I saw this on Twitter and was wondering if anyone could help me understand?

"For everybody holding #Darkcoin - Google 'Sybil Attack'"

I don't have the technical background to understand a Sybil Attack. Could someone explain this to me and if it negatively impacts DarkCoin's future at all? Might end up being nothing but I would like to know.

Basically a Sybil Attack is an attack on peer-to-Peer network in which the attacker uses multiple nodes to establish that they are "trustworthy" and then proceeds to use that node "trust" to influence the network in some way. The type of influence depends on what type of network it is that is being attacked - it might be just disruption, injection of bad data , or capturing other user and/or node information.

The name Sybil refers to the girl with multiple personalities.

I'm not sure how this would affect the Darkcoin network, except that a 51% attack is somewhat the same principle.

Thanks. So this isn't anything specific against Darkcoin, this can theoretically attack any coin? I'm not worried about it then.

I think he is referring to potential puppet nodes that may handle DarkSend transactions in order to "map" the network and what goes where. The 51% issue affects pretty much every bitcoin-based crypto.

What if I leave my DRK in a really old wallet version, will I lose my DRK after wallet update? If so, that would be very disconcerning as it means that I will have to keep checking threads like these to make sure I update in time. I have about 10k DRK sitting in a 1 month old wallet. Will my dark remain safe in there forever? Does anyone know?

Believe it or not, I just visited the thread to find out the exact same thing!!! I have a few in an exchange and I was worried to withdraw to an (maybe) older version of wallet..

as long as you backup your wallet.dat you will be fine, the amount of coins your public address have is recorded in the blockchain (which every user running the synced client have a copy of), and the private key to prove that said public address is yours is stored in your wallet file.

I like Dark coin. It is in btc38 anyway.

Honestly I don't know, didn't want to reply on twitter since I wasn't sure. I know it's pretty big, they're third for Doge for example. The exciting thing is that it's a new part of the world.

Is that screencap just showing the database of cryptos, including those that can be submitted as applications to go on the exchange?

I also see MyriadCoin in that screencap....I will giggle like a schoolgirl if Myriad is also added.

Either method will yield the same amount of coins.

Not as exciting as btc38, but it looks like another new DRK exchange: https://bleutrade.com/ trading with BTC, LTC and DOGE.

More likely, it's about whether or not a Sybil attack can be used to take control of darksend transactions. Last time someone asked Evan about the master node controlling the darksend transaction, he answered that a slave node would also sign the darksend transaction. But the two are just varying degrees of the same attack, so that was not a true answer to the question.
