of the party.

Alright, the #1 most reliable indicator in this thread of when to dump was anytime Elwar mentioned the word "seastead".  He has now doubled down and mentioned living in the movie Elysium in space and using bitcoin to pay for it, which is probably an even stronger reverse indicator.  I have made a lot of trades before.  A LOT.  Most of you have made very few trades.  Anytime I had some stupid thought in my brain resembling these Elwar delusions when my balance sheet was rocketing higher, the market immediately crashed two seconds later.

There are no known life extension technologies (so far).
The most promising tech currently would be senolytics, but preliminary data show that the result would be longer "healthspan", but not an extended lifespan.
Eventually, we might be able to upload ourself into some substrate, but it might not be characterized as a life extension, but some kind of "presence", perhaps.
I am not sure that this would even be desirable from an uploadee perspective.
I can see that it could be good for relatives for 'closure', perhaps.

People who believe things like this, that humans can just magically upload themselves into a robot, are classical 'smart idiots'.  In every one of these hypothetical cases, both entities can exist at the same time, so you have not uploaded jack shit.  You have merely created a copy - a clone.

We've already had this discussion in-depth on this forum with a Monero dev under the delusion that immortality can be achieved by uploading yourself into a robot:

So Bloomberg's finest got through to a secretary who said 'no idea' and 'nunya bizniz anyways' and an article was born.
I would also be suspect of Bloomberg's relationship with the large exchanges that are recently launching their cash tied stable coins.

I agree.

Can someone make Arthur Hayes shut up ?

CCN reported earlier this week that Hayes, a former Citigroup trader, is now predicting that the bitcoin downtrend could last another 18 months, mirroring the “nuclear bear market” the crypto industry experienced in 2014 and 2015. Writing in Friday’s edition of the BitMEX Crypto Trader Digest, Hayes doubled down on that portentous outlook.

I doubt much experimentation could be done on land under most governments of the world. That's why I see seasteading as a necessary step between here and there.

There are several promising technologies, no magic bullet but it may be a combination of several things. Likely tailored to the individual.

I don't follow it close enough to know the tech (yet) but I believe it will be something available to only the super rich early on (like most new tech), so part of my hodl strategy involves saving for that tech instead of blowing it on lambos now.

Recently I have been given a peek into just how much Bitcoin will benefit the world. The early adopters of Bitcoin are the same ones that believe in this tech and the reason behind it. They are now very rich and have different dreams than the rich that came before us. Very interesting times ahead.

There is one massive physical benefit to it. Stress is an even bigger killer than alcohol, and depending on your mental state and the situation you live in, it may be less unhealthy to drink than to be stressed. Still it's better to find some alternative outlet, and while I certainly want to live a few thousand years if possible, that's not enough of a carrot given that it is unlikely to become possible in the next hundred years.

I have Ibian ignored, but I find "cold turkey" works best, provided you aren't a completely alcohol-dependent degenerate, in which case, I understand there may be some possibly life-threatening withdrawal symptoms to deal with (eg: delirium tremens complications).

Emotionally, it helps to treat alcohol with disdain and hatred for a little while. "Fuck this alcohol. Why am I drinking so much and letting it rule my life. I'm the boss of me. I'll show it !!!" sorta thing, and mind-trick yourself into having the fortitude to maintain restraint for a while.

I just had a single Greyhound to unwind a bit. Had another three beers with Rick earlier in the week after he had a rough day at the office.

4 drinks total in one week is progress I can live with, compared to a six-pack-of-beer a day prior trend.

If you can go for a week without a drink you're not addicted. If you can't then you're addicted.

.

I did a year to the day just to prove to myself I could once.

When I order ed a drink the bartender looked at me and said "You don't drink". Smiley

Yeah, I lived in bars for a good 20 years. Wink

That was right after I got kicked out and banned from AA for being a disrupting influence when I called them all a bunch of weak willed pussies.

I wasn't in agreement with the judge that ordered me there. Tongue

I'm actually quite lucky that I don't enjoy drinking alone at all and never do. But I love to get rocked with friends!

...

I love the trippy drugs. Shrooms, Acid. Very fun. Egodeath is a powerful tool.

They ere not mutually exclusive. Smiley

... I'd rather live for 100s of years than be the life of the party.

Live fast, die young and leave a good looking corpse.

Fuck that, lets hang on with withered claws and hold the grim reaper down with sheer force of will! Smiley

I’m Italian.

I am sorry to hear that. Suddenly my excessive drinking doesn't seem so bad.

It's not a physical dependency, more stress related. All the personal shit that used to fuck with me is taken care of; finances, personal freedom, usual bullshit. What's bothering me now is that as far as I can tell the entire west is heading towards a financial and cultural collapse. Soviet style on a grand scale.

My health is actually improving even as I continue to drink almost as much as before. But it's a bad habit that has to be gotten rid of.

... take up weed? ditch the booze, caffeine treadmill.

then you can migrate through the full spectrum, shrooms, acid, powders, crack, smack and meth ... the final stop being fentanyl

booze will be the last of your worries at that point, i can guarantee it.

I love the trippy drugs. Shrooms, Acid. Very fun. Egodeath is a powerful tool.

then its a good case i'm a LOOOOOONG term hodler as well and not a blowing BTC's on dumb shit etc kinda guy....

the ALCOHOL post did come from deep, especially when someone beloved is an addict, and is for a BIG part being lost in the struggle with it.
in my family my grandmother was a very BIG alcoholic as well ( a very emotional drinker), she the best person ever, but f*** when she finishes already 1 big glass of red wine, the way she changes and trash talk whatever comes in mind is unseen..... @ this time again she stopped for over 6 months or so, but
but stopping for ever just does not work, she always relapses and thats the story of real alcoholics they can't stop cause even when they do, there is always something that emotional triggers them to just take the bottle again.
i think for myself i follow a relative healthy lifestyle doing sports eating OK and not drinking to much just occasionally on resto etc....
even my girl is turning meat into as well now thats a bit more difficult for me but yeah i do not take drugs, i'm not an alcoholic and i do sports..... .
(when you have seen people on addictions from close, that changes a lot)
so i know what its been for a guy like ELWAR having a wife that addicted to alcohol (thats even way more close as i have with my grandmother ofcourse).
good you made the choice for yourself and be going for the healthy life-style and not be on the drinking (or VERY occasionally in your case).
