Why is the network hash rate going up and down so often by almost 25% within a few hours?
Probably nicehash.

Can you explain it a bit in more detail for a newbie? How is NiceHash influencing the nethash? Are people jumping from coin to coin?

They sell bulk hashing power, somebody probably bought a large amount of cryptonight and pointed it at XMR for a short time.

Trying to install new wallet GUI..and not sure how backup my old wallet. There is no wallet.dat file. Any help plz? Running windows 64 bit. Thx You can either restore the wallet with the .keys file + its password or the 25 word mnemonic seed. Note that, on Windows, you can find the .keys file in Documents\Monero. Thx dEBRUYNE...I understand now.

I haven't looked at the details here but that can happen if the prices fluctuate rapidly. Secondly the network hash rate isn't directly measurable. There are only ways of estimating it but they can introduce large errors.

I have a problem here -- I tried to send a large amount of Monero from my GUI wallet to Bittrex. The Monero never arrived and I see that the GUI wallet still has "Block height: PENDING" after 6 hours.
So, following advice I found via Google, I deleted all my wallet files except the .keys file and reopened the wallet. As expected, it scanned the blockchain (doesn't take nearly as long as with the prior version, is this expected?). Voila, all my Monero are back in the wallet and the pending transaction isn't there.
So I tried to resend the transaction to Bittrex and the transaction fails with the error message "double spend".
Any idea what is going on here? Thanks!

Probably your previous failed transaction is still sitting in your daemon's tx pool which causes the daemon to think you're trying to double spend your coins. Do "flush_txpool" in monerod and try again, now the "double spend" error should go away.

Wall observer ....possibly gaining some exposure because these folks learn that you have coins and also might learn too much about your personal details and your possible bitcoin hodlings, and gosh we likely have to take additional precautions regarding how much we expose ourselves and our coins.. and even if it might be inconvenient to NOT store too many coins in such a way such as on local bitcoins or some of the wallets that we might use in our trading?
Hmm if only there was something a little bit more private and flexible etc. Ah well, now that you ask, there is. If you point your browser over here , https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1905086.0 ,you will find something that is a bit more private and, well maybe not flexible, but more private at least - or so they say.

Why is the network hash rate going up and down so often by almost 25% within a few hours?
It is run by some bot. Some office turn off the servers in the night.

Why are people not noting if their PCs are abused for mining monero by a bot? It causes CPU load, heat, noise and stuff like that.

Monero is down a lot and I'm finally thinking of buying. The big jump in ether we will probably see an increasing interest in altcoins in general by the end of the month when bitcoingold drops. I really wish I had gotten into Monero before it huge move up. It's hard to manage crypto pricing because the underlying assets don't have a fundamental value...

Should I have on my tin foil hat? Producing cryptographic keys generally is cpu intensive. You should have had that on a few cpu generations back. Backdoors abound in all sorts of hardware. If that is the case than cryptocurrencies will provide the greatest bug bounties ever for that sort of thing. Seems like they wont last long in a world where cryptocurrencies have gone even semi mainstream. Bonus value. As soon as they allowed CPU's to be changed (updated/patched official reason :: also true lately) you add vectors of attack (I.E. vulnerabilities) not to mention there is management software that can code chips remotely. This is one reason nation states are supporting their own cpu development programs.
