Hey prelude, sorry about your batch 8, that sucks.  Mine is really picky, example i change the fan speed and it all goes to hell.  imagine when bitmain will sell the "used" miners in a while....people will buy them and 1 month later b00m its dead
1962  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: December 17, 2015, 02:53:54 AM
Got a batch 8 in today, disappointed with it. Only runs at 4.6Th/s.

hows the power consumption? can you confirm the control board has removed connections? thanks

Didn't have time to get measurements for power use yet. Yes, control board is missing 6 data ports and 4 fan headers.

Notice the very high hardware errors at stock settings. bitmain is selling us cheapened out to the max, overclocked junk.

Thanks, bitmain.  Roll Eyes

wow are you running it in a really cold room ?  Heres what I noticed, put fan speed on manual, and play around with it.  I went from 4500ghs to 4700ghs depending on which fan speed setting I have.  soft reset until you get it, and then dont touch it.

edit:  your hw rate is too high.  you must bring those temps up a bit, or play around with fan speed.  I run at 35%, 3000-3120 rpm, its 4700ghs and 58 to 60 temperature.  I had bad ghs before and same hw rate as you.  now its 0.0032%.
1963  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitfury: "16nm... sales to public start shortly" on: December 17, 2015, 02:50:37 AM
"shortly" is quite relative....a few months ?  I highly doubt bitfury will do any "gifts" to the general public - that would conflict with their ongoing operation.  they would do like bitmain, and sell at a much higher price equipment that they have been using for a while.

Does anyone have any info on the life span of Antminer S7 Batch 8 or Batch 9?
Or at least approximately

Lifespan in terms of making money or reliability?

I am asking because this is going to be my first miner ever. I am planning on running it 24/7 in a really cold room.
Noise is not a problem. Electricity is $0.089 kW/h.
In my country the average monthly payment for a job is $220... Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy
With my calculations this machine is going to be bringing me around $415 per month and around $330 profit. Break even in 3 months .

Break even will be longer my friend.  But "free" heat is always good no ?  With the difficulty rise, you will make 400, then, 350, then 300 per month (im pulling numbers out of thin air), etc.  But you will make a profit even after halving hopefully, you electricity isnt too bad.  Also consider that you will sell the miner after a while.  How much will it be worth after the halving ?  Hard to say.  Judging from experience, it will retain much of its value.  Its a lot of money (even though some people here dont hesitate to drop 50k on miners...but then again its all re-invested money).  Also dont forget customs and taxes, I had to pay over 300$cad (god damn...).

I just self cleared (acted as my own broker) s7's the other day through customs. You should not have had to pay anything but GST. They fall under a trade deal with preferential countries and have no fees.

really....im in Quebec.  Ill have to look into that, thanks.

it would increase the aftermarket value of B1-7.

One positive way of looking at it I suppose.

Always hate it when manufacturers start saving a few cents in this way. I am assuming it's been driven by the Bean Counters rather than a deliberate attempt to stop people plugging up multiple S7 to a single controller?

Or could mean there is an S7+ on the way?

Rich

Yeah i'm guessing an s7+ is coming end of january/feb, will probably be a monster at 4000w, and you will need 30 pcie cables Tongue

Well in my experience miners run a very long time, 24/7.  Some people have problems, but it seems to be hit or miss.  I've run mine (s1 to s5) for more than a year no problems.  Macedonia eh?  Cool, I've been there once...road trip...nice place, I remember eating at a 5 star restaurant next to a lake, for a couple of bucks...awesome country.  The price doesnt go up with difficulty, but right now it is.  Buying mining equipment is a bit of a gamble, like buying bitcoin I suppose.

You've probably been to Ohrid. It's where I live.
So do you think the bitcoin will rise in the next couple of months?

Yeah I believe we are going into another massive pump...to be followed by a massive dump Smiley

One last question. I just realised the new Batch 9 on the website. How is it any different than the Batch 8?

As Rich said, batch 8 is pretty much the final version of the s7, so batch 9 seems to be the same as batch 8.  But thats a "pre-order" for one month...a lot can happen in one month.

wat the ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ  Batch 9 is out !  Whats this, shipping after jan 20th-30th, and price is 2.54btc.  Ha!  They have quantity discount...order 50 and get....0.01btc off trolololol.  Why dont we just wait for jan 20th, and the price will be much lower I suppose, due to crazy diff increases that are coming...I just dont know what to think about this.

Hello,
I am thinking of overclocking my S7 B6 (4,05TH/s) a bit. Is there a special thread for OC of S7?
If not, what can you recommend? It runs at 41°C while hashing at a Frequency of 600.
Thank you and kind regards

You should overclock to a frequency where you get > 0.001 % AND < 0.005 % HW error. (between 0.001% and 0.005%)
This will allow you to get the best hashrate for your voltage.

I have a batch 8, I find its pretty picky.  change fan speed and all goes to hell.  hw goes up, sometimes i get x's for some chips.  at 3600rpm I seem to get close to 4700ghs, with 0.002-0.005 hw error rate.  So far, the way to go is:  find a setting that works, and dont ever touch that thing again.  temps are around 52-55c.  Anybody has a batch 8 that can help out with settings ?  I'd like to put fan speed back down to 35%, but then I get 4550-4600ghs with 62-66c temps.
1972  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: December 14, 2015, 05:04:59 PM
Get a single rail PSU if you go ATX, 1600w evga is the best.  Batch 8 seems to pull a little more than 1300w....maybe underclock and get evga 1300w.  Also with the 1300w you dont have enough pci cables, so its gonna be 2x per blade...1600w you have more than enough.

edit:  Lepa has multiple rails and only 6 slots for pci cables...now with the double cables you get 10 total but I dont think plugging a double ended cable is a good idea.  maybe someone could chip in on this.
1973  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: $1500 budget, im torn in choices on miners on: December 14, 2015, 02:27:45 PM
you may be better off with s5.  Just consider resale value too - what will an s5 be worth after halving ?  s7 ?
1974  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 21 cents per kw, Any way to mine? on: December 14, 2015, 02:25:47 PM
thats too expensive.  I'm sorry.  You could get a antminer s7, but you would have to sell it in 6 months.  You could make a profit, probably break even, but 21 cents...ouch.  Maybe you can buy it, and host it somewhere for a lot cheaper.  (do a lot of research first).
1975  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Can you solo mine with block eruptor or not? on: December 14, 2015, 02:24:38 PM
Yeah...hmmm...one block eruptor...you have one chance every 10 minutes (aproximately)..one chance in many billion.

So yeah there is a chance, but unlikely in your lifetime, your childrens lifetime and their childrens lifetimes.  BUT there is a chance, so why not ?  point that stick at solo ckpool, its like a very, very bad lotto ticket.
1976  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: December 13, 2015, 10:23:53 PM
I stayed up to read the NEC till 6:30am this morning.  I slept until 2:30pm.  It is 3:30pm now.   Grin

I do not see it written like what prelude provided regarding the "feeder to the breaker.'  However, I do see many references of "...marked 100%."  So, I must conclude 80% is the rule for all Main breakers and other breakers installed in the Main Panel or Sub Panels unless otherwise stated on the breaker that is listed.

Now, I'm going to have to determine [After talking to electrician] if it will be cheaper to have a 700 amp service provided by the power company and installed by the electrician to get what I want [OR] get a 600 amp service with special breakers "marked 100%" in special panels.  I'm not sure which will be cheaper but I will find out and pass that information along in the forum.

Thanks for getting me to investigate this more, Prelude.

Now, back to more reading of the NEC 2015.

David

wouldn't it be easier to tell your electrician your expected load and let him size it. save you the trouble of all the research. it is after all what they do for a living.

Well usually you would go out and buy what your electrician needs to install, if possible.  Or else he goes out and buys it, but why pay someone to shop...and research wires, if you buy wires, most big hardware store sell "recycled" wires (the ones where they cut it for you), which your electrician is not allowed to install in your walls.  Also for the "clips" to hold wires together, get the plastic ones, hardware stores sell metal ones, but they arent good for normal wires.  Basically dont ever take advice from a big box hardware store worker, they dont know shit.

with the current diffiiculty increase they still want to increase S7 price ?
how greedy could they be ?

in the bitcoin world, greed knows no bounds.

S7 Batch 8 report...

I expected it to probably max at 4.7TH but this one touches 5TH frequently

How is this possible?

Running stock firmware at 700mhz

I am using 55% Fan speed because of the whooo... whooo... whooo sound, but this will run it hotter, a bit on high side, almost up to +10%C more than older 600mhz@S7s

Does it have a DC/DC buck converter on it?

No.

How do you know it does not have a Buck Converter? Have you had the covers off and had a look at the Hash Boards?

Rich

I looked with a flashlight, behind the wire coil (on the other side of the board), there are a few small chips and thats pretty much it.  i couldnt see much though.  For people wanting wattage, sorry guys my multimeter is playing hide and seek and I cant find it.   I played with manual fan settings, and the higher the manual fan setting, the higher the hashrate.  for some reason.  doing exactly 4730ghs now at 50%, around 3600 rpm. 0.0082% hw
1980  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: December 10, 2015, 06:25:27 PM
BAck to topic at hand.  Batch 8.  It has arrived, it is plugged in.

REVIEW BATCH 8:
- I like the airplane turbine fans, now I can dry wood, or start an after-flooding disaster company which will dry your house
- manual set at 40%
- Setup is actually a bit of a pain in the ass, as you have to be patient 3-5 minutes for things to update.  soft reset 2-3 times, as one board didnt show up for some reason.
- 4450-4668ghs avg after 5 minutes.
- Fan speed 3360/3240, temps 46 to 49

I'm going to lower the fan speed, see if I can get hashrate up a bit.  So far a bit slower than advertised.  power supply evga g2 1600w on a dedicated 20A 120v circuit with 20A plug.

edit:  3000rpm, 50-53c temps, all is smooth, 4670avg.  so thats pretty much it.  error rate 0.015%  (hw, diffa, diffr)
editedit:  also firmware is from nov 17
