1981  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: 0.0015 BTC if you guess this poker hand right (non poker experts can try). on: November 13, 2022, 10:13:25 AM
I'm not a poker player, by far. I mean, I think I know the rules, I've played a couple times, but the "chips" were plastics with no value.

I think that BB had 77 or 99 and started small to lure as many people and money he can into the game.
My vote goes for 99 (to have only one guess).
1982  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2022-11-03] Plans Now Let Workers Put Retirement Money Into Cryptocurrency on: November 13, 2022, 09:38:26 AM
You could argue that BTC is "on sale" right now.  For X money you are buying more coins than last year.  This all depends upon your risk adversity and where you think coin value will be long term.

Even more, the lower the price is, the bigger the chance it won't go much lower. So buying now can be a very good business.
However, this is arguably more a Speculation than being on-topic...
1983  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum 4.3.2 - Two-factor authentication that has never been set up (no seed) on: November 13, 2022, 09:31:31 AM
I should add that I don't have a seed! And I do have the password for my wallet.

* As said, a wallet doesn't turn to 2FA wallet just like that. However, if you've made tests and now opened a test wallet, or the wallet file got corrupted for whatever reason, I don't know...
* No matter how you created your wallet, Electrum pretty much force you write the seed and re-enter it to continue. So, if that wallet is indeed yours, maybe you think a bit deeper and find those seed words; then you can restore your wallet from seed.

1985  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Access to Ledger Nano S (2018 version) without PIN? on: November 13, 2022, 08:42:06 AM
Reply from SatoshiLabs:
Hacking other companies' HW wallets is not our company's focus. We are also not able to provide you with any contacts for any subjects that deal with this because we simply don't have them.

Completely understandable.

Well, I've tried. Sorry that the idea was not as good as I hoped...

Maybe you could concentrate on finding flaws in that secure chip instead of telling that you're targeting exactly a Ledger device; if you tell about Ledger some may not help you because it can cause them bad publicity (bad actors vs the competition).
But yeah, make your own decisions, my ideas are not always great. Sad
1986  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining in my backyard vs Hosted mining on: November 11, 2022, 02:20:18 PM
Which one is better: Mining at my own place or hosted mining (For a newbie)?

I will start with the fact that in both cases you have to know very good what you're doing. Hosted mining can easily scam you, since you never touch the actual miner; and if you by chance thought on cloud mining, that's scam from start.
Then, mining at home depends on the electricity prices in the fist place then on the fact the miner should stay in a cool, dry and clean place, with very good power wiring, good internet and, if it's too close to you then you may need to also handle the noise. Plus you have to research and learn a little, but people around here will help you with that part.
1987  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Server Problems on: November 11, 2022, 12:06:45 PM
Sorry but In this case you are openly supporting ledger partnership with centralized exchanges like FTX and Binance, and this topic is not misleading anyone, it's created for ledger server issues.

You can draw whatever odd conclusion suits you.
I just tried to warn you to improve the wording you've used, but yeah, do as you want.
1988  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Server Problems on: November 11, 2022, 11:02:14 AM
Better think about this next time you withdraw your coins to ledger hardware wallet thinking they are safu.

Only Binance is safU. But withdrawing to your address is safe. I know you are anti-Ledger, I know that they've made many mistakes, but now you are just misleading newbies (they may think that the CEX is safer than a HW!?!)
Even if Ledger server is not working, one can use his Ledger with Electrum.
Even if Ledger HW stops working, as long as he keeps the seed safely, his funds are OK and can be spent either from a new hardware wallet, either by making a cold storage (maybe with some help), or even with a hot wallet, although I don't recommend the last option.
1989  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: A lil trouble in staking an address on: November 11, 2022, 08:37:06 AM
I honestly don't know the proceedings on how to stack an address for extra security, can anyone help out?
Yeah, I'd need to sign a message using urhhhhh....kleopatra? What? I'm lost.

I guess that you've badly mixed up some things.
Kleopatra is great for verifying your Electrum download, to make sure you won't be using a malicious clone.

If you use Electrum, it's easy. First step is to pick an address from your wallet, for that you should start with View->Show Addresses and pick an address from the Addresses tab (maybe label it too, to know which one you've used). Then in Tools->Sign/Verify message you will fill the address and the message you want (usually containing your bitcointalk name and the date of signing). Press sign, you'll obtain the signature.

The format to post it is in the previous post.

Edit: an image for you, maybe it helps

1990  Economy / Exchanges / Re: This seem like the only solution for cex now on: November 11, 2022, 08:16:11 AM
now publishing their proof of reserves, what do you think about this idea?

Will this work at all or will fail over time? Drop your 💡.

It's a great advertising in order to keep people's trust in CEXs, not much else.
But really, it's not that difficult to do business by handing over private keys to this or that entity, do some crap and, although the CEX shows healthy proof of reserves, those could belong, by contract, to somebody else.
Also, of course, by doing this they can make their addresses targets for hackers - and I don't mean the bitcoin network here.

So yes, it can easily fail. Take all the public info with a grain of salt and trust no one but yourself.
1991  Economy / Speculation / Re: All Assets are seized for FTX... Its over! on: November 11, 2022, 07:46:09 AM
Does this mean binance have screwed themselves over by another investment considering they were planning to keep selling ftt and I doubt they dumped all their coins on the market by this time.

They will recover those loses in no time from BNB (if they didn't already) and they've got rid of a (malicious!) big competitor, which, if left unharmed for 1 more year (maybe 2) could have been taking over the role of "biggest crypto exchange".
It looks like a good (great!) business from second one. I think that those FTT were especially kept for this long as ... "insurance", i.e. for ... what has happened these days.
1992  Economy / Speculation / Re: The most stupid dip in Bitcoin's history - and why we can be happy now on: November 10, 2022, 03:10:50 PM
I call this the most stupid dip in Bitcoin's history (or at least one of the most stupid ones, there may have been others), because the event that triggered it was actually positive.

I tend to agree on this. People started panicking for... this, but.. some ideas:
* I agree that Binance not buying FTX is positive
* Binance not buying FTX was actually a normal/expected development
* removing one tumor out of the ecosystem should be a net positive
* I think that some big players decided to take advantage of the uncertain sentiment given by the fall of FTX and so many people probably losing money
* this leg down was expected by some in order to have a similar-to-previous-ones end of crypto winter (I hoped we won't get there)

However, I tend to HOLD and see what happens. We're still in the bear market, whether we like or not, whether we hoped or not that it has ended already.
1993  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Exchangers Are safer then Banks and wallets on: November 10, 2022, 02:59:07 PM
Worse, you're talking to the new polo7 and 325btc clones, when they taking a break and are not talking to each other.

Interesting. Then we have a ban evader.
I've added him to my ignore list and will also report him.
1994  Economy / Exchanges / Re: FTX issue might be for the greater good on: November 10, 2022, 02:55:39 PM
The FTX exchange fund mismanagement might actually be a good thing

Every kick in the ass makes you go one step forward. Is that I good thing? Well.. it's debatable.
As said, people losing money is not a good thing, even if he signs were there (not your keys, not your coins) and they just failed to see them.

Consumers' protection should have been first for many years, still, taking (unnecessarily high) risks in the name of profit is not new and I fear it won't stop this easy.
People still open businesses under various jurisdictions they can play people's money with no big repercussions.

Even SMF tells now that USA customers will be OK, while the rest of the world... pretty much bad luck. Why that? Maybe because USA is one of the few regions SBF is afraid of the law?
1995  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Copying Bet From Other Unknown Bettors, Is This a Good Practice? on: November 10, 2022, 02:36:01 PM
So for you, is copying bets online a good practices?

Imho it's not. You just blindly trust a random person's picks and you don't know if that person knows the game(s) or not. You can as well just play dice.
If you know the games and can take a look if those bets do make sense, maybe - but then you can do without looking what others do.
So no, I think that it's not a good practice.
1996  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Exchangers Are safer then Banks and wallets on: November 10, 2022, 02:26:55 PM
Nothing wrong with Fiat as long as they print it and give to me Smiley

And you're wrong again. A lot is wrong with fiat (it's an overly manipulated and inflationary IOU that is based on you trusting on institutions that are not as trustable as they are advertised). But I seem to talk with walls, so I let you in your dream world.
1997  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Exchangers Are safer then Banks and wallets on: November 10, 2022, 02:15:59 PM
Crypto refunds are more easy they can create coin

I don't know, maybe Binance can create BNB, maybe FTX could create FTT. But they cannot create Bitcoin, they cannot create Ethereum, they cannot care the honest valuable coins. They're not central banks and the coins are not just "printed paper". That's why we are leaving the fiat behind.
Even more, if they do create their (shit)coins out of thin air to pay their customers, those coins will become worthless as soon as people find out.
1998  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Exchangers Are safer then Banks and wallets on: November 10, 2022, 02:01:38 PM
Well we all know much now FTX people will get refund so yes safe

Sorry to say, but people's wishes is not what reality is. As much as I hope FTX will refund, I fear that the chances that not to happen are... increasingly high.

Exchangers like binance Are safer then banks and walllets.
Becouse If something happens they always refund losses.

Actually there were plenty of cases there were no refunds, even in the more recent history.
Even more, at least in Europe the banks are regulated and the deposits until 100k EUR are refunded by the state, no matter what. By the law. This doesn't happen with exchanges and they will refund only if they can (not insolvent) and want to (eg if not under some odd jurisdiction they can get away without paying).

Binance have done this many times and i know there someone to watch over my wealth.

Binance is one of the exchanges. For now, they did refund and this increased their popularity. What will happen in the future or with other exchanges... I would not take chances.

Private wallets they can be hacked but nobody dont refund.

Private wallets are ... private responsibility. Even if you're not tech inclined you can buy a hardware wallet and your funds are pretty much safe (unless you publish online the backup seed).

We live of generation of refund, in crypto main thing Are refund what i did learn about.

You live in a dream world. I wish your dreams come true, but I fear that if you continue on this path, sooner or later a cold shower awaits you.
1999  Economy / Economics / Re: How much longer until paper money is no longer in circulation? on: November 10, 2022, 01:20:30 PM
CBDCs will not replace fully the paper money. They just can't. And not all governments will issue CBDCs.
It will take more generations until paper money gets phased out, if ever. There are still many people who don't use technology, there are still many regions not covered with internet; those just cannot go without an offline currency.

That's what I've thought. But if governments are keen into pushing digital payments, then they're going to have to provide the necessary tools to make it happen. I believe the transition from physical to digital Fiat will be a slow one as not everyone is used to credit/debit cards or even in-app purchases. As you've said before, there are many people without access to the Internet. Not only that, but there are old people who don't like to use anything else other than paper money to pay for goods and services. Governments who issue CBDCs are going to have to experiment with it for a while before the transition is 100% complete.

Of course they're pushing it. Paper money needs printing almost continuously. There are always banknotes that get damaged and they'll get burned (or melted) and replaced with new ones. That costs money.
If they manage to reduce the amount of "paper" money needed to stay in circulation to half, they will save a lot of money from this cycle.

Then, obviously, digital money - no matte it's banks, visa or CBDCs - it's easy to track.
And, as we already know, CBDCs will probably also be easy to freeze or seize, giving governments even more power.

But, by the law (or possibly the constitution?), the government has to ensure each and every citizen has access to the money. And if internet and technology is not available.. phasing out paper money will be illegal/unconstitutional. Simple.
2000  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: I talked with very smart person he told me about crypto people need to know on: November 09, 2022, 03:18:09 PM
People he told me that people don't understood
The binance is bigger then Goldman sacxh or Banks.
And bigger then goverments.
[~snip~]
That's why binance always will reinburse losses in crypto.

Actually this is one of the reasons why they may not reimburse if it's the case. If they're so big and powerful, then nobody can force them, right?
Plus, if they get badly hacked (i.e. somebody from inside gets to steal the keys of the cold storage), they get so badly fucked they will have no chance to reimburse.
Plus, you don't know if they are working on real funds or have ongoing debts and/or leverage (like FTX had to look bigger than they are).

So better keep at any exchange only the bare minimum for your needs and never forget the "not your keys, not your coins" mantra. You never know when shit happens and it's best if it doesn't happen to you.
