Thanks for this link, MakingMoneyHoney's thread is much more entertaining...

The earthquake was this morning? What's the point of the poll...a joke?
1043  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is wealth boring? on: July 22, 2015, 04:51:57 AM
People are boring. Wealth can't be boring...it's an enabler. It's a freedom giver and a stress reducer. Wealth makes it possible to live out whatever creative (or boring) ambitions one has.

Don't get me wrong, the value of life isn't gained through wealth, but life is made a lot easier.
1044  Economy / Economics / Re: Banks Suck on: July 21, 2015, 09:46:56 PM
The banking system is headed to collapse so keep resisting and building and stacking your BTC. It's just basic macroeconomics, nothing more. A basic understanding of economics doesn't make a person "wedded to bankster propaganda," as if there were such a thing.

You get rid of all those evil banksters and then you'll learn what a modern economy becomes and looks like without banks.

It's hard to call it modern when it doesn't exist yet. Every country in the world operates the same system. The developed countries obviously have greater scale to indulge in what us folks would consider negatives of that system. But there is no country in the world that works on a different system or a better system...so the modern system is what we're proposing we get away from.

What future system would you propose? How do we make the transition without the world as we know it collapsing?
1045  Economy / Economics / Re: Video: The Biggest Scam In The History Of Mankind (Documentary) on: July 21, 2015, 09:07:36 PM
Is there a Government in the world that isn't committing this scam?

The biggest problem is that the system, in the US, has been going on since 1913...bankers and politicians of today are operating within a system they didn't create. How do we end this system?

Thanks for sharing the vids.

P.S. I'd argue vigorously that the biggest scam in the history of mankind was the Nazi regime.
You need to understand something. Scam is only a scam is it is advertised as legit business and then bubble pop.  Nazi ideology was not a scam at all because people knew what is going on and what they are following.
We can't end this broken system unless number of people disappointed and angry who 'have not' will be exceptionally higher that people who 'have'. Number of poor people are increasing exponentially, as we speak.
So maybe we will see some society rifts  and shifts appearing during our lifetime.

I think the early era of the Nazi regime had EVERYONE fooled. It wasn't until the nearing of the end and WWII that people realized the atrocities that were happening by this self proclaimed "political party".

I think you're right on the banking front. The real irony is that the damage would be less for everyone if the spending disappeared and an overhaul of the banking system occurred (which would result in heavy inflation, i'm sure.) But as long as people keep getting what they need their short term view will be "don't fuck with it! don't mess with what I have/get." So the alternative is a system that crumbles which will lead to a much more significant fall for everyone.

Since the governments and banks are in bed together, and the debt is being created somewhat out of thin air (don't get me wrong, the expenses are real, but the debt is being created out of thin air), why not just cancel it? That's the only other option I can think of - a planned reset to zero.

Bullying comes in many forms and is so damaging to people. Yeah, it may build some "thick skin" but ultimately it just hurts people. Leave the shame for the church.

1048  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Physical Crypto General Discussion on: July 21, 2015, 08:53:21 PM

Chainsaw's addition of a multiplier column in his chart was useful because it was right next to all the other stats.

Here's the same information written three different ways, in order of decreasing usefulness:

"fives sell for 6-8btc"

"fives sell for a 1-3btc premium over face"

"fives sell for 1.2-1.6x face"

Everyone is, indeed, making this more complicated than it is. I wonder how complicated things would get if I tossed a coin up on the auction block and accepted bids in both BTC and USD?

Nubbins, great thread idea and thanks for adding this summary above - it sums it up perfectly. I was more or less looking for acceptance of my "preferred" approach as a useful option rather than complete dismissal of it.

On to more relevant comments...regarding ANACS grades being high recently. This does seem to be the trend. But should we be surprised that so many Casascius coins have come back with such high grades? A lot of these coins have never left roles or have been in plastic cases from moments after they were created by Mike. I would expect a lot of these coins to be in high mint state, especially the silvers.

I'd love to see a pocket change worn AU 50 or something with some real patina, with hologram intact. And I'm sure there are bunch around in boxes some where from people who bought these "tokens" in 2011 and forgot about them.

The condition of these coins is different from the condition of circulated fiat coins, how will that turn the long term valuations on its head?
1049  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTB/WTS] Casascius Holo Error / Collectible Marketplace on: July 21, 2015, 08:35:12 PM
Sure - once it sells I'll add it to the price table.
Good luck, elianite! I'll be watching with interest.
IIRC, there are only 400 of the 0.1 pieces

According to Spotcoins there were 800 minted and 792 are still funded -> http://www.spotcoins.com/bitcoin/casascius

That was my first time participating an auction here. Had a mild heart attack when I realized that all entries are final - no edits allowed!

The moral is, bid with confidence! This is a beautiful coin...

Welcome! There's a lot of smart people here, so get lost int he different rooms and boards and enjoy learning as much as you care to. There are also a handful of idiots/jerks, when you come across them don't let them keep you aware from the forum.

Re; your question on BTC0.1...what do you want to do with it? It's certainly a great start.
1053  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Are Bit-X and Bit-X Financial Corp. the same company? on: July 21, 2015, 04:19:49 PM
Opening this discussion back up because I just saw this article about BitX exchange in South Africa -> http://www.coindesk.com/africas-largest-firm-leads-4-million-raise-for-bitx/

So there is:
  • Bit-X (which advertises on this Forum)
  • Bit-X Financial Corp (which has Digatrade exchange)
  • BitX

All have nearly the same name and all offer exchange services!? What are the chances?
1054  Other / Off-topic / Re: Worst mistake you did with Bitcoin? on: July 21, 2015, 07:22:54 AM
Not buying some the first time I became aware of it in the $10s. It seemed too hard to purchase back then...it would have been worth the effort.

I don't see an entry for the 2013 BTC0.1 coin, can you add it? Elianite's auction going on right now would be a good "first price" to fill the entry!
1057  Other / Archival / Re: [WTS] CASASCIUS SILVER 1BTC COINS ►► MS69 ◄◄ on: July 21, 2015, 06:55:05 AM
Great coins!

What's the DCAM designation on some of the ANACS slabs?

Thanks.

It stands for deep cameo. It means the coin has exceptional eye appeal and has a great mirror finish iirc.

Interesting, and does this classification come in correlation to grading numbers (i.e. all MS 68 are DCAM?) or irrespective of the grading number?

Sounds like coins with the DCAM designation could command a higher sale price on the secondary market.
1058  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTB] Casascius Coins on: July 21, 2015, 06:43:15 AM
There is a major flaw in using multiplier for crypto related items, since it is not generic for all the items we trade here:

Casascius St. Petersborg Bowl coin, multiplier = ?
Casascius Bearer bar, multiplier = ?
Kialara (not funded), multiplier = ?
Cryptolator (not funded), multiplier = ?
Lealana buyer funded, multiplier = ?
Genesis (not funded), multiplier = ?
Ravenbit (not funded), multiplier = ?
DIY (no private key, not funded), multiplier = ?
Novelty coins (no private key), multiplier = ?
Redeemed coins, multiplier = ?
Altcoins, volatile face value, but prices in bitcoin, multiplier = ?
Nastycoin (face value is a "seat", but also have a balance which increase over time), multiplier = ?
etc.

This leave us with a method for "comparing the prices" which only apply to the subset of the coins.

At least "nubbins formula" can be used for all the items and not only Casascius.
SALE PRICE = (FACE VALUE) + (NUMISMATIC VALUE) + (SELLER'S PREMIUM)

The other problem which has already been pointed out, is the over-funding.
The argument about a coin being over-funded is worth less than an precise funded coins have a problem:
As Blazed have pointed out before (cannot find the quote), it is just a matter of time before a troll takes the entire Casascius address list and spray it with dust, then will all the coins Casascius 1 BTC coins have a balance of 1.00000001 BTC - nothing anybody can do about that.

Sorry guys, i can't help myself...if I'm outstaying my welcome on this topic please tell me and I'll shut up about it (seriously).

A multiplier is as generic as it gets...VALUATION MULTIPLIER = (SALE PRICE) / (FACE VALUE)

A few additional points about valuation multipliers, I'll repeat for TookDk:
  • They aren't used to determine sales price, they're used to compare sales prices
  • It's not a replacement for the formula Nubbins shared about how to calculate a proposed or appropriate sale price
  • They don't need to be the same across different coin types or issues, in fact that's the point - it's a method to standardize the comparison between different coin types or issues

Having a multiplier for all the coins you list above would enable us all to quickly see which coin the market values with the highest premium based on its valuation over face.

Chainsaw started (a while back) a thread about Casascius coin sales and he/she includes a multiplier in the table -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=214589.0. Are you all willing to give this thinking on valuation some credit now that I'm not the only one using it?

E.g. Notice the difference in the multiplier between the series 1 coins and the multiplier for the higher denomination coins (BTC25)..the valuation difference is HUGE for the series 1 coins and the multiplier makes it really easy to see/understand.

You guys/gals keep making this more complicated than it is.

Use Xapo or Coinbase as your transaction bank. You can feel more secure keeping a bit more money on it (it's not just on your smartphone), like $500-$1000 and use either company's mobile app to facilitate transactions.
