2002  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: MT.Gox caught lying again on: June 06, 2012, 04:18:33 AM
You do have to wonder how it is possible to continue existence when costs are so high. I doubt the various trading fees are enough to be sustainable. As for costs, I heard some numbers a while back that were amazing - $10k/month just for DDoS protection? And who knows when it comes to the rest of the infrastructure.

I dug around I'm my old IRC logs, but was unable to find another bit of information that I am sure I remember hearing - specifically that all employee salaries for this year had been set aside already before the beginning of the year. I don't remember whether that set aside amount included infrastructure costs though.

If you donate 10 BTC (which pays for about a month of hosting), you get donator status
Sure you can ask, but payment is more direct. I agree with BadBear in this aspect.

(Damn, it's too late to buy back those 4 hours in newbie jail...)
That information is outdated.
2004  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [400GH/s] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: June 06, 2012, 03:23:44 AM
we need some of the bigger pools to support p2pool
Rather, the bigger pools should support decentralized mining. p2pool is just another competing pool Wink

Today, decentralized mining is supported by (in order of when supported) BitPenny, p2pool, Eligius, TripleMining, and maybe EclipseMC.
I don't like your definition of decentralized. I think you should align it more with what is achieved in practice with p2pool, and indeed with bitcoin itself, and then make whatever statements you have to say.
p2pool is no more decentralized than the others, except in useless or even bad ways.
Prove it by substantially disrupting it in such a way that it can no longer function, and then I will believe you. Otherwise, provide suggestions for improvement.
2005  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Critical vulnerability (denial-of-service attack) on: June 06, 2012, 03:14:09 AM
I'm pretty sure Armory doesn't really use bitcoind, just the files bitcoind makes/maintains... Spesmilo does try to use bitcoind.
From the bitcoinarmory.com website:

Quote
Also, Armory does not use independent-networking.  It can be thought of as an “add-on” to the regular Satoshi client (www.bitcoin.org), which needs to be running in order for Armory to work.  In the future, Armory may integrate networking components of the Satoshi client directly, so that all features are integrated into a single program.

Although I believe etotheipi is planning on changing that.

If you are paying more than 50 bucks per month for hosting... you're either heavily invested in uptime or crazy Shocked Wink
Also I think it would be a good idea to allow people out of newbie jail before the 4 hours is up by a small donation (~1 BTC)
Not that it is relevant to this topic, but...
Hosting is provided free by MtGox, from what I understand, same as with the en.bitcoin.it wiki.
And you can ask to be whitelisted in the noob forum.
2008  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Advice for Scam Prevention - Pick up the phone! on: June 06, 2012, 02:39:42 AM
The newdude scammer actually talked to someone on the phone at least once, but he was just as much of an asshole on the phone as he was on the forum. lol

Cheesy  What was the result of that transaction?

Probably a combination of impatience and incompetence. Sad

BAMT should work fine, but if it doesn't just crack windows and use that.
2010  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Critical vulnerability (denial-of-service attack) on: June 06, 2012, 02:22:59 AM
The daemon is already useable by external GUIs, and is also much more stable when performing that task. Take for instance the Armory client which uses bitcoind in the backend. There are others as well.

You don't have to have the GUI to run the daemon; indeed you shouldn't even need to look at a single line of QT code at all.
2011  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Can someone help me out ? on: June 06, 2012, 02:19:48 AM
I'm using Deepbit right now with an average hashing rate of 1.9GHs , I was thinking about maybe switching to a different pool if it gives me a better profit , these electricity bills are getting nice and big  Wink Lol

How can I calculate which pool will give me a higher payout than deepbit ?
Is there a formula I can use to calculate payout ?
Can someone help me ?
Recommendations for pools will be greatly appreciated as well !!

Thank you Smiley

-g2x

If you want absolutely no variance and a steady payout, https://mtred.com/ offers zero fee PPS payouts. I also recommend http://eclipsemc.com/ and http://ozcoin.net/ as reliable pools with zero fees and a DGM scoring method. To maximize returns, you could probably go with Clipse, since GPUMAX might not let you have an account right away. Always remember to set at least one failover pool in your miner configuration, and if your mining software doesn't support failover pools, I recommend that you switch to cgminer.
2012  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: As if Paypal didn't already suck .... on: June 06, 2012, 01:57:40 AM
What's Paypal?  I heard it was something like Bitcoin but with chargebacks, currency debasement, account holds, and 3% fees? Is that true?
LOL touché
2013  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin userbars on: June 06, 2012, 01:52:51 AM
since when some users have pictures in there sig
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=32204
Because they are grandfathered in; if they go edit their sig, they will find that the images have been erased and can't be had back. When theymos decided to ban sig images, he didn't want to go erase all existing images, so they just get erased when the sig gets changed.
2014  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: YubiKey Security on: June 06, 2012, 01:45:26 AM
Interesting. Yubico's free cloud authentication is tempting, but if it has this kind of flaw it is probably best to run your own auth server the same as MtGox is doing. But that means you also have to issue your own Yubikeys. Sad

I've always wondered why Yubico would offer the auth service for free; it seems to me that if they wanted to be competitive and make a quick buck, they could just be a lot cheaper than Symantec VIP, but still have a steady revenue stream from a subscription model.
2015  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [605 GH] Eligius: Decentralized, 0Fee SMPPS, no reg, BTC+NMC on: June 06, 2012, 01:37:26 AM
Can the new address type be used for regular transactions, or is it limited to multisig transaction types only?
2016  Economy / Services / Re: Bitcoin Camming Site on: June 06, 2012, 01:35:46 AM
Just out of curiosity, how much can a girl expect to make during a cam show?
Good question. There is a donations ticker that shows contributions in red as they come in in real time, but I don't know if there is a history of past sessions anywhere. Perhaps some of the girls on reddit could tell you, or you could grab the bitcoin address of a few performers and look at them after a while.
2017  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin userbars on: June 05, 2012, 10:46:53 PM
Problem is you can't use them here... Images in sigs are disallowed.
2018  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: YubiKey Security on: June 05, 2012, 08:52:43 PM
Could you elaborate on the "as most people use them" part? As far as I know, it uses one full AES block, and contains fields for the serial, an 8 hz counter, and some other things.

Since you are using mtgox and pricing things in USD, you should try out their BBCode button creator and let us know how well it works.
