1401  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: The mining market balance on: June 21, 2012, 01:16:54 PM
Im sure some people will call for a fork, or even go for it, but I cant see it gathering any real traction. Whatever other algorithm you decide upon, it can be accelerated by another ASIC, so its going to happen again at some point. Will you keep forking and changing the protocol? It makes no sense, its gonna happen, so it may as well be now. I think most people will understand that and not follow a fork which only purpose is cutting off the legs of the first vendor(s) who invested heavily in to bitcoin.

The idea is already germinating:

"So, in this arena - price wise what would be a very reasonable estimate of how much it would cost BFL?
(so I know if the major effort to very slightly possibly invalidate sha256 would be worth the while to kill their company)"
-kano (posted in "Lancelot" official discussion thread)

Much as I like and respect kano, this is the attitude that has me slightly concerned.

+1

Oh well. Looks like I'll have to use a bulky ATX PSU to power my two boards.
Just get 2 wall warts....
1403  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [400GH/s] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: June 21, 2012, 12:59:59 PM
Rav3n_pl forwarded me a link to his local p2Pool stats page, which was very useful.

Can anyone else do that? Or take a screenshot or something? You can pm me the screenshot so it wont end up public.

I was sort of assuming that they would all have the same stats? I run a node that I don't mine to, and that I don't advertise on a fast box with a decent connection. Do you still want the url?
1404  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] The world's first handheld Bitcoin device, the Ellet! on: June 21, 2012, 12:41:47 PM
No way a device with no battery could power a vibrating motor, and no way such a motor could fit into such a thin device and still work effectively. I'm guessing this thing runs on a new design of flat supercapacitor, instead of traditional battery technology.
The Ellet uses a battery and is not a fictitious "project of the future" that paid representatives cannot get their stories straight about the functionality of. It uses a battery. It needs charging like everything else in reality. It also uses standard protocols and does not try to reinvent the wheel of dozens of years of progress "because bitcoin".
Sorry! I thought I was in the bitcoincard thread when I said that.
1405  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Idea: age verification by university quiz on: June 21, 2012, 12:35:27 PM
Require webcam, have the visitor capture and upload imagery of their genitals (it must be from the attached image-capturing device), have site app determine whether genital (or breast) size is large enough to be considered an adult.

Duh.
"If you are Asian, click here for slightly less stringent size verification" lol

Seriously, there are cigarette vending machines in Japan that use cameras to try to determine age based on facial features, height and so forth. Even those have trouble with accuracy.

Can you go back and play debt collector? I'm sure that even if he doesn't owe you anything, you would love to get him for damaging your rep. Teflone was producing some hot air about doing the same thing, but I kind of doubt it got farther than planning stage.

So he now has an unfair advantage over other miners

Yeaaaaa.  *starts handing out pitchforks*
* rjk puts on his robe and wizard hat.

I just LOVE all the little Easter eggs that keep showing up with these things. Even little things like a green light on nonce found. A lot of effort went into this, more than people realize.
1409  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A Public Plea to Bitcoin Developers and Supporters alike on: June 21, 2012, 12:09:33 PM

Ideally, Bitcoin mining should always be done on equipment that has a different primary use. For example, mining on GPUs.
Sure, if it's competitive. Otherwise, why bother?

If the algorithm was changed to be hostile to specific hardware, it would still only be a matter of time before someone finds a new approach
to make specific hardware successful again. So, what does that leave us?
Like the OP proposed: The algorithm would need to be altered on a periodic basis or from time to time. This would discourage anybody from making specific hardware.
This comes with its own set of challenges. A trustworthy source by the community would have to lead the way in order for each change to be successful. Changing the core components to Bitcoin is extremely difficult. I just don't see this happening.

Changing the proof of work algorithm periodically would do nothing more than promote centralization. Why? Simple: I don't know of any developer that will continually rewrite a GPU kernel or FPGA bitstream from scratch "just because". They need a damn good reason because they put a lot of time and effort into it. Therefore, the only ones with optimized hardware would be those like ArtForz who own the hardware already and are capable of writing fast kernels to run on it.

We even saw previously him (and others?) selling access to faster kernels, just because he had the expertise to write them in the first place. Don't kid yourself that an algorithm change periodically just for the fun of it would in any way promote decentralization - even though a kernel may be written to support the new proof of work and distributed to the miners, it will never be the fastest available in the first iteration.

Btw, I thought they couldn't use computers? So SneakerNetBitcoins??

It's a misconception that Amish are technological Luddite. Rather, they evaluate new technologies and determine if it is something that they want in their community.
We live near a ton of them, and it seems that they have many standards. Some use cell phones because there are no wires, and others say that is breaking the spirit of the teachings. There seems to be a sliding scale of progressiveness, depending on where you live. Some refuse to use electricity at all, and others will use it if they generate it themselves.

Several of the woodworkers nearby use an ingenious system to replace electric motors - it is a diesel engine that is connected to a driveshaft that is sunk into the floor of the woodshop. It goes across the entire length of the shop supported on pillow block bearings, and when they want to add a machine, they rip out the electric motor and plonk the machine down on top of the drive shaft. From there, it's as simple as adding a pneumatically controlled clutch and a drive belt to the shaft in the floor. They then sell the motors at auction.

Edit: of course if anyone has a better idea (than xampp) feel free to chime in
I believe the latest versions of PHP come with a tiny webserver specifically for development of code. Haven't tried it though.

EDIT: http://php.net/manual/en/features.commandline.webserver.php

1414  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: FPGA development board "Lancelot" - official discussion thread. on: June 21, 2012, 03:03:49 AM
It helps but logic/RTL verification is one of the easiest steps in a modern ASIC design.
You derisk that by using - guess what - FPGAs. The lower level physical/analog design
is what fucks over most amateur ASIC designs.

-rph

I see, so the person or company that is designing an ASIC really is responsible for the entire thing, it isn't as simple as handing some completed HDL over to a company who will then interpret them into their process and print some chips.

1416  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: FPGA development board "Lancelot" - official discussion thread. on: June 21, 2012, 02:57:28 AM
Would you agree though, rph, that SHA256 is quite a bit simpler than most designs, and therefore is (even slightly) less likely to need several respins before a good wafer is produced?
1417  Economy / Goods / Re: amazon voucher on: June 21, 2012, 02:44:35 AM
hellooooo, right now i've got a $92.46USD amazon voucher from using coinstar to process my bucket of coinage. and it's for sale. so, at the current mtgox low, $6.45001 per btc, it'll be going for 14.33486149633877 btc. since i really would like this sold, i'll round that down to 14+satoshi btc. because satoshi's make me happy. you can decide how much it actaully is  Shocked SaltySpitoon, Mushroomized, and CANDY can all vouch for me- this is my first sale, but i'm honest. you buy, maybe pay a quick percentage depending on your user rating/status/etc.

here is the receipt, with redemption code, machine id, and transaction # blacked out to ease my paranoia. if you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to bring them up here or PM me.

You only need to post in one place not 2.

Another question, do the front screens show any useful information, and if so, what? Also, what ports are on the back other than power and USB?
1419  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: BFL Single Waterblocks -- Gauging interest on: June 21, 2012, 02:40:58 AM
They stated "availability" in "late October", but we don't really know what that means.
1420  Other / Off-topic / Re: Mini Rigs in the wild! on: June 21, 2012, 02:38:33 AM
I do not have something to measure power draw on 208v. I'm happy taking BFL's word on the power draw side of things.
Yeah OK, and even though the PSU will run on 120v I'm sure you don't want to lose even a second of mining time just for some measurements lol. Grin

I'm guessing they also will be better than BFL's numbers because they are on 208v.
