@ Citronik - Yes electronics in the UK have had a hike in price since the Brexit vote, pound against the dollar and all that ... So often a dollar price is about the same as a pound price, I swear all they do is change the $ sign to a £  Angry  (300 was for the Biostar board, ram and processor).

Phil, thanks for the links ... and they lead to co.uk. site as well !  I have an SSD and Win10 licences spare so that's covered.

I'd looked at a few Gigabyte boards, but wasn't sure. All my RAM is DDR3 and LG1150 processors, so time to move on to newer tech.

As ever, really appreciate the suggestions, I'll take a look ... just got an email to say the card will be here on Monday  Grin

The z270 and b250 do more cards then the z170.

I have 2.  New mobos both z270s. They are nice

Question for the ones who have experience in dual mining :

do you know which algo is the less streeing GPUs ? Pasc , Decred ?

Would give another try but with low setting for no Eth hashrate decreasing, probably small dual hashrate, and if possible low risk for GPUs ...

I had one who died after a dual mining with decred at dcri 40. (modded sapphire rx470). I would like to lower the risk. Maybe decreasing power limit too ?

Any body knows why my current effective hashrate has been almost always (by a considerable amount) than my reported hashrate? The miner isn't showing errors for any of tge gpus and they're both getting shares right

What % difference for you? 5-15% is normal for me. maybe try increasing power limit on your gpus to 10-15%

Well it used to be a little up and a little down so i didn't care but for the past 48 hours it has been a steady 20-40% less than the reported hash rate

Same issue here, more than 10% missing.
I don't think this is normal, but never found the cause.

IMHO, the stress level and eventual death of a GPU will likely be too much heat / bad fan / not enough fan rpms.... or/and pushing your card too hard with a underpowered PSU.

I have my RX480s undervolted with custom rom but fanmin 75% and fanmax 100% fan at friendly 1100/2100, smOS powerstage 1 -- it can dual mine nicely with ethpool and Nicehash-Decred using Claymore 9 -- not very fast (28MHs) but still consistent performer. It has been "abused" like that for at least 9 months 24x7 until I was mining more ZEC or XMR since end last year. No RX480 has died yet from the torture because the fans are running hard. Some say not good to have fans at 100%.... but its better to have had replaced a busted fan than a dead GPU.

I have switched to ZEC from ETH because of the Z-Classic fork coming soon in May, and usually when this happens there will be a frenzy of crazy rentals at NH, just like what happened with Z Classic & Komodo.

Equihash algo will be gentle on the GPUs, lower than ETH for sure.

If you want even lower..... do XMR however profitability is lower than ZEC or ETH.

I am convinced that this... perhaps.... is a pool issue.... thats why I am mostly selling hash at NH because I have lost faith in mining pools - maybe exception of ethpool, ethermine but the rest are "unreliable". Since BTC is on a high now, I want BTC as fast a possible so going to Nicehash makes sense and get BTC upfront.

When I dual mine, I just reduce the voltage and clock. That is more efficient and stress the GPU less.

I know this is a very general question with many variables but how long is it taking you guys to ROI  for a $2500-$3000 GPU rig mining the hottest coin is at the time

I know this is a very general question with many variables but how long is it taking you guys to ROI  for a $2500-$3000 GPU rig mining the hottest coin is at the time

Well since I am capped at 11-13 rigs.

What I do is mine until I earn back everything except the cards.

So if I am at the point of 13 free rigs and say 40-50 cards.

I then check my income for those cards.  Let's say it is 90 a day after power. In ten days that is 900 profit which is about the price of 5 rx 470s. Or the price of four rx 480s.

This means I run a sale. On this site.  Of the  5 rx 470s or the four rx 480's

Since they are fully roi everything I get for them is profit.

I then keep my card at say 40 vs 45.

Next step is upgrade to rx 480 8gb.
Did that.
Then sold the pandaminer my profit on the b1 panda was 185.
I used those funds to get 3 Nvidia cards the net cost of the Nvidia was 1760
The panda sale  put 2060 in hand so I put that on the side and used a six month time to pay for the Nvidia.
A huge amount of my model is selling gpus here on site.

So I don't roi a rig the normal way.

My method works as long as there is not a huge crash.
Also I am forced to shrink in house mining by June 1 when summer rates hit.

My peak this winter was 48 cards 13 rigs and the panda miner.
I am now at 10 rigs with 22 cards and two empty mobos.

Everything is paid in full except the 3 Nvidia.

So 18 rx 480 8 gb paid off
1 rx 460 slim paid off
1 Aorus z270 with  i5 Intel 7400 and Evga 750 p2 paid off
1 gigabyte z280 with i5 Intel 7400 and Evga 750 p2 paid off
7 biostar z170s with i5 Intel 6400 t. And various plats and tits all paid off.
1 little asrock itx rig paid off

To be fair I grabbed 3 small form pcs did not need them they are not paid back.
Say 500 off.

So I would say I have 7500 in pc/gpu gear if I list it in the market place
And I am about 2200 in the hole for it,
What is nice is I am earning 35-40 a day after power cost so by June 1 I may be at 400 in the hole on 7500 worth of gear.
This translates to group roi on pc/gpu mining since April last year.

What is nice is the gpus are all less then three months old.
They are 18 rx 480 8 go
1 rx 460 gb
And the two 1080ti a week old
The one 1080 a week old.
It is a bit harder to track a rig roi
But as my gpu mining for the last year I have done well.

@citronick

I am curious to hear your investors strategy

I typically hold all my coins earned, pay for everything in fiat, and resell old gear to buy new gear to grow my hash power. However, thinking of investing my coins into new gear if ROI is fairly quick which will allow a larger growth in hash power

I am a retiree ... me and a few retired buddies decided to invest in BTC and ETH mining and trading in 2015.

Our main strategies : BUILD-OWN-OPERATE small mining farms with our joint investment, trading coins, learn about Bitcoin/blockchain/alts/etc. and basically keep us busy.

As the funds required for this project is basically a big portion of our retirement savings - our wives werent too thrilled about the project  Grin So..... the mining operations has a strict target ROI within 24 months. After 14 months, we are halfway there.

My group has 2PH of BTC farm, 3.6Ghs-ETH/50Khs-ZEC/110Khs-XMR of GPU farm, 25Ghs X11 farm and 1.68Ghs Scrypt farm. The 2PH farm (108 x S9s and 120 x A721s), 6 x A4s Innosilicon Scrypt Asics are hosted in Canada - powered by hydroelectricity. The rest hosted locally near my house in a secured leased warehouse.

GPUs are 480s, R9-Nanos and 390s. We have no intention to sell and get newer cards because the GPUs are fairly still up to date and capable to perform to near maximum hash and stable.

50%-60% of our proceeds are converted to cash to pay back the investment. The rest are for recurrent expenses and hoarding BTC and ETH for Poloniex trading.

Due to good outlook for alts this year, my group has decided to setup a 2nd GPU farm (210 x RX470s in 3 phases)... currently in progress...

A word of advise, if you are investing alone try to build a small farm of about 10 rigs so that you achieve some economies of scale. Also watch out for your power bill and limit to what you can afford and stay on track on the profit margin.

If you can get a few buddies to co-invest... then you can explore larger farms and more diverse mining or trading. Explore Phil's smart strategy too.

Its good to be a miner this year!

Good luck to all of us this year and beyond.

3600$ invest will get you
15 -470 4gb
3-mobo/ram/cpu/usb
3-1k gold psu

eth being the most profitable
its 380Mhs which is around 800$ a month before power
with my power rates its .13/KwH so lets say you are using 9amps at 220v thats 1980watt or 1.98KwH
so around 190$ a month in power
so profit would be 610$ a month
20$ a day so 180 days later you are ROI
this is hard numbers on how it will go down for you
but right now with the market it looks something like this

As I see a super coin as the super highway and alt coins as taxis and trucks needed to move transactions. ~philipma1957

Phil,

I'm curious about the ASUS cards.... ever since I bought my last one;  I will never buy an ASUS card again until they redesign their coolers....

Is the cooler held on simply by the 4 spring loaded screws and no other point?  I.E.  can you physically separate the cooler from the die without removing any screws? (lose contact, needing re-paste directly afterwards)

I had an issue with a machine where a cable pushed against a cooler and lifted it from the die rather easily;  80*C+ instantly and throttling....    I am very lucky I didn't damage my ASIC or anything when it happened;  and that I noticed right away (instant fan speed to 100%).

Sorry for a skew, but im curious if they are still using their crap design.   At least with the EVGA, the cooler housing is supported on the rest of the card;  not just the 4 screws with springs at the 4 corners of the GPU die.... and this is never ever a potential problem.

Link to my batch and script resources here.

A lot of gpus only use the four screws.
I will give it a look on Monday .

It is a big cooler would be better to have  more then 4 screws.

My 2c...sometimes it is not even that important to have the most recent card.
One can buy Asus R9 380 4gb for $100 quite easily and it does at least 20Mh/s in eth or $43/mo, currently.
Even with $8-10 electricity, the card if free in 3 mo, much faster than RX 480 in eth or 1080 in zec. Granted, you can get more total hash with better cards, but also more initial outlay.

My game plan is to mine until eth goes POS, then stake with 30% of the coins. A good excuse to buy a nice computer.

ETH will switch to PoS Shocked ? When will it happen ? I can tell you that the day it will happen, GPU mining will be dead, as you will have plenty of GPUs switching to other altcoins and that will hammer to death any profitability on those.
