This I know already. But why is it safer than solo mining for example?

For an attack on Fantomcoin all other coins from their blockchains are needed to be attacked too, not only FCN. That increases the security of FCN in hundreds of times

The number of commits to the source code doesn't reveal any hard work though (compared to the number of commits in Monero or Boolberry) Smiley

https://github.com/amphibia/fantomcoin/commits/master

is Fantomcoin abandoned by the developer?

Have you ever wondered what if regular updates is an indication of coins imperfection? If the coin is already awesome, frequent changes are not needed.

Fantomcoin forked off the same Bytecoin code as other CN coins, I can't imagine it's so perfect it doesn't need fixes applied to it just like other CN coins apply them Smiley
