ANTMINER S3+ Discussion and Support Thread

Doesn't make sense in a push/pull config to have one fan running at a different speed than the other.

It does have sense, but I'm not good enough in english to explain.
1/ Cold air and warm air don't use same space because of it's thermal expansion.
2/ the S3 is not full close, air can flow outside by many ways, not only by the pull fan.

Because of those two points, input air flow may be different from output air flow.

Positive air pressure inside the case reduces the rate at which dust accumulates on the internal components. Not prevent it, but slow it down and prevent other holes ( ie. the PCI-e connector thru hole) from allowing more dirt in.

both valid points.  I usually build my computer rigs with positive pressure inside the case to help put the dust just at the points where the fan inputs in the case (have dust filters) to reduce the amount of dust buildup within the case.  This way the dust doesn't enter the case at cracks/vents.

I received my order of two antminers S3 yesterday. One of them just plain dead. This morning gave it a few rounds of on-off-on, the red LED then lit up, but nothing else. Frustrated, i pulled the power connector off one blade, and the bloody thing came to life!! I could configure it and all. Then I tried again with both blades connected, it went dead. So what is it? Faulty blades? Or controller issue? How do I claim warranty?

I'm in Malaysia.

Ouch, you may have a broken off parts from the hashing PCB may be...

If you could, could you unscrew the top case and see what is fallen off from the PCB?

Are you sure he's an "HVAC guy"?

1 watt is approximately 3.41214 BTU/h

1 S3 is approximately 1200 BTU/h

My Batch 11 S3+ Miners are a bit louder then my Batch 9 Miners.   Anyone have suggestions for better fans that are quieter that I can replace the originally shipped ones with?

Same question here, I have an S3+ as well and its loud, just started mining on it tonight

no reason the fans should be that noisy, at default settings my temps are between 35 - 38c on both boards (after running for 2 or 3 hours)

another thing I noticed is the stock fan frames are really thick as well so I dunno if the long screws will be an issue with smaller frame fans or not? will it hit the heatsink or one of the mining boards if they stuck into the case more?

edit: nevermind this answered my question, plenty of room around the screw holes, it won't hit anything

You still haven't told me how to figure out how to determine which one of my temp sensors is jacked up... and no switching boards has NOT helped. At this point i'm about to just send you the one that throws errors and can't handle being overclocked. When i test them individually one side starts at 0 and the other at 16, but both warm up to the normal range (normal for one fan being controlled and the outer cover removed)

Anybody else have issues with a single side's temp sensor reading way off? like 13-16 degrees when all my others are 35-39... occasionally it'll get a real wild hair up its backside and read the bad side at 200+ degrees and will send fans to 4000 rpm. hashing remains relatively unaffected unless erroneous temp sensor sends it into thermal protection shutdown, which is very rare and mainly after a restart. Any assistance would be great

If it's underperforming, it's probably batch 1.

If it says "S3+" on it, then it's a S3+.

Otherwise, I'm not sure there's a way to find out.

S3 is frequency 218.75 (440 GH/s)

S3+ is frequency 225 (453 GH/s)

If you can get 500GH/s.  then it is a good miner, no difference S3 or S3+

From My 37  S3 only 11 working at Frequency  250 and going 500GH/s.   22 of these are S3+ and 15 of them  are S3 batch 4 and 6

The only number you should be interested in from the above is the HW and I can tell you, on the face of it, it is BRILLIANT!
What is your GH/S(avg) number? If between 450 & 500 or above then I can fully qualify your HW number's brilliance.
Also, what frequency are you running at?

I can't overclock, cause my PSU has 2 x 6 pin per PCI-e cable, I read its recommeded to have dedicated cables (1 plug per cable) so they don't overheat when overclocking

Nonsense! You can overclock with just 2 PCI-e connections. I have an S1 to S3 upgrade that I am running off 2 PCI-e connectors (one for each blade) and have it overclocked to freq 268.5 giving ~540GH/s.

Also, look at the thread in my signature where I overclocked an S3 (not an S3+ !) to freq 262 giving ~519GH/s with a single PCI-e connector for each blade.

Generally, so long as your PSU has the amperage in each line that the PCI-e connector feeds off, then you can use just one connector AND overclock.

No Thank you I don't want my cables to burn up, thier is a reason that S3 miners have 4 x 6 pin PCI-E its safer to use all 4 (1 cable per plug) for overclocking.
