I would like to hear people’s stories about how they first heard about Bitcoin ?

I read about it in Wired Magazine in early 2013.  I was familiar with gold farming in WOW so it didn’t seem too outlandish.  It took a second mention in the media in November 2013 for me to pay attention and find this forum on google.

A poker playing friend told me about them in ~2010.
I used a $75 prepaid/gift credit card I received when I bought a set of 4 tires to buy about 5 of them when they were ~ $12.  I used a convoluted series of services (Virwox, dwolla and possibly liberty reserve?).

I began playing poker with them, and once I had won a few I sold enough to send the $75 cash back to my bank account again via dwolla.  I continued to play poker with Bitcoin for a few years, mostly on Seals with Clubs.  Over this period I began to UNDERSTAND what bitcoin actually was, and meant for the world...  I kept playing poker to win them.

Though I mined a little from time to time, and also even traded a few altcoins here and there I essentially never bought or sold very much Bitcoin at all... and really mostly only when it was at MUCH lower prices.

I did take a stake in Monero.  Similarly to my poker stake, once the Monero had risen a bit, I sold enough of it to more than pay back the initial trade, raising my Bitcoin a touch, and keeping a little pile of Monero, which I still hold.

Last year I bought my wife an I a trip to Hawaii with bit of BTC...

Otherwise... all my chips are still on the table so to speak. Wink

In the end... if Ver and faketoshi, and the IMF and Bilderburgers and whatever the next attack is can somehow destroy Bitcoin (which I doubt) at least I went to Hawaii!

I reopened a medium-sized short around 5.6k. Just in case she's only teasing us with this move up.

The hardest part is figuring out sensible stops.

Sorry for little OT about btc market.  Tongue

The cynic would say a move down is preceded by a sharp move up to remove shorts with close stops.

I heard of bitcoin in 2011-12 for the first time while it was largely associated with silk roads. Living hand to mouth at the time raising children and didn't have 2 nickels to rub together.
Then in late 2016 I met a guy who had loads of mining rigs living in Bali. He told me and everyone else he was processing data for large companies. No mention of coins.  I discovered what he was really doing some months later and it was the shroud of secrecy around his "business" that led me to investigate and eventually discover the little known fundamentals behind bitcoin.
After much research it became clear to me that I'd found a peaceful revolutionary tool that aligned with and greatly enhanced my activism. Subsequent bull run of 2017 concreated this.

I might know the dude you're talking about. If it's him, he's now in Manila.
Actually good crypto scene in Indo, particularly Bali. Best in the whole SEA.

What will Roger say on CNBC next time? It was all a mistake? BABcoin ore BCHABC is the real vision?  Undecided

He also need to make the necessary 'fix' for bitcoin.com. How will he scam newcommers buying BCHABC?

This split is not good news for the bagholders but very good news for Bitcoin, the general public knows now what we mean with centralised shitcoins  Kiss

Craig Wright in particular completely and irremediably made an ass of himself when he proclaimed to be Satoshi yet could give no evidence whatsoever.
And his recent tweet made AFTER bitcoin dropped was cringeworthy.

Also puzzling how his SV is sitting at a mkap equivalent to that of ADA..
You have one solid project made by an Ethereum co founder and a team of pros, versus a spin off of an already debatable coin led by a guy with delirium of grandeur and -cherry on the fucking cake- that coin's existance isn't even acknowoledged by most exchanges. Wish I could short this shit.

I was heavily involved in trying to get Ron Paul elected in 2008 which involved keeping up to date on most things going on on Ron Paul Forums.

After the 2008 elections we moved forward with the liberty movement (which was usurped by the corporate Tea Party) and kept each other informed on various projects related to liberty and freedom. Bitcoin was mentioned early on, then mentioned more. I'd been a big gold bug and had always tried to figure out how to convert all of my money into gold while still being able to spend it. I figured if I could at least demonstrate how one person can do it, then it would allow others to do the same. Problem was that gold requires storage which costs money. Any gold credit/debit card charged a fee per use and a monthly storage fee.

When someone first mentioned bitcoin and speculated that in the future we would use a basket of currencies as our every day currencies I pushed back because I felt that gold was the answer to future currencies. But after I saw that bitcoin hit dollar parity I downloaded the wallet. It had a button you could click to start mining so I tried to mine. It crashed my computer so I was like...screw Bitcoin, this thing sucks. And went on with my life.

Then I read about the jump from $2 to $32 and I decided it was time to get in. When it came back down to $17 I cashed out my Roth IRA and bought $10k worth (as it spent 2 years slowly falling down to $2). I sold it all when it came back up to $12.

Dr Paul.. now that was the most solid candidate for POTUS I've ever seen in my lifetime. +merit and kudos to that.

Interesting to see Dr Paul's opinion on bitcoin now.
But I clearly remember back in the days most of my libertarian mates weren't that enthusiast on bitcoin because it's "backed by nothing!". How silly of me to listen to them, feeling like FML when I look back and think about the difference it could have made to my life.

Somewhere in here in 2008, I can't find a way to search the site it's been changed so much.

https://web.archive.org/web/20080802210827/http://www.overclock.net:80/overclock-net-folding-home-team/

Too much wasted time, done searching. Smiley

Yeah, I think a fair number of us got into it from folding, which is cool because a lot of the new rich elite are going to be fundamentally altruistic people.

Of course, along with the gamblers and drugs enthusiasts...nothing wrong with that, mind you.

What move up Eddie?
Looking at the hourly chart in retrospect, I see a very tall wicker on a red candle. It almost touched 5700 (bitmex). It happened ~8 hours ago.

Tall wicker candle not a good sign for a rise in price, indicates indecision and likely downturn.

That may be true but it might even go lower pass 4k before the end of the month with the hacking incident every now and then,
