An IOU is an acknowledgment of an extrinsic debt.  That’s a completely separate concept from a token which has its own intrinsic worth (or lack thereof). In this sense bitcoin is a token no different from a seashell (a virtual sea shell).

There’s no such thing as a contract without a counterparty. There might be an offer open to the public, but it is not a contract until concluded by the parties.

If nothing else, this whole alt coin pump is nailing shut the lid on the Bcash coffin.

Good. At least xrp is shameless.

If jihan wu and roger ver go down because of xrp I’m delighted

+1

Anyhow the xrp pump is over. It's time to quickly pump up ETH a bit before the honey badger gets a turn.

I thought this was the price discussion topic for bitcoin not a discussion thread for the price action of cripple. But now we're at it anyway. I hope if it does hit $5 it will be dunked to the outskirts of the sub top 100 on cmc. We still need a good meme for a legendary pump 'n dump.

We would need a separate thread for discussing altcoins in general from a Bitcoin perspective.

Yeah, I know there is a BT subsection for altcoins but it is pure rubbish and full of blind retarded shills. Not what I am looking for.

It is but if the average noob / the media is occupied with X it is only valid to point that out as it clearly is explaining why BTC is stagnant for a while even though crypto marketcap is increasing massively.

All these alt coins look cheap even though you mostly can't do anything with them and many have massive supply.
I can fully understand why someone will jump on those bandwagons and not a $15K per BTC vehicle at the moment.

ha, it is way more likely to be number 1 then under 100 (ripple has always been near the top also). I wish this wasn't happening, and by all logic there should of been a dump by now. But, its not happening. I don't think this is like 2013 where the alts were literally just pump and dumps, the coins now are too mature and with ever increasing innovation. It will be very hard for BTC to maintain its dominance.

I think what we are seeing at the moment, is that BTC is now just becoming another coin, it may not lose it's top place this time, but it will happen eventually.

I could see nearly double that -  the only positive is that it appears that btrash is taking more of a hit than btc

Look at decred as a random example of what is possible

So make another one, self moderate it, and deal with the shit that is altcoins.

Meantime Bitcoin seems to be stuck between 14-15k. Alts are going up because people perceive them to be cheaper or something, truth is they are like computer stocks in 2000 when every stock was bid up without any fundementals. Crash will come and money will flow back to the stuff with promise. By then Bitcoin had better have segwit running properly.

My question, how will people monetize the LN?

Nah what we see here is banks trying to take over the space. I don't think ripple will go away anytime soon, these guys are not Roger Ver... Can pump XRP for a lot longer
I bought some XRPs with my play money, but I'll probably hodl my BTC stash till 0 - unfortunately they figured out that people greed is the best tool to beat BTC

Edit so I don't look like a bear: I think there is still a good chance we get out of the top resistance and push up, same greed/fomo that has driven the alts surge might move BTC high

Segwit is running properly, its just a number of the big generators of TX's refuse to upgrade. - why?
LN has monetization built in, you can collect a small fee for relaying, it effectively allows you to put your BTC to work.

Interesting. I can see pool operators not wanting to upgrade, they get fees. However exchanges should have updated now to provide lowest cost transactions. Hm.

154000 transactions unconfirmed, this is still a problem....

The big generators are mainly exchanges. Exchanges profit on trades. They are making a killing with current situation, with all this pump and dumps, trades between coins, fast frequency trades, etc.... compare that with a situation in which Bitcoin was just working perfectly and people was just buying and hodling it. No contest.

At the same time, I hope they know that if Bitcoin fails it will be the doom for all crypto, so they are doing just the minimum necessary to avoid that, ie: slowly upgrading to segwit, etc...

Segwit itself was never going to fix network congestion but just an intermediary step to the real life changing evolution: LN.

Were all traders here though.

I'm not sure you can even consider this market "trading", more like attempting to analyze which way the scam is going:

Yup. You've got an everage fluctuation of btc around the double digit. And that's just the bitcoin, most alts can get a +/- 30% in a matter of hours.
Anyone saying they trade on a market like that is just fooling themselves.
Which doesn't mean they can't make profit of course, but just that they aren't really in control.
