Darn thing is loud as heck - I may underclock it and reduce fan speed to get noise down a little bit.

I've reduced my fan speed to about 50%.  I had to get rid of that darn high pitch whining! Wife's orders.  I have mine in my basement, and I could hear it upstairs, and so could she.  The temp sensor said it went up a few degrees, but I just cracked opened the window all winter and let in some cold air.  Now that it is spring (more or less),  I have under clocked mine to keep the temperature down to where I'm comfortable.

Hey Guys, i'm kinda new to the game here. I've been playing around with 4 s7's for a couple weeks now. I own an IT company with our own data center so we are kind of running an experiment with these 4 to learn more about pools with multiple machines, how to manage multiple machines etc.

I've read about why to use kano vs antmine and I fully support that. but as we build a business plan to invest in hardware etc to go big ~150 machines. The problem i've had so far, and keep in mind this is over the last 2-3 weeks.... I get better results with antmine.

With my 4 boxes I can do a steady and predictable 0.1btc with my 4 miners. On here the last few days i'm lucky if i'm getting 0.05.

Am I missing something?

Another question I have is with a machine that finds a block. Does that user get a larger reward or what happens?

I'm aware of the halving, we're working to build experience and knowledge so we can make a very good educated decision on how to move forward after the halving and the potential new hardware.

Kano, we're in canada also and own two smaller data centers, we should chat about a canadian node?

Thanks in advance!

I was mining at Anthole for over a year and then switched to Kano to compare earnings. You need to run these earnings comparisons over an extended time like Phil mentioned. At the end of the day, investing in bitcoin long term and mining at Antpool are two polar opposite schools of thought. IMO Bitcoins survival depends on a strong, ethical community and with so many companies in the space making decisions based on profit and not community...we are no better off than we were with central bank fiat paper money. Mine on a small pool and as Kano said, we need to stop buying Bitmain gear. Vote with our dollars and force these bad actors to conform to what is right or we make them irrelevant.
I wish I did more research before buying my S7 - I didn't realize what a greedy company they were, mining empty blocks and all. Now I wish I had an Avalon 6 instead. Well, it least I won't mine there.
well  in a way you spilt the baby  or did a 50-50  move as long as you mine it here.

I can argue for kano.is  or against antpool/bitmaintech   as to what is better for bitcoin, but   a simple fact is a 50-50 spilt  1/2 kano.is  and half antpool/bitmaintech   means you would be at least ½ right  no matter which one is the good guy or the bad guy

you would get to be ½ correct  that is pretty good deal for anyone on the fence as to what to do.  do both and compare if it is pool choice.  or in your case buy the s-7 and mine it here.

My choice was to drift towards kano.is   and away from bitmaintech.

I mine here I have 6 avalon 6s and only 1 s-7.   so I am more like 85-15 in the kano.is camp vs the antpool/bitmaintech camp.

I no longer buy from bitmaintech for myself, but if a client wants the s-7 I will buy it for him.

The reality is complete separation from antpool/bitmaintech is hard to do.

although If I load up on some bitfury gear from sidehack it will be a lot easier to not use bitmaintech.

I can tell you one reason why i bought the s7 was because they made it easy. And the easiest part being new to the game was they sold the power supply. I looked at the avalon and while I was new and trying to figure out who was a legit place to buy from, bitmain made it easy.

As I learn more, I may not go that route in the future, but like I said, right now i;m keeping my pool small so I can learn before I go big.

We own an IT company, so this kind of falls right in our laps, we have staff with free cycles that can help manage and maintain, so my costs are very low compared to others. As long as we do it right we could do well!

Buying from Bitmain is easy when paying with bitcoin through their website while Paying via any other method is next to impossible. Any sort of customer support is virtually nonexistent so once you have an issue, you will learn like many here have already that Bitmain will not be very helpful. It would have been a smart PR move on Bitmain's part to do an S7 giveaway with this pool or be more active within this community. My next miner will be an Avalon mostly because they supported this pool with the contest plus everyone talks highly of the quality

I sold my Avalon 6 at a loss. I do not mine inside my house, I mine in my garage and at hosting sites so noise isn't an issue. A6 stopped mining when my ambient temp went a little over 90F but all of my S7s and Titan kept hashing. A6 was pulling more power than S7 for hash rate it was providing, and it was no where near per Avalon's specification. I did have to contact Bitmain for a replacement board for an early Batch 1 out  of 20 or so S7s purchased. Bitmain replaced the board and even paid for shipping both ways. So, I will probably keep buying Bitmain products until someone has a cheaper and more efficient miner for sale.

The lack support is why I moved to the Avalon 6s .  Block_c and kilo17 have worked with me
To do 3 group buys I sold about about 51 machines . I also purchased 5 more so I think 56 is the total so far.

I killed one with over volt and running it in a hot garage.

All others are good.
I got good fast support from YAN OF Block_C he answers my emails and my phone calls the same or next day.
And when I killed off one blade he sent me a replacement blade at a slight discount.

So I will pick them over bitmaintech.

I am waiting since sept 30th for compensation on my batch 1 s-7 as it was a dog.
And since that dog under preformed more then ten percent it was about 150 USD.

I ORDERED 17 s-7's after that for some clients.  I asked for a discount for each purchase to make up for the bad batch 1. They never offer me a special coupon for the newer purchases.
So for they have earned.my disgust.

I never got any response form Btimain regarding my S7 needing one blade replaced, so go EFF them.  They also never compensated me with the batch1 BS they pulled last year. They ignore tickets and can burn for all I care.. Ohh yeah also, they are the reason Bitcoin mining profitability has dropped 70% since Oct/Nov of last year.

So, I mentioned last week I was gonna sell my S7 on eBay bc my elec costs are too high (still making couple bucks/day but worried about the upcoming having). I was hoping to get $700 (less the eBay & PayPal fees), so I'm happy it sold yesterday for $825. (Waiting for payment, so jury is still out on how this is gonna end - it's a longtime buyer with good reviews, so I'm hopeful).

I'm still mining here (my miner is johnboy21) until I get paid, so here's hoping we can break this logjam before I disconnect. Gonna go make a chicken omelate for breakfast  Wink

Well, guess what? I'm still here mining on Kano bc the butthead who won the eBay bid failed to pay.  Angry
This is the second time in 2 weeks this has happened. I'm starting to think this is a sign from above that I should not sell and I should just hang in and keep mining.

What say you, fellas (and gals?) - with apologies to The Clash, "Should I stay or should I sell?"  Smiley

he probably figured out he can buy a new one cheaper.. but yes, if you make money even if its 1$ its worth keeping it plugged in.
after the halving, you might have to re-evaluate but you still have a few months.
Thanks for the input. I'm making about $3/day (down from $4 a month ago). Problem is, I think the S7 is depreciating more than $3/day, so it's a crap shoot. Darn thing is loud as heck - I may underclock it and reduce fan speed to get noise down a little bit. I'll think on it. If I decide to sell again, I'll offer it here bc eBay seems to be too risky and I'd rather sell it to a Kano miner.

What batch is your S7 from? If it's 7 or below, I will take it off of your hand but probably won't pay more than new. Let me know.

Haha, they do ignore tickets. I got some that are 2 months old.  But all the hating asides, there's always 2 side to every story.  I'm no fan of Bitmain either but my partners and I have bought hundreds of units from Bitmain without issues both via BTC and wire transfers.  Delivery time is always 2 days via air, never failed to all 3 of our different city locations in the US.  The only times you will have issues with wire transfer is if you have to deal with incompetent bankers, sometimes that includes the manager as they don't do international wires often. Their support do suck, no disagreement there and hence why I usually just ask the forum for help or we fix it ourselves.  Most of the time reboot is the cure.  The machine runs like tanks though as long as you don't move them around too much as their heat sink design is it's biggest flaws.  Out of the hundreds of units we have, we've had about 5 units with loose heat sink, some are dued to our staff's stupidity being too rough trying to bang it out after they're stuck when attached via the side rails.  I can comfortably say it can survive over 90 degree temperature much better than the Avalon 6 as we've done 3-4 weeks of heat stress test in my garage before deploying them into the larger farms.

I love my few Avalon 6s as they are very quiet.  Runs solid if you have the Block C image.  However the unit is designed to run better hot and even in cool to warm temp of 78F, the Unit will still run anywhere from 73-79C whereas the S7 would be operating at 60C or below.  This is why it's not a good idea to stack the Avalon 6, as 3 of it's side gets extremely hot.  There's only 1 FAN and it runs at lower RPM than the S7 fans, so with the lower noise, comes the cost of hotter operating temperatures which is part of their design.  The Avalon 6 batch 1 however can runs faster when overvolted, I did that and burn both hash boards killing 1 unit when doing stress test on the Ambient temperature.  It's code is designed to drop the hash rate once it hit 80C to cool it down, but when overvolted, maybe it didn't have sufficient time to react / cool down.

For home miners or people who's higher priority is noise level, winner is Avalon.   Running it as a business, you simply can't beat the S7 as it's  priced to kill off the competitions.  You definitely hear a lot more horror story about it then the Avalon 6 but that's only because the install base is much much larger so of course there will be more reports on issues.  My partners and I have hundreds of the S7s and they are still running strong without issues except for 2 units that have bad hash boards which Bitmain replaced but don't expect it to be fast!   The volume of orders speaks for themselves, originally I wanted to have 50% Avalon 6 and 50% S7 but the price drop by Bitmain made it impossible to not favor their products.  Doesn't matter if it's Bitmain, Bitfury, Spoondoolies, Avalon, etc, they all mine for profits too so they're also our worst competitor which makes this a very tough business for the long term.

Just "Mining" my own business.

Thank you very much !

Now given that the total pool hash has dropped a bit and that I added a 2nd S5 to my setup, I'm getting nicer rewards Cheesy

It's a batch 9. Took delivery on Jan 22. Never overclocked - running at stock 700 MHz. I seem to have gotten a pretty good one, though it's not the 162 chip version. Averages over 4700th w error rate of .0014 & .0015 over last 9 days. Temps are 49, 52, & 51 running in my base to (clean) w window cracked. We had a warm spell here in NJ last week and temps never went over 54. I certainly wouldn't expect you to pay more than new. You can pm me with offer. Thanks

Please don't bring the block size debate in here.  This is basically the only sane board in bitcoin, a breath of fresh air from all that noise.  There are plenty of other forums for that discussion.

Yeah this share checking is proving to be both successful ... and annoying.
I'd prefer to have no positive results ...
But it has been slowing down my payout processing a little, but nothing to worry about, there will be no more 'days' of delays, just sometimes a bit of a delay while I check through the various data I can generate.

Currently there are 29 accounts/addresses being held.
Many are tiny amounts due to the way I've managed to associate them even before the share statistics could give any useful results.

I very much doubt any belong to anyone who comments in here, so don't be thinking they might be anyone in here.
Anyway, they will already know coz the perpetrators clearly already knew they were withholding due to some of the changes they made on the 14th when I commented about it.

Also, the worst case scenario if I'm ever wrong, is that the account will simply have more 'dust' to be paid out ... one day.

I am curious...is the basic root cause of the problem simply bad hardware/firmware or is it something that could be seen as intentional?

There's 2 issues.
1) I can't tell what the hardware is, they use a proxy
2) It's almost certainly intentional since they've changed things around since I commented about it and they 'tried' to avoid being found.
Most of the accounts where created in Jan, then no changes for 1.5 months, then 11 switched to address accounts over the last 3 days.

It wont be a backdoor unless you leave your router wide open as well. Still, passwd doesnt work?
If you run them at home, yes.

If you run them in ANY data centre, all your Bitmain hardware is accessible and changeable by anyone else who has access to or has hardware in the same data centre.
They don't even need to login to it, they can just send API commands to it and it will accept ANY API command since they configure them to do that (even after years of me pointing out that they shouldn't)

You can set it up safely in a DC, my kit runs through a firewall that NAT's out to the internet in the datacentre. The miners are not on the datacentres network switch fabric directly. Not that I have S7's in my rack but even if they were they would be as safe as if they were in a DMZ at home.

Yeah but most people hosting are just sending equipment to a hosting provider and letting them do all of the work, that's where the problem comes in.  Its a bit different when you set it up yourself Smiley

Well I sent mine to a hosting provider, but I sent them the firewall and told them what to do Smiley
