1101  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTS] MS68 Casascius 0.1btc silver coin on: July 19, 2015, 08:34:30 AM
To the OP, when you take those pictures can you please make sure the pics are clear so we can see the detail and know the 6 digit address prefix (so we can verify the coin is funded)?

Thanks.

This is actually a point ive often thought about;

When it comes to Casascius coin, wouldn't it make more sense to blur out the prefix, while ensuring that the photo is very clear and proves that the hologram is intact? This way, the particular coin cannot be 'tracked'. I personally believe this is the best way; has a fully intact casascius coin ever been seriously questioned regarding it being funded?

That said, im happy to ensure it all shows clearly if thats what the buyers want Smiley

p.s. What are the market's thoughts on using throw-away handles vs. original accounts for sales? I didnt put much thought into it; just figured 'why not'. On one hand; escrow and clear photos eliminate risk. on another hand, the well-known individual may gain much more interest. Thoughts?

The funding interest is also to make sure the coin hasn't been overfunded, beyond what Mike first funded the coin with - to me (not everyone) this ruins the original value and state of the coin.

I think using a newb account to facilitate sales is fine, you'll just be expected to use an escrow for the sale and payment.

1103  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Research survey on: July 19, 2015, 04:48:27 AM
This question is misleading: How much BTC is on average on your Bitcoin account?

Post people don't have accounts (like one would for Xapo or Coinbase), most hold independent wallets and several of them. So if you want to know what the average amount is on someone's wallet you need to get more specific - alot of people have a wallet for spending, which would have a low average balance and others for saving their balance, which would have the higher average balance.

You could change the question to: How much BTC do you own on average?

Good questions and survey structure overall. Thanks.
1104  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A world without block rewards on: July 19, 2015, 04:40:51 AM
Hey, great question and I look forward to getting the answer. I do have an additional question for you or someone else - are the miners really paying the transaction fees? I thought transaction fees were paid by the person who initiated the transaction. Why would miners have to pay if the fee for doing the processing work and keeping the blockchain alive.

If you think this is hijacking your thread, I'll delete the question. Thanks.
1105  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who controls bitcoins? on: July 19, 2015, 04:17:18 AM
No. Wrong. Bitcoin is not a symptom of the internet.

Do you understand fiat currency? Fiat currency theories and rules don't apply (largely) to Bitcoin. There is now centralized force. In one sense the person who created bitcoin probably could have a lot, so Satoshi, but since that person doesn't own exclusively the ability to create bitcoin they can't control the supply.

It's a beautiful thing!
1106  Economy / Economics / Re: Video: Clarke and Dawe - Quantitative Easing on: July 19, 2015, 04:02:43 AM
Ha, that's funny. Obviously they're making light of QE.

I didn't hear any misdirection in their comments but they're not really describing QE, they're describing the process by which Governments keep increasing their debt limits and therefor expand their debt.

It does involved governments increasing the money supply and artificially supporting (by keeping down) interest rates by buying their own debt. It implies that this can only build a house of cards which must fall. And I guess since Greece and Cyprus have done so poorly people may think that this is true (or has been proven). But Greece and Cyprus weren't conducting QE, where they? The real thing to watch is the American economy. They've conducted several rounds of QE and have now (in the past 9 months) ended (largely) the process - of buying their own debt. So watching the American economy and rates will help educate others on how governments can come back from this kind monetary fixing...but this is only QE.

The real test is how governments can come back or live with the ever increasing debt cycle that has gotten to a point where paying off the interest is difficult. Either the debt gets forgiven at sometime - causing a reduction in the value of the government's currency and causing inflation in prices OR the government goes bankrupt. The latter can't really happen, so when will the former happen? That's what everyone is worried about.
1107  Economy / Economics / Re: [POLL] Bitcoin has actually value ? on: July 18, 2015, 10:56:27 PM
You shouldn't allow people to vote more than once, it'll skew your findings.

Bitcoin, like every currency, metal, or item that has been traded in the history of humans has value ONLY because people assign it value.
1108  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ebay Forbids Bitcoin for Payments on: July 18, 2015, 10:51:53 PM
This is confusing. eBay doesn't conduct or handle any payments. eBay uses PayPal and they just decided to spin off the PayPal unit, so this sounds like a non-issue.
1109  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: RESEARCH - Target clients of Bitcoin? on: July 18, 2015, 10:50:02 PM
Sani, researchers come to this forum all the time asking for our time and insight. However they rarely share their findings with us (or pays us).

I refuse to complete this survey unless you guarantee this community that you will share your findings once your research is complete.

Will you commit to this agreement?

I encourage all other community members to make the same requirement/request.
1110  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Research survey on: July 18, 2015, 10:49:17 PM
Usander, researchers come to this forum all the time asking for our time and insight. However they rarely share their findings with us (or pays us). Thanks for giving us the option - can you also post the findings to the forum so everyone can benefit?

I encourage all other community members to make the same requirement/request.

For a survey about anonymity you should provide results to everyone so ppl filling out your survey can remain anonymous (and not give you our email address as you request.)

http://www.coindesk.com/charges-against-colorado-bitcoin-trader-dismissed/

Great news! Colorado remains a Bitcoin friendly state.

It's very unfortunate that Burt has endured $95,000 of legal fees based on a charge that was ultimately deemed not worthy of bringing to the courts. I hope he plans to sue the Government or State of Colorado for recuperation and reimbursement of his time and money. The legal system also needs to reward people for the time and money they force citizens to endure for frivolous charges.
1112  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: best way for earning bitcoins on: July 18, 2015, 07:44:34 AM
What ever you do for a job right now or plan to if you're in school is the best way to earn bitcoin. Do whatever you do to earn as much fiat as possible per hour, then use that fiat to buy bitcoin.

P.S. There are multiple threads about this topic. You should find them, close this thread, and then read them.
1113  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTB] Casascius Coins on: July 18, 2015, 07:24:38 AM
Feel free to chat all you want in this thread since we have no other place to do it. Multiplier for Casascius does not work and never has. Some coins get 2-3x face, but it just depends. The 5BTC coins command 2-3 over face while the 25 is lucky to get 2 over face. Some Casascius have crazy markup while others do not...it is a unique market indeed.

Hey Blazed, since you're ok to continue talking about it...

I (very respectfully) still think you all are missing the point. The multiplier is not meant to be the same across things (Casascius coins in this case), it's just meant to be used as a comparison. The multiplier works better for Casascius coins than fiat coins because there isn't a standard market yet, and more importantly because there are multiple denominations that can trade with various premiums - the fact that it's a unique market makes the value of discussion price comparisons in terms of multipliers even greater.

Based on your experience (from what you've said above), the multiplier for a 5BTC coin is 2-3x, the multiplier for a 25BTC coin is 1.08x. The multiplier of the tenth I bought (at 0.7BTC) would by 7x face. It's just a factor used for comparison...it's different depending on whatever people pay - you or me, now or tomorrow.

It's like finding the lowest common denominator of two fractions so as to compare the two (that originally had different denominators.)

A multiplier can be applied any time a premium is paid over face. And a multiplier is only really useful when two similar items that have different face values want to be compared for the purpose of valuation.

I don't have a history with Quickseller or this forum to be worthy of a vote on his/her specific candidacy. However as a Sr. Member of the forum community I do have a right to share what I believe the qualities that exemplify a Moderator, those are primarily:

  • One who is willing to remain objective to the facts at all times, a judge (which is what a Moderator often is) must remain objective to the situation or decision, regardless of personal impact or opinion
  • One who is willing to hold restraint at times when it would be easy (and human nature) to make a quick and forceful, yet potentially rash and damaging decision

Thanks

That's interesting. A ton of activity from Europe, US, and a few centers of a few other countries.
1116  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTC business that exists today would make it easiest for WalMart and others? on: July 18, 2015, 04:26:49 AM
Coinbase. The transmitters represent the best opportunity for retailers like WalMart to process, at volume, bitcoin payments.

Da Dice had a decent system of grading campaign participants by post quality and rewarding those that posted well and kicking out those that didn't.

Monetary rewards are what's causing spam, let's use that same element to fight it. Reward those that add to the community, don't reward (or diminish the reward) for those that don't add to the community. Obviously the definition of "add to" is subjective so the definition needs to be broad enough to satisfy most people.

The companies and the campaign managers have the responsibility to police their crew of participants - that's a fact.

The forum plays the fine balance of setting bans to those abusing the rules and letting the other shit get by - it's a tough role to play.

It makes more sense to try to police the few that make these opportunities possible than the many that are trying to make some money from it.

Maybe start a new topic for people to obsess over?
1119  Economy / Economics / Re: How to save money. on: July 18, 2015, 03:55:56 AM
Saving money is about discipline, hard work, and self education.  Easy way to save money is think of something you buy regularly either every day, or week and don't need and cut that out.  One thing that comes to mind is cigarettes, and alcohol.
Some other off the top of my head thoughts:

  • Pay off all debts first!  I see student loans mentioned a bunch, and it is unfortunate that that cost hinders people, but with a college education you should earn enough to pay these off in a reasonable time frame.
  • Bargain shop for groceries, and buy things in bulk like canned foods, and food from markets.
  • Drink tap water rather than buying expensive drinks.
  • Don't eat out as often, and make sandwiches etc.
  • Figure out your monthly budget, and allocate 20% devoted to savings, or some form of savings.  Like OP says divide this into 10% emergency fund, and 10% for investments IRA, or just some Mutual Fund/ETF you can let compound.
  • It may take stepping out of your comfort zone temporarily, and working two jobs if your situation is bad. But, it could also speed up paying off debts, and be worth it in the long run.
  • Last one I thought of is don't reproduce if you are having trouble providing for yourself alone.  Kids are expensive!

I am not a professional financial adviser, but I do think some of saving money is common sense.  Also there are plenty of tips available online, and if you can visit a Bitcoin forum i'm sure you can find those too! Best of luck to those trying to save more.

Completely agree with paying allocating savings first, "pay yourself first" as they say by allocating deposits to savings accounts as soon as you get paid, before you get your net pay from the paycheck (if at all possible). This will help people live within a budget that has at least accounted for savings requirements, especially if you're not the type to follow a strict budget. You'll learn to live within the post-savings means and every so often increase the savings amounts, especially when you get a raise.

As for the time needed/planned for paying back student loans - what do you think is a "reasonable time frame"?
1120  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What was your last purchase with bitcoin? on: July 17, 2015, 10:53:38 PM
I purchased something last week - Friday.

The slow volume on your end might be that people who use bitcoin don't know that you accept it OR you don't offer things that people who use bitcoin want to buy. The Android market is still small. I'd work on advertising your support of Bitcoin...place ads on this forum, the Reddit forums, others.
