2121  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Demise of BitPak on: June 02, 2012, 09:57:53 PM
It's hilarious that Apple portrayed itself in advertisements for years as the young rebel next to the staid IBM PC (for example, see this photo: http://wpcdn2.padgadget.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/ipvpc.jpg).  Now, Apple is the establishment figure and Google/Android/Linux (and PC hardware upon which you can install any OS) is the young rebel.

Even worse, their arch 'nemesis' Bill Gates has been using his billions to eradicate polio and other disease around the world for free while Apple continues to employ child labor and generally be an evil corporation

Can't you just host the app outside the apple store? Or would they shut it down through lawsuit threats
No, the problem is that unless you have a jailbroken phone, it is actually impossible to install any app other than ones that come from the app store. The software won't allow it. And that is the problem: The phone should allow installs, even if Apple doesn't want to "endorse" the software by listing it in the app store, but unfortunately that isn't the case.

I'm excited to read this.

I understand there's a great article on zhoutong (the 17 year old wonder boy genius programmer) and his creation.....Bitcoinica.
Yeah it was kind of outdated before it arrived lol.

Open-source is not an easy concept to grasp.  I'm sorry, but it's also not my fault.
Wow. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse.

Why you gotta be trolling this highly enlightened conversation?
Brotha', that's how I roll.

2126  Other / Off-topic / Re: Mini Rig announcement by Butterfly Labs - 25gh/s on: June 02, 2012, 08:16:19 PM
I almost get the feeling they arbitrarily delay postage. like they wanna mine themselves as much as they can before shipping it. Ofcourse they deny this.
The current wait is because of a lack of cases, apparently the boards are ready to ship but there's nothing to put them in.
2127  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: One strike web of trust, where a verified personal photo is your ID? on: June 02, 2012, 07:13:12 PM
Already exists, no need to reinvent the wheel. See the thing in action here: http://www.startssl.org/?app=11

Notaries verify each other in person with a photo ID. Rogue users risk their certificates being revoked.
2128  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] ASUS P6T7 WS SuperComputer LGA 1366 Intel Mobo on: June 02, 2012, 06:29:50 PM
Does this board require the use of x16/x16 Extenders for video cards ? .....or pin shorting using x1/x16 Extenders ?

I am spoiled by all of my X58 LGA1366 boards and the flexibility, but I am interested in this board if it can use x1's WITHOUT pin shorting.
No video card requires an x16 extender, they can all run on an x1 if you want them to. However, I haven't tested it with x1 extenders, so I don't know whether it would require jumpers or not. I suspect that it wouldn't, but I'm not sure about that. You can buy x1 extenders that already have that pin shorted (I think, not sure where), so that might be an option.

Before the RMA replacement, it was mining in a case with 3 5870s, and that was working great. However, I don't have a processor or RAM to test with, so I have left it in the packaging.

I'd love to use two factor auth, but I don't even have a cell phone. Are there other ways to do two factor auth? And are there any plans to implement them soon? I hope so.
Several ways. Yubikey is my personal favorite, but here is a bunch of links:

http://yubico.com/ <-- The makers of the Yubikey
http://www.symantec.com/verisign/vip-authentication-service <-- paid service that PayPal and many others use for authentication. Yubico makes a credential that is compatible with this service as well.
http://onlinenoram.gemalto.com/ <-- TOTP token that AWS uses for authentication, made by Gemalto. This is a dedicated device that can do the same thing as Google Auth, without the phone.
http://motp.sourceforge.net/#7 <-- links to lots of tokens and related software.
https://lastpass.com/ <-- password storage software that works on almost any platform and almost any browser, and that can use 2-factor auth for logging in.
2133  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: FirstBits + VanityGen on: June 02, 2012, 04:37:58 PM
Yeah, if you use a good firstbits looker-upper. Firstbits.com is major fail when it comes to this, and is often inaccurate. Use blockchain.info.

EDIT: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=75665.msg936807#msg936807

Yes, I'm very sorry. Firstbits.com had some upper/lower case mistakes recently.

It works correctly now. If something still seems wrong please let me know.

Our lookups are often slow also, I suggest you use blockchain.info.
For my specific instance, I still am seeing the same problem. Does firstbits.com consider the order of a sendmany transaction?

Also, as one who has implemented the firstbits functionality, how hard to you think it would be to build into the satoshi client, and do you think that would be a good idea?
2134  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Mini Rig card = 2 x Altera Arria II EP2AGX260 on: June 02, 2012, 04:17:38 PM
Can't pcie slots provide up to 75W of power?
Actually, the 3.0 spec allows up to 150 watts, but there are few boards that support that.

Pre-3.0 specs are 10 watts all the time, up to 25 after boot, and up to 75 on request of the installed device, I believe, if what I read is accurate.
2135  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I suspect GPUMax was compromised and passwords stolen on: June 02, 2012, 03:44:37 PM
Question: when is someone going to invent a be-all, end-all service that is totally full of awesome and win, and then decide to force all users to use a proper 2-factor authentication system? It needs to happen, and the day it does happen is the day many people realize that it really isn't as hard as they thought, and increase their security awareness accordingly. People are stupid, so they need to be forced to make the right choices, and not conditioned to believe that what happens now is "good enough".
2136  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / BakCoin (was: decline in listening nodes) on: June 02, 2012, 03:40:19 PM
Please can the Bakcoin bullshit be split off and moved to a new thread inside "Alternative Cryptocurrencies", thanks.

I had always planned to do that if/when the material was ready...and if the forum was still a worthwhile venue for presentation at that time.  As it happened, I was challenged about whether I had thought about any solutions to the things about Bitcoin that I consider weaknesses.  And the conversation evolved from there.

Just out of curiosity...  Threads drift off-topic to a vastly larger degree than this one has (and it's arguable that this one actually has.)  Lots of people just ignore conversations which don't really interest them.  This one seems to have really gotten under your skin.  Why do you suppose that is?

Because I ignore the entire "alternative cryptocurrencies" board for a good reason, too much spam and discussion that doesn't interest me, and this topic fits right in. Unfortunately, the current board software doesn't give me the option to ignore a single thread.

No I think that is an unrelated island.

OOooOOoOOooO. Do want.

Pretty please, a pic of them stacked with the correct connectors hooked up?
2139  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: FirstBits + VanityGen on: June 02, 2012, 02:57:44 PM
Hi, and sorry that I couldn't figure out where to post this.

Can someone please clear up this problem I'm seeing?
Lets say someone uses firstbits, to come up with something like 1Fwi3gx. From what I see in the VanityGen thread, it would not take long to generate another address with that prefix. What's stopping someone from doing so, in order to receive coins meant for someone else?

The oldest address in the blockchain that starts with those firstbits is the one that'll be used.
Yeah, if you use a good firstbits looker-upper. Firstbits.com is major fail when it comes to this, and is often inaccurate. Use blockchain.info.
