So Bismuth is an interesting coin, just wondering if you considered just solo mining. Even with 4 1080ti, quick calculation means you'll get a block a day on average ? (someone correct me). A block a day is my threshold for solo mining/pool mining, but thats just me. I see considerable improvement when solo mining (fast block coins) vs pool, but I do have top notch internet.

@Phil to your solar idea, i think most time you would "only" get 90% of your max solar watt/panel. And if it drops because of the short? cloud it always fall down, and miner stops hard. Doesn't cool down, could be much cycles/day. Isn't it there where you are, you could get the same rate for solar, as from the grid? Even if only in short times of clouding, you could get lets say 30-60% power from solar, and the rest from grid. And after sun is down, stop mining. Or is it to much expensiver if grid is avaible? How long miners need for startup?
You can always incorporate a small battery pack for a bit of "ride through" capability; it's not like there are only two choices in solar: no battery or a massive battery. One caveat is that a small battery - say, under 1-2 kW-h of capacity - will need to be a lithium-ion type as they have much higher peak power output than lead-acid. Used battery modules from Chevy Volts, Nissan Leafs, Teslas, etc., are especially popular among the DIY solar crowd.

All good questions. There is a threshold for inverter. It has soft start and power off. This idea only works if inverter does as promised. Still waiting for it to test it. Putting a l3+ or two should not be much of an issue in terms of losing the gear. As they don’t earn much

Phil, I had one of the 3 MSI 1070 Sea Hawk X cards I got from you die on me almost 2 months ago. Some sort of short that prevent the rig from powering back in. Once I removed the failed card, all was well with the rig again. Opened RMA with MSI and it took 6 weeks before I got the replacement. It worked for about 2 hours, then started overheating. It didn't even come with the fan for the radiator. Raised a stink with MSI and they said they didn't have another 1070 Sea Hawk they could send me, and that I would have to wait until one came in. Was able to convince them to send me a 1080 Sea Hawk instead. Got it 3 days later and it too overheated as soon as I started mining with it. Turns out this 2nd one had a concave mounting plate that kept the cool plate (copper part) from making contact with the GPU. Once I fixed it, it was good to go. The 1070 did have a failed pump, but just picked up a Corsair H55 and swapped the parts I needed to get it going again. MSI is going to charge me $350 if I don't return the 1070, but I figured I'll just keep it since that's still a good deal for a 1070 Sea Hawk. And of course I'm keeping the 1080 as well. I also had a EVGA 1070 air card fail. Their process is so much better than MSI. Sent them the failed card and had a replacement back within a week. And it was a brand new card one model newer than what had failed. Compare that to a 6 week turnaround with MSI, and you get a beaten up used card back that might not work. Needles to say, I'm going to focus on EVGA cards going forward...

. . . .
The game today as we mine is cheap power is king and lots of cheap gear can be found how do we cope as miners.
As I have time and time again emphasized, whatever you mine, ie profits, is determined by your ability to manage power cost, therefore the ultimate game will be cheapest source of power in the world and where (location)... My group's mining operations lifeline is entirely dependent on cheap hydro-power in Labrador. I am working on a geo-thermal power project currently, and i hope I can give more info on this soon. Phil's solar power project is also a very good strategy to circumvent the power cost eating into your mining profits. As far as GPUs vs ASICS vs FGPAs, ultimately its all about diversity and advancement in tech -- thats why we are all in the mining business. Let's keep Phil's thread civil -- its an important resource for all of us to share info, not bashing ground. All tech has their merits, pros-cons etc. Speaking of diversity, curious as to people's thoughts about Mineority, which is open for registration and plan purchases (you own the GPU, you are not just paying for hash power). On the hardware side, their prices seem fair but not something that I would want to jump at. Still, much easier than trying to do 4U builds on your own. I like their RX 570 with custom passive cooling; perfect for 3U/4U builds. Not ready to buy 20 at that price, however, but it is reasonable. The biggest plus to their proposal is that you get automatic access to their optimizations if you host with them, and I suspect that they have some nice ones for Vega. Worth it? Not worth it? Thoughts? Am I missing something here? The Titan V costs $3000, but they are selling it for $2600 and including 3 years of free hosting?!

Yes a small battery could be a option. 1000watt / 48V =20,83A 36V 27,77A or 24V 41,66A With actual battery technic possible, 100x NCR18650PF(3.7V 2.9A) 10s10p give 37V and 29A 1,073kwh, so you would discharge under 1C. But the question is, how much cycles/day you would get, and how long you would puffer till shutdown. Con the inverter costs extra, and also the battery charger maybe balancer. There are few diy power walls @Phil to your solar idea, i think most time you would "only" get 90% of your max solar watt/panel. The 1080tis have been flawless.
The Evga The msi The Corsair
All work for about 6 to 9 months set to 200 watts
That has been my experience as well. All my 1080Ti's, be it air, hybrid or water, have been mining @ 200 watts since the day I got them without a single issue. Re. the MSI 1070 Sea Hawk that failed, don't get me wrong, I pretty much ended up scoring a 1080 Sea Hawk for $400, so no complains on that front from me! Thanks for the link to the overstock/auction solar panels from SEP. ~$100 for a 230 watt panel is way better than the ~$190 I have been paying for 280/290 watt panels. Granted they are poly-crystalline panels vs. mono, but at that price, I'm not complaining. So you just keep an eye on that website and sometime you see deals on similar panels as low as $50 each? Looks like they have a warehouse in Indiana. How are their shipping rates? I typically buy 24 or 48 panels at a time to get close to a full pallet (or two). I also like to pick up shipments directly at the local terminal, which often saves me a little on shipping. Very tempted to bust out another 24 panel ground array. If I do, I'll go with just a single converter vs. micro inverters, to bring cost down even further. I can pick up a 5,000 Watt (output) SMA Sunny Buy for around $600 shipped, which works out to about $0.10 per Watt, or $25 per panel. Micro inverters typically run around $100 a pop. So right around $3,000 for a 5,520 Watt array before the cost of a 24 panel Ironridge ground mount kit (about $1,300 plus locally sources 3" iron pipe) and wiring (about $200 if you make your own). I'll check with SEP to see what their ground mount kits cost compared to what I've been paying Renvu.

You were sod out of luck if one (or more) of your GPUs was failing a couple of months ago. All you'd get as RMA were bottom of the barrel cards (some might actually have been failed cards that the resellers tried to flog back to you as replacement again). Out of 25 GPUs I bought in early 2017, one of them was faulty (got it refunded and bought a new one within a day). My friend built three rigs in Dec and Jan when the GPU market was dry. 4, possibly even 5 GPUs were DOA (or failed within a week).

NJ had a lot of incentive plans for installers and when some installers go out of business they have these auctions of new old stock. The link I gave is a guy that buys at auction and sells at very good prices. To get the prices like 50 bucks for that panel you would be looking at a purchase of 1000plus panels at auction.

There are few diy power walls 1 KW from a 4-battery series connect of car-type or standard lead-acid deep cycle batteries is a fairly low load - car batteries in particular are rated for "reserve capacity" in minutes at a 25 amp draw. It would also be not bad for a 2-battery series setup at 24 amps, well within the rated capacity of the batteries though you might see a small reduction in the "rated" amp-hour capacity. Not even close to the typical 500 VA UPS that runs from a single 12V 7AH gel cell (and DOES show a massive reduction in battery capacity due to the very heavy draw).

Yeah, a 48V pack comprised of 4 automotive SLI batteries in series is a reasonable solution, especially if only a few minutes of operation per day on average is required (that Peukert effect is a real bitch, and shows up even at 0.25C draw). Again, this is just for providing a bit of tolerance to the occasional passing cloud or, perhaps, thunderstorm; not to continue mining all night long.

yeah we got the inverter and it has issues so off to a bad start. it is not like buysolar cant do different products but this one has a lot of nice whistles and bells. waiting for a rma as it was doa. we may go with a battery to smooth over voltage drops. dog house with 2 l3+ 2 psu's and miners on top of old metal box that could act to hold battery dog house is water proof and cheap
