As promised earlier, my current rigs.  Just added the third one so it's not perfectly lined up with the other two.  I have a fourth larger rig that doubles as my web server in a different room.

I stuck with HAF 922s because for $80 they have solid resale value for gamers, tons of room inside to do any crazy stuff I want later.  I have one more to add to this cluster next week, and possibly 2 more after that by the end of the month.

HAF in reality is not high airflow, but half passable and not noisy airflow

They can be made to have very good airflow.  The first thing to do is get rid of the 3.5" drive cage.  You can then put a pair of 120 X 38 mm high-flow fans in the front, and they will dump a ton of cool air directly on the GPUs.  Also, the PSU is drawing cool air from underneath the case, which helps to extend its life dramatically compared to top-mount designs.  However, the CM 690 II is actually Cooler Master's best case in terms of airflow.

i dd the image to the next hdd after the first one. Hardware configuration 30min. software configuration setup is 5 min.

1.7 - 2.1 gh/s, an individual GPU fluctuates from 290-310 mh/s

Just curious, how does that case hold up as far as temps on those 5870's? I've been considering it as my new Gaming PC case.

I buy second-hand mobos and cases from FreeGeek and outfit with new PSUs and second-hand (Craigslist) GPUs.

Current total hashing rate is 2.9G. Total cost so far ~CAD$2K.

Just curious, how does that case hold up as far as temps on those 5870's? I've been considering it as my new Gaming PC case.

66 and 78C respectively under full load, at 990 core/344 mem. Antec says you're supposed to direct all fans inward to create positive air pressure and force the heat out through the mesh. I'm planning on adding a couple more fans on the top, that point out, since most of the heat seems to be exiting there. The front of the case has nothing but a 2.5" ssd on the floor, so it's significantly cooler than the rest of the box. It might be that if I force air down from the top, the hot air will go to the front of the case. I'll be experimenting over the next few days.

Looking at that picture I suddenly had this urgent need to make sure I had no loose papers on my desk in case they suddenly caught fire.  Then I considered the secondary use of all that heat and how it could be turned into a pizza oven (I'm hungry ).

Oh yeah it is a pretty decent space heater, let me tell you. This is an older picture; the temp of the middle card gets way too high. I have them spaced out more now. That mobo has 5 pcie slots, so it can fit 3 of those 5970s more spaced out than in the picture I posted. You cannot keep this rig in a room with the door closed as it will turn that room into a sauna.

Aha! But here the power of the neocortex shall come in handy! I shall put the miners in a different room and I shall run a heating vent flexible tube all the way to the sauna. OK, /me is silly.

This thread is so awesome! A bunch of guys in their garages are making history and leaving world's top 500 supercomputers in the dust....

It's certainly an eye opener.  I've been charting out estimated difficulty jumps, BTC exchange rates, and mHash/watt vs mHash/$ investment even more lately.  If I expand much more I'm going to have to create additional circuits in my house to avoid tripping breakers.

I'm also working with some friends who have experience with growing marijuana to work on creating a more cost effective ventilation system to force the heat through my attic and then out of the house, rather than relying (mostly) on air conditioning.

I think that the level of accessibility makes this project neat.  I can have a 2 year old rig push very little mining collectively or I can choose to invest in a very modern and very gpu intensive setup that will make me a somewhat competitive miner.  What you may have already versus an entirely new project.  Start with a little or a lot.

My rig stays in the cool confines of a Florida air conditioned home. Put it in the garage and it will melt through the earth's surface and cause China syndrome.
