Ok.....

In the worlds current education paradigm, that's pretty much standard - Basic education, no marketable skills outside of a factory or corporation.  Now that you've proven what you already knew, why not try teaching them how to do something marketable, and then try it again?
Teach them what?

I've got 4 classes of 100 students each, the vast majority of whom have a terrible level of English.

One group actually made two really good Kung Fu movies (10 mins each).

It doesn't seem to be a case of giving them the skills, it's more that... they have no drive or innovation. Some of the students did surprisingly well.

Nefario.
1582  Other / Chinese students / Re: Why does this board exist in the forum? on: July 13, 2011, 02:40:46 AM
The internal market was supposed to develop as teams found out one team was better at some things than others. For example, most teams all had skills that would be needed by other teams. Some teams had better I.T. knowledge, others had better English, and others had a better understanding of bitcoin etc.

The idea was teams would hire each other to do certain parts they couldn't. I even gave each team capital (in bitcoin) at the begining. They never used any of it. No market ever developed.

Most students really had NO marketable skills (marketable to their classmates at least).

If you need capital you should probably get listed on GLBSE (glbse.com), I know I've already been contacted by a few people asking about shares for gambling sites (wanting to buy, there isn't any).

Nefario.
My Firefox tells me the website is untrusted??

Yeah, that's the self signed ssl certificate we're using, it throws up warnings but it is secure.

We're in the process of getting one.
1584  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: GLBSE, the bitcoin stock exchange has a new face, and tutorials. on: July 12, 2011, 03:32:50 PM
Awesome, the new site works for me again Smiley

Thats great.

Although, in the tutorials the video's are borked. I'll fix them soon.
1585  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: GLBSE, the bitcoin stock exchange has a new face, and tutorials. on: July 12, 2011, 02:03:03 PM
Can you add a SSL Certificate? There are some free.
The red screen scares new investors ...

It's something we're working on, but getting one when you're in China is surprisingly difficult.
1586  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BitPonzi: GLBSE pyramid scheme! on: July 12, 2011, 12:41:36 PM

Your exchange your rules.. but it strikes me that you're making a gift for whatever competitors come along and setup an exchange that feels more 'business-like'.

GLBSE is just a platform, with the exception of cheating people we take no position on whats traded.

The issuer is upfront on exactly what this is, a Ponzi scheme, if people decide to buy it then they are gambling, and the risk as a result is theirs.

Nefario.

Yeah I got that already..  your reply is just the tl;dr version of your terms and conditions.

The point of my post was about whether you had any concerns about the types of assets you admit affecting the perception of your business, and likely (IMO) effects on growth.

I think you'll do well from the die-hard libertarian quarter - not so much from the general investor/business community.
Your chosen position is entirely consistent with commonly perceived ideals of deregulation and decentralization in the bitcoin community.

It worries me that operations such as yours will deter many from the general uptake of bitcoin - not just your own business.

If it worries a guy like me - it'll positively send some others packing. Hopefully I'm wrong however and the majority of the world will jump into this wild west with open wallets and reckless abandon!

What I would recommend you do is begin a rating service that investigates each asset on GLBSE and gives it a safety rating. This is something thats needed and allows regular investors to choose more wisely.

Check out our new, easy to use face (less pretty than the previous one).

We've added a nice tutorial page (WITH CRAPPY VIDEOS!) to help anyone getting started on listing GLBSE.

Sadly we've not updated our webclient as our main developer for this (Jere Jones) has been quite sick over the last few days, but thats coming.

Comments and suggestions very welcome
1590  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BitPonzi: GLBSE pyramid scheme! on: July 12, 2011, 11:17:23 AM
The first legitimate Ponzi scheme.

If you start using, the more people you get in the more you can get out, and it grows until the last ones to enter are final losers.

Kind of like social security.

Check it out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponzi_scheme

Should GLBSE really be supporting this sort of scheme as one of it's tradable assets?

While I can sort of see a case for it because it's up front about what it is, it strikes me as the sort of thing that will negatively affect GLBSE's growth.
Why not restrict assets to those that have at least a plausible sustainable investment model - and also are not so likely to attract negative attention from the media and/or various law enforcement/regulatory bodies?

While in general I expect the bitcoin community would be hesitant to get law enforcement involved in disputes - there are perhaps cases involving fraud where there is a place for cooperation with certain agencies. (e.g MTGox indicated they may get law enforcement involved with certain aspects of the recent hack)
Having an asset like bitponzi on the books seems to make it unlikely you'd get any cooperation if for some reason the exchange did need to work with investigators on some issue.

That aside.. it's just likely to scare the average investor off and thus reduce the potential depth of the GLBSE exchange.

Wouldn't it be in your interests to drop bitponzi and at least have a basic 'dress code' for listings? - e.g:
a) real world contact details which you have verified (can be kept secret - but retained in case of fraud)
b) plausible sustainable business model
c) enough transparency in operations to give credence to b).

I can see you're going for a hands off approach from your terms and conditions.. which is fine to an extent..
but it puts your interests somewhat at odds with those of the average investor.
BitcoinGlobal could be seen to be making a profit from shonky asset operators.

You state:
"We assume no responsibility or liability for any fraud committed on this exchange but will do our best to prevent its occurrence."
Ponzi schemes aren't likely to fit into most peoples expectations of doing the best to prevent fraud. Even if bitponzi itself is up front about it - you can almost guarantee some early participant will misrepresent it to someone else in order to get more money into the pot.
It's a bit like a company saying they don't spam, yet they encourage their agents to do it on their behalf.

Your exchange your rules.. but it strikes me that you're making a gift for whatever competitors come along and setup an exchange that feels more 'business-like'.

I'm working on this today.
1592  Economy / Marketplace / Re: SkepsiDyne Integrated Node - The Bitcoin Mining Company on: July 11, 2011, 06:01:18 PM
this sucks. your extremely unlucky with malfunctioning and DOA parts.
A surprisingly high percentage of computer hardware is defective from the getgo.  Considering the fact that he has 14 motherboards, 14 sticks of ram, 14 PSU's, 14 processors, and 28 video cards, well, that's 84 pieces of hardware that could be DOA.  Having only 3 parts (that I am aware of) arrive DOA is actually a pretty good percentage...

This, numbers game. Google's had to deal with this for hard drives, they've got their famous study. Bitcoin miners could probably do the same for GPU's.

No, I think that bitcoin miners have higher...needs(right word?) than the average gamer.
1594  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin full page on one of South China's most read weekly newspapers. on: July 11, 2011, 09:11:41 AM
Question: isn't anything appearing in "Southern China's most Read weekly newspaper" inherently approved by the government?

Yes and no.

Yes in that anything printed must be given the OK by the party censors, so that means nothing about human rights etc.

No in the sense that they (the government, party whatever) don't have an opinion on it.

Allowing it to be printed in a paper is not an admission of endorsement.

Just to note that no work was delivered by AntiVigilante, said he'd gotten 1/2 of it completed then I never heard from him again.

This offer is now closed.
1596  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin full page on one of South China's most read weekly newspapers. on: July 10, 2011, 02:47:28 PM
Well, there is this 2009 law that would seem to apply to bitcoin:
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-06/27/content_11610478.htm

I would think at least a few governments would be interested to actually invest in bitcoin as a diversification of their reserves.  For a relatively small amount today, they could establish a decent position in bitcoin and setup a mining operation to help secure the network.  Maybe bitcoin doesn't end up succeeding, on the other hand...

This article explains exactly why Bitcoin is illegal in China since it's inception.

[edit] Illegal to trade in non-virtual goods also created by the issuer, in bitcoins case there is no central issuer, so it's not illegal to have btc, just to buy anything with it.[/edit]
1597  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin full page on one of South China's most read weekly newspapers. on: July 10, 2011, 10:51:02 AM
Does anyone know how the government in China looks at bitcoin yet. Will be see people mysteriously 'vanish' when they're caught mining by the secret police? Will bitcoin.org and other sites be blocked? Perhaps chinese residents getting into bitcoin should take their precautions? I am just saying, the Chinese government is know for having strict control and we all know about 'the great firewall of china'.  Apart from these issues, China surely is a huge market!

So right now this news article is probably the first anyone in the government here has heard about it (probably the first most people have heard about it). What will happen is the Central Bank of China will assert it's right to control currency inside the country and ban the acceptance of bitcoin for goods or services.

On a more practical level the bitcoin website is likely to be blocked.

There will be plenty of Chinese people using bitcoin once it catches on, despite a government ban.

There shouldn't be any vanishing as a result of bitcoin use.
1598  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin full page on one of South China's most read weekly newspapers. on: July 10, 2011, 10:16:47 AM
Ok based on something like this, I'd say we're going to see a HUGE increase in network hashing capability.

One major problem with that it will probably be massive amounts of messed up stuff and botnet traffic to pools. As the average computer users here has 0 comprehension of stuff like security and following instructions to the letter. These normal users are in STARK contrast to a large group of Chinese users with fantastic tech skills but 0 language skills.

This could be a good chance for someone to make a BTC or two by doing a Chinese language GUI for GUIMINER or something similar.

 Grin Grin Grin

You know, most Chinese are human, mostly average. It's not like there's an army of uber communazi's here waiting to take over the world only to be held back by their lack of English.
1599  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: UK exchange: Britcoin on: July 10, 2011, 10:16:40 AM
Yep, well OpenID is so incredibly poor that we're switching to proper logins when we release the new version of our exchange software.

USE RSA KEYS AND JAVASCRIPT CLIENTS ITS THE ONLY WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1600  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: GLBSE stock exchange up and trading. on: July 10, 2011, 10:11:37 AM
I didn't register on GLBSE, but I didn't see any links or info to the companies for which symbol belongs. If I am going to buy shares I would like what the company is about.

You're right, and this part has been a mess so far. Most of the info on companies is spread across these forums, not an easy task to read up on them.

A facelift that was due Friday is being pushed out on Monday, I'm hoping to have a page for each stock ticker on the exchange, a place to keep everything central. I think I'll have this done by Friday (I wish :p).

Making a big push for usability, we're even having screencasts and documentation on how to use everything *GASP*
