http://uk.businessinsider.com/bill-gates-on-cryptocurrency-2018-2?r=US&IR=T

Billionaire philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said no technology has "caused deaths in a fairly direct way" to the extent that cryptocurrencies have.
He said that the ease with which people can anonymously buy drugs is a major problem, and suggested that cryptocurrencies are used to launder money and fund terrorist organizations.
Gates also added that "the speculative wave" around initial coin offerings and cryptocurrencies is "super risky."

He keeps changing his mind about it. In January Microsoft removed its Bitcoin’ payment option, then quickly restored it.

https://cointelegraph.com/news/microsoft-removes-bitcoin-as-payment-option-for-microsoft-store

Quote
In a blow for Bitcoin enthusiasts, Microsoft Corporation has removed the ‘Bitcoin’ payment option from its active payment instruments.

Quote
Update: Microsoft has restored Bitcoin as a payment option "after working with our provider to ensure lower Bitcoin amounts would be redeemable by customers."

Make up your mind Bill.

Why is Microsoft still accepting payment in bitcoins if Bill thinks they "caused deaths in a fairly direct way"?

Bill Gates retired from Microsoft 10 years ago. He owns maybe ~1% of MSFT stock.

Oh I thought he still had some control over Microsoft even though he's retired. So Microsoft doesn't give a shit if Bill thinks bitcoin's shit?

Vastly offtopic - but more relevant than race talk.

Bill Gates is the same guy who said "64 kB should be enough for anyone". Now he denies the quote is legit, but he sure acted like it, failing to endow DOS and the first Windows versions with proper memory addressing.

I almost didn't want to respond to this but... well...  No.

First, he never said that. Second, it was not 64k, but 640 Ki. Lastly, have you ever looked at the architecture of an 8088? It weren't no 6800. 1 MiB was the limit before resorting to silly paging techniques like those required on an 8051 or somesuch. Some area needed to be set aside for drivers, HW, and OS. High memory was chosen for that - less than half.
Right, it's 640, I was off by a factor of 10.

8088... no, never touched one. But I do have a secondhand idea of how an 80x86 works - and I think 286 and 386 (full 32 bit addressing possible) were current at the time he is reported to have said that (late 80's/early '90s). Advanced users were forced to use memory extender add-ons. The memory model concept was an ugly kludge, even if the quote is a fake.

Quote
Sure, in retrospect we probably would have done it different. But I'm guessing ol' Bill never dreamed that the crude CP/M boot loader and disk reader that he bought would form the foundation for the bulk of computing for decades to come.
By that time, he knew already. Hence his dream of conquering the world with the Microsoft Network.

I'd say it depends on the drugs one buys.

And even if it's some "wrong" drug, getting it anonymously on the Internet sure beats looking for a fix in dodgy places.

I'd say so.

Besides Bill was never much of a visionary anyway. He lucked into Windows monopoly but other than that... good for Microsoft to not pay attention to what he thinks.

While the lawsuit is a nonsensical fight over unrelated funds that never belonged to either party, it offers the rest of us a valuable reminder of how you'll easily get taken advantage of if you don't follow the #1 rule of Bitcoin:
Don't trust. Verify.
Put simply, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Fortunately, thanks to Bitcoin, that's now as easy as a single cryptographic signature.

Funny how Wright has never provided one?

What if this whole elaborate lawsuit was concocted to simply call Craig's bluff and expose him as a fraud?

Its not near as much fun up there as down here along the Wall.

What if this whole elaborate lawsuit was concocted to simply call Craig's bluff and expose him as a fraud?

Could be and I hope so..or perhaps it is the other way..to get it tied up in legalize for years to keep what ever fantasy he(they) have alive via the US injustice system.

Other way round.  The law suit has been cooked up to “prove” Craig is Satoshi.  R/BTC will eat it up and pore over every page.

Is there a source on the internet statement? I can see how somebody would conclude that "64 kB of memory should be enough". But the fucking internet?

I'd say it depends on the drugs one buys.

so much this

Actually, with silk road, there was, really for the first time ever, some semblance of peer review and quality feedback.

I would argue that it probably reduced harm while it operated.

And who the fuck is Bill to decide for others how they may alter their consciousness anyway?

Seconded. The criminalization and stigmatization of drugs causes more harm than good from a social, economical and public health perspective. Not to mention the tresspassing on individual liberty or the fact that drug crime literally wouldn't exist if it wasn't a billion dollar industry.
