1021  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need simple advice on bitcoin on: July 30, 2014, 07:12:35 AM
If you have done "quite a bit" of research then you should have realised that laptops are not useful for any mining.
And since $4 is about 0.068 BTC then 68000 days is as good a guess as any.

Omg really? didn't knew it was that hard to mine.

Well it didn't used to be hard to mine.  When Bitcoins were worth a few pennies each you could mine hundreds on a laptop and even then people tossed their wallets away because it wasn't worth the effort to try to sell 200BTC.

Since the price has multipled over 10000x the difficulty has increased 10000x to match.  Except now Bitcoin is even more popular so you can't even mine pennies on a laptop.
1022  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Where does a newbie start? on: July 30, 2014, 07:05:01 AM
Welcome to the world of Bitcoin.  Unfortunately you're about 1.5 years too late to mine Bitcoins with CPU or GPUs.  You could, but it would be like trying to eat a can of soup with a toothpick - an exercise in futility.

You need to buy ASICs made for Bitcoin to mine Bitcoin.  Most of them only make profit for the manufacturer so I would avoid mining unless you have some overwhelming urge to mine - then you can buy a cheap $50 Rockminer that does 35GH/s and understand the mining process.

I would focus more on learning about Bitcoin's economy and how to grow it - lots of room for wealth there.

It's that time of the month - yes the monthly saber rattling, or in this case nuke rattling, from DPRK.  Come back this time next month for some good mystery theater!
1024  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Opinion on the US on: July 30, 2014, 06:55:40 AM
As a citizen I can say that the government no longer represents the people.  The U.S has taken on the role of "big brother" in the world and now is expected to resolve problems everywhere when we do nothing for our own issues.  There is constant conflict both in and of itself and worldwide!  Non-stop fraud and criminal investigations from the top to the bottom and never any punishment!

I'll second this.  US citizen born and raised but I don't feel like the government has my best interests at the top of their agenda - I think their more interested in keeping personal power to live like little kings of their fiefdoms with the POTUS as emperor.

I mostly agree with you both, but I have to disagree on your representation of the president as being the "emperor" - as far as I can tell, he's mostly a puppet, with the real "emperors" being those that financed his campaign (by the way, I don't mean this just about the current president).

I would agree with you about Obama being a puppet before the 2nd election.  The way he works and acts now is too fluid and smooth to be the work of any puppet master.  That would be like saying Cheney was a puppet.  Was Cheney Bush's puppet master or was he himself a puppet?

I think Obama is Machiavellian - he knows what he wants and is personally trying to get it.  He will use anything he has to go get that.  Look at his talk from 2004 to 2008 - for a puppet that's a lot of 180s.
1025  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Anyone following the ebola outbreak? on: July 30, 2014, 06:35:41 AM
God forbid the virus mutates to become airborne.

Captain Trips and The Stand anyone?

While possible, that is not the worst thing.

Go forbid it develops a longer incubation period - you would lose all containment.
1026  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Mining Revenue Storage Procedures - Type of wallet to use? on: July 30, 2014, 06:22:44 AM
If you want to be able to be able to have a wallet and track all the funds coming into it but have it secured so nobody can send funds out, then use Armory's "watching only" wallet.  You make an offline copy on a backup machine (no paper needed) and transfer the key over to your main machine so you can watch it like on a real wallet but a hacked can never spend it.

1027  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Biostar BTC-24GH Bitcoin Miner Review on: July 30, 2014, 06:06:00 AM
At 5W/GH/s they're running more expensively than Avalons and BFl 65nm gear - which can had for more or less free nowadays.  Thanks for the review but this item is dead before it even hit the shelves.
1028  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What is average cost of electricity for miners? on: July 30, 2014, 05:59:49 AM
Currently paying ~0.075/USD/kw here in Oregon.  I too have heard of 2 cent per kilowatt hour electric somewhere in Eastern Washington I believe.  Isn't that where Megabigpower resides?

Here's a quick summary of average prices around the world circa 2013
http://theenergycollective.com/lindsay-wilson/279126/average-electricity-prices-around-world-kwh

My friend that lives in Denmark as well as my girl's family living in Germany confirm the two most outrageous #'s you'll see there.  Absolutely nuts!

Interesting to see how much electricity costs vary from region to region and see people's posted costs here in the threads.

Yes that is painful to look at.  I could moved some of my miners to my in-laws in Seattle since power is about $0.02 but I can only keep my most stable of rigs up there since every has to be controlled remotely.  One lockup and it's 3 months of downtime.

No way in hell can I mine here in Los Angeles with $0.36 rate.  1000 miles away, 18x the cost - makes total sense  Roll Eyes
1029  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitcoin difficulty may actually go down in ~7 days! on: July 30, 2014, 05:54:10 AM
Wow everybody has already forgotten those massive hashrates on BTCGuild last year when AM and Avalon were pretty much the only shows in town (oh excuse my ignorance, Luke did have his Single hashing at BFL's lab).

I'm sure friedcat has the $30 mil available for full development - afterall this was the original crowdfunded ASIC company.  How much miners in total did they end up selling with blades and eruptors and cubes?
1030  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: bitcoin mining not profitable anymore on: July 30, 2014, 05:47:04 AM
In the past people bought miners because they promised to deliver more hash to their customers than their competitors at an earlier point in time coughBFLcough.  Now the new people joining are buying cloud mining contracts and the companies can afford to operate on very lean profits from the mining since they resell the hash at an inflated rate.
1031  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: IS mining on CEX.io is profitable for small scale? on: July 30, 2014, 05:42:47 AM
The issue with mining contracts is you can't resell the GH/s, so you're stuck whether or not it is profitable.

At least with CEX you can sell back the GH/s. There are even some trade bots that will automatically buy and sell based on the price swings. There's definitely opportunity there, but with contracts your BTC is gone.

If you're holding mining contracts for that length of time you're doing it wrong.  Mining contracts can make you a lot of money if you use them correctly - targeting pump and dump new coins.
1032  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Best Bitcoin Miner for ~300? on: July 30, 2014, 05:40:31 AM
Be advised that the S1s are considerably louder than an S3.  You could sneak an S3 into a bedroom and probably sleep in the same room - not the case with a stock S1.
1033  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: approx how much is 1 60 gh/s going to make in a day on: July 30, 2014, 05:38:53 AM

how much to buy an sc miner 60 gh/s

If you're in the Los Angeles area I have 5 left I can sell each one for $50 Tongue  Honestly it's not worth it unless you have free power.  The SC Miners are horribly inefficient compared to what is out now.
1034  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: btc guild unlucky of late? on: July 30, 2014, 05:33:14 AM
variance!! do I win a prize?  Grin

Ah... regarding this hearsay about a large hasher withholding blocks, I was not aware of that but as I said at the beginning of this thread I was starting to wonder if it was something like that going on.

Don't get me wrong, I love the pool's site, best interface around and very clear, plus the operators at least appear to be very transparent.  It was just that terrible luck they had a few days ago that left me thinking WTF??

Well the pool was running close to 105.9% luck if I recall for their 3 month average before the sh*t hit the fan in May (when the withholding attack started supposedly).  At that time nobody complained that the pool might be cheating, although people did allege that in the past back in 2011.

So when it's up almost 7% (106-99) nobody complains.  When it's down 7% something is wrong.

The withholding attack is not hearsay BTW, the person was identified.  But he states his custom version of CGMiner was at fault.  The thing is it could have happened at any pool, and some pools don't even bother with the nice stats. Too bad the withholding didn't go on at ghash.io lol.  The same "attack" also occurred on Eligius and the guy is asking for payment which Eligius held once they discovered the problem.  You can check the pools subforum for this info.

Eleuthria might not be eligible for sainthood but he's one of the best pool ops around.

The problem with the withholding event is very simple it now is true it can be done.

If anyone with a copy of that custom cgminer wants to attack any pool and make it hard to detect they can.  Since cex.io is so big they have the ability to toss 2ph to 4ph in the shitter on any pool they want.

the only defense for a with holding attack is solo mining.

But it should be noted that anybody who tries to do that would also be harming their own income unless the pool is paying PPS.  If you're mining on PPLNS you will be hurting your own income stream.
1035  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: What PSU you use for your antminer S3? on: July 30, 2014, 05:27:19 AM
If it needs 340W I would recommend a PSU capable of putting out 400W on a single rail or if you're running 2, you would need 800-850 depending on manufacturer.  If it's a Seasonic Platinum you could get away with a 750 and probably be OK for a year or 2.

Dogie's PSU guide is your friend:

Just added Wayans brothers, who didn't watch "Don't be a menace.." or "Scream" Smiley

Those are part of the Wayans brothers, but those 2 are not as funny as Keenan or Daman - change the names out.
1037  Other / Off-topic / Re: Lawyers on: July 29, 2014, 12:17:53 PM
For most of us a lawyer is a scum sucking leech and we couldn't feel anything if we saw one get hit by a car (since then 2 more would show up like cockroaches).  It's when you get in trouble that a lawyer may sadly become your best friend.
1038  Other / Off-topic / Re: The greatest most beautiful plane ever built? on: July 29, 2014, 12:15:10 PM
I would agree with the SR-71 have the sleekest lines, the B52s being the workhorse that could do everything, but my favorite "fixed wing" happens to be the one with the variable wing - none other than the F14 Tomcat aka Top Gun - that was like the modern day version of Macross Fighter  Shocked
1039  Other / Off-topic / Re: The greatest most beautiful plane ever built? on: July 29, 2014, 12:12:21 PM
Nasa and Airforce already have much faster airplane that is using scramjet engine. Blackbird max speed is only mach 3+ while this new planes has top speed up to mach 24. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scramjet But this planes is still classified.

Scramjet can't take off from the ground.  It's not a self contained system.  Otherwise the Space Shuttle blows the doors off a scramjet.
1040  Other / Off-topic / Re: Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. WTF? on: July 29, 2014, 11:52:01 AM
Given that a jet like a 747-400 can weigh over 600 TONS we fully loaded you're not going to have any kind of parachute deploy to stop that thing from falling.  Barring the plane losing a wing like MH17 the glide a plane has would still provide more lift than any parachute.
You know that the U.S plans to send people to Mars by 2025, right? And they will all be in a spacecraft that when entering the atmosphere of mars will still hurl towards it at incredible speeds, at which point, they will use a parachute most likely to decrease the speed of their descent.

So I am very sure it's possible to do it.

Possible yes.  Realistic, hell no.
http://www.deseretnews.com/article/695216679/ATK-tests-the-largest-parachute-in-the-world.html?pg=all - would be able to control a planes fall, but it would cost more than the plane itself.

US can't even build a new nuclear power plant by 2025, how the hell can they get people to Mars lol.  My dad worked at JPL and I have always loved space exploration but 2025 yeah right.

A tin can falling to Mars designed for vertical descent using a paracute is different from a fixed wing aircraft designed for subsonic horizontal flight.
