2361  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] OpenBitASIC : The Open Source Bitcoin ASIC Initiative on: May 29, 2012, 01:05:57 PM
LGA packaging would make the boards a lot more expensive and really serve no purpose; first of all, for watercooling etc doesnt matter if you use LGA, BGA, TQFP or anything else, though it might be interesting to make sure the physical dimensions of the mounting holes and thickness match those of a popular CPU socket.

Then again, even that doesnt make all that much sense, an ASIC would likely be so low power, that just a glue on passive heatsink is all you would need.
The reason I suggested it was because I was thinking about packing as much silicon as possible into the size of an LGA package. The more hashers, the more wattage, and I think the existing wattage estimates are for some fairly small dies. If we have 4 of those dies, or even more than that if they are small, it would raise the TDP considerably. Furthermore, it would allow for overclocking headroom. A standard CPU has a fairly small die in a comparatively large package, because of all the communication pins that are needed - but if we only need a few pins, we could perhaps cram a huge die into an existing package type.
2362  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] OpenBitASIC : The Open Source Bitcoin ASIC Initiative on: May 29, 2012, 12:10:22 PM
Oh well, I was kind of hoping we could have a continuous collaborative project going on here, but I guess that doesn't make much business sense.

Have you been able to determine volume pricing for proper metal chip packaging versus plastic? I know Fujitsu has a packaging plant that can handle LGA packaging, like a CPU, and others do too.

I've always wondered whether you could make a standard size ASIC core and then make a product range consisting of chips with 1, 2, 3, or even 4 of those cores, all in the (fairly expensive) LGA packaging. Although it is expensive, I feel that it would be worth it because of the huge amount of aftermarket parts and accessories such as watercooling stuff that is already designed for the LGA form factor. Even the existing CPU sockets are designed to hold chips that have a TDP of upwards of 150 watts! I guess this would be the ASIC for the 1%, but someone needs to make one sometime. Grin

Most buyback clauses specify market plus a percentage, not market minus a percentage.
2364  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Dwolla changes TOS to prohibit Bitcoin transactions? on: May 29, 2012, 12:47:07 AM
I didn't use an exchange either...

So what happens if we simply say "nope."?

Per their User Conduct requirements, they can put a hold on your account for 90 days if you don't verify your identity in line with Veridian's requirements, so they'll probably do just that if you don't accept the new ToS.
The thing is, I wasn't prompted to accept the new ToS until just before this thing went into lockdown mode. What a pain in the ass. Not even my damned BANK needs that info, an no I don't mean a brick-and-mortar bank, I mean an online one that I use for everything, including paycheck direct deposits.

before you try BitcoinAdvertisers.com, see:

Yes, I saw that Sad  I figured maybe I would give them a fair shake but we'll see thanks for letting me know after seeing that thread there is no attempt from a PR standpoint from  Andrew  to fix it ? That doesn't sit well so I'll pass on it ... Thanks for the heads up...

A dispute with a partner running a competing adservice has no effect on advertisers, future advertisers on my service can be assured that fraudulent clicks from that source will not be deducted from your balance.
So... the only reason at all that you are disputing it and making trouble is because they are competition? And those that are not competition have nothing to fear? Shady.
2366  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can someone explain why this transaction is still unconfirmed? 10+ hours on: May 29, 2012, 12:27:13 AM
cuz u owe zomeone a whole btc in another thread?
How is that relevant?

EDIT: That transaction is interesting - it looks like the change transaction was also spent and is still unconfirmed. Wonder if that is confusing some pool software.

2368  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 400 BTC sent to an unknow address. (COINS RETURNED) 40 BTC reward. on: May 29, 2012, 12:19:44 AM
Cool the coins are retured, etc etc  but can we lock this so it doesn't keep getting bumped up - it's closed and finished with now. Thanks.

well the last post was from the very person who sent the coins so that is rather relevant, especially as it was him & not goat who decided to send only 400 coins out of the 3,000 as a test tx, personally I find locking threads to often be a pain - much better to let them gradually fade off as some later feedback or similar situations may be of interest to resurrect them, if you're personally done with the little drama then just skip looking at any updated posts np - I do this with many threads, mark all as read when they pop up in the list of updated one's that I posted in

sry for bumping it again  Grin
I wish I could mark individual threads read without reading them. That would be a good compromise.

yep, we all wish to be able to un-follow threads that we once posted in, one day maybe  Smiley
Well marking as unread would be a different function that could work with an unsubscribe option as well.

Buy the chips and resell them, if they are a good price, and then you might have enough... What model(s) can you get for what price, and how many? I'd be in for a couple for my dual 2011 build, as long as I could sell my laptop, which no one seems to want to buy. Sad
2371  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin in space. on: May 29, 2012, 12:11:00 AM
Wonder if you could get electricity by using Peltier chips backwards - the heat from the miner would run the hot side, and space would run the cold side, and electricity comes out the middle. But that sounds too much like a perpetual motion machine that won't work for some reason.

Or maybe the sun will heat the hot side of the Peltier chips, and the GPUs/FPGAs/ASICs will just dump the heat into space. What is a Peltier chip's efficiency compared to solar?

You don't create reputation, you earn it. Words from the wise!
Yep, and asking how to increase your rep usually lands you on my "suspicious" list.

I suspect that isn't an option once you have agreed to their new terms. I didn't get the new ToS agreement notice on login until just a few days before the account was suspended.

Rjk you are everywhere, that or this forum is really small.
The main functions for this PC is server applications (virtualization) and video processing.
Naw I just talk too much. I actually block much of the forum in my preferences because I have this OCD ish thing that makes me read each and every post. Smiley

Yes, 1155 will somewhat limit you in an application like that, if you intend to push it to its limits. For instance a maximum of 32GB of RAM, and reduced numbers of PCIe lanes for video cards. X79 still has a fairly low upper limit on memory capacity, only 64GB, so if you need more than that you will need a server-grade C600 series chipset.

I've googled a bit and there is no way you will be able to find an x79 or C602 chipset mobo for under $200, unless maybe you can find one used (kind of doubt it). It's kind of new for ebay though.

2378  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BitForce SC - full custom ASIC on: May 28, 2012, 11:08:25 PM
Just to clarify your earlier statements, the trade in for Singles/Minirig buyers is only for the original buyers and not people who have purchased BFL Singles second hand, correct?
Not sure why it would matter, as long as they got their box back.
2379  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTB] X79 LGA2011 Motherboard on: May 28, 2012, 11:06:53 PM
Yeah perhaps if we had a better idea of what it was to used for, we could give alternate recommendations - for instance, video production, photoshoop work, server applications (database, web server, etc), or gaming.

Right now, Ivy Bridge is only available in the 1155 socket, although it supposedly is scheduled for the 2011 socket in Q2 of 2013.

It even comes with a little red button. What happens if you press the little red button?   Shocked

A dyed in the wool killer would have asked about the little red button...
It looks less like a button and more like an indicator light, to me anyways. The high-res pics show it looking slightly translucent.
