You want a magnet-proof wallet?

Oops. I'm showing my age again.

hollorith(sP?) code storage. gotta run

Punch cards would be good for storing a private key, so long as they don't flutter off into the wind and get mixed together out of order. Or if you lose one. Probably better off just writing it down on a piece of paper...

Well hey, if they ran the HAL-9000 off those things, maybe they could run a decentralized network. Maybe not.

These modern ones aren't even floppy.

8 inches of truly floppy is the only way to move data
Are you saying the Floppy disks are still in the market?

don't think so. Haven't flapped one in er, decades I should think

just always seemed odd that they were still called floppy when after the 5 1/4 they weren't. I suppose "hard" had been taken...

It may be that many who read WO, have never seen it.

Floppy disk > https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floppy_disk
The mighty Floppy disk
The only mobile storage available back then.
Who had one/some?

These were called "stiffy" disks back in my part of town. The 8" floppy disks are the much bigger cousin of this guy and is what I used to play Space quest 1 on.

That's an interesting idea... Of course if you're a moron who uses a really simple mnemonic its not going to help you. From the how it works:

"These words are pulled from a specific list of 2048 words.  In this list, the first 4 letters are unique to each word.

In other words, there are no two words in this list with the same first 4 letters.

That means if you have the first 4 letters, you know the rest of the word by looking for those first 4 letters in the BIP39 list. Some wallets will even fill in the rest of the word once the first 4 letters are entered."

Hmm... so its built for a 6 word mnemonic out of a list of 2048 words... well that makes 17.54 trillion possible combinations so its probably OK. Of course how you generate the seed matters immensely as well.

Great little machine, years ahead of its time.

If Commodore hadn't bankrupted itself with an ill-advised foray into gaming consoles, the Apple Mackintosh would have withered on the vine.

The Amiga had it beat for graphics and sound and the PC ruled the business world.

What a loss.

Good morning hodlers.

Allied forces have once again taken the offensive against entrenched fiat sympathizers. Moderate gains against $5k resistance has brought the fighting spirit back out for Bulls, who are looking to press their advantage with further upside movement. The action is surely bound to intensify as forces engage in hand to hand combat on this highly contested battlefield over the coming weekend.

Port Control has received several reports of strange sightings atop the battlements. We would like to assure the troops that there is absolutely nothing unusual happening and that they are not receiving a higher than usual dose of gamma rays. Port Control would also like to add that no, we have not been taken over by an advanced benevolent cat like race from a distant galaxy.  That is all.

---------
Still stuck between $4.9k support and $5.1k resistance as we move along a small channel. A firmer floor has been building upwards thanks to strong support at $5k and its possible we might break above the cloud again.  More sideways movement as we retest the upper bounds of resistance. #dyor

Madame Alexa knows how many Bitcoin you have

i will never own an alexa/google/amazon voice activated device, unless there is an actual physical switch to cut the mics out of circuit.

i didnt really understand fully the ramification till the other day when i was going over with my wife  how to recover my btc stack in case of my death. i was going to tell her the passphrase to my trezor (it would be written down also, this was just for discussion). but when i was going to tell the the passphrase i stopped. because while i dont own an alexa/google/amazon device, i do have a smartphone and smart watch, which have mics of course.

so here i am in my own house, wondering if anything i say might go out to servers that humans can access (humans review random snips of voice data).

wtf, my own home, which i have spent considerable time and money hardening both physical and electronic networks, is useless if the closed source algo that trigger sending data for no fully understood by the end user.

btw many modern tvs have mics and web cams built in now. and IoT stuff like security cameras, some of which have mics so you can use then for intercoms, are notoriously bad at security and most will never get updates.

so much the attach surfaces are pretty big.

now i dont assume my phone and watch and compromised, but with the amount of money i have in btc it would be foolish to at least consider these scenarios,

like any smartphone or laptop with a built in mic is powered off and put in another room when setting up wallet seed words. paranoia? sure but it is based on failings of the current tech used.

Faraday cage room and Cryptosteel. Wink
Thinking of it, I'll probably just have to build a room like that when I bother getting a new property. Just in case I ever need to have some serious talks with somebody. Faraday cage + no electronic devices inside (smartphones could still record and send the audio later).

I think these kinds of problems are good to have though. They keep you on the edge if you consider them and keep you from turning into a potato and they're not as bad as having to worry about getting shot or eaten by a bear.

For the same price of the faraday cage room you can build a nice pool and have those conversations in it. Just make sure the other guys fully submerge at some point if they have long hair where they could hide some tiny recorder.

- You don't need to stop using your potentially exploitable devices if you use them right. Ie: I have cameras all over my places, the perimeter ones I don't really care and assume someone could be watching (even if I have taken all the measures to stop that), the inside home ones are only turned when there's noone inside... again I don't care if someone would be watching/listening (when we are not there).

- Don't think only potentially "spy" devices could be an attack vector. You said you were discussing key recovery with your wife... good thing you didn't say the passphrase but not because of your smartphone an/or smart watch.... more traditional eavesdropping methods like a laser beam mic could be employed against you. Always try to consider all potential attack vectors, and pay special attention to traditional ones as thats where the easiest exploit usually comes.
