2021  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Coinbase Warning !!! on: February 27, 2013, 08:20:48 PM
If it is all done by computer, they need to say that.

Every financial institution has these algorithms to determine transaction risk.

The algorithm should be giving a go / no go decision at the time the order is place or the results communicated within a few hours.   Not right before the expected delivery time [Edit: six days later].

Coinbase is a private company and can provide whatever approach to the service they want, but implementing a system that essentially could be a "heads we win, tails you lose" will not yield favorable reviews.   Just because it is an algorithm screwing you doesn't mean you should put up with it.

But HappyScam, if you contact CoinBase they may be willing to figure something out for you.

2025  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Moneypak for bitcoins HELP! on: February 27, 2013, 07:34:08 PM
how can I get in contact with the people who work with MP?

If you still have the receipt for when you purchased the Moneypak and it shows that you paid cash for it then you might be willing to find someone who will trade with you on the #bitcoin-otc marketplace.

There's a little legwork involved to use that for trading as you need to set up GPG first, then register your GPG key with the #bitcoin-otc bot gribble which lets you authenticate and use the #bitcoin-otc IRC channel.
2026  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Moneypak for bitcoins HELP! on: February 27, 2013, 07:30:21 PM
I recently bought a greendot moneypak card and put $280 on it thinking I would be able to immediately buy bitcoins with it. But instead, I cannot find anywhere I can buy any bitcoins with it if anyone is interested in the money on the greendot money pak card for bitcoins and wants to help me out it would be greatly appreciated

The least expensive way to recover might be to pick up a prepaid debit card (either a Green Dot one, or Walmart moneycard, etc.), and register it, deposit that MoneyPak into it, then use the card at an ATM to withdraw the cash back out.

Then use a cash deposit method to buy your coins.  For instance, BitMe offers a cash deposit method (at any Chase branch), BitFloor too (at any Bank of America branch), and ZIGGAP (Western Union), and BitInstant (7-11, Walmart, CVS, Moneygram).
2027  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Vouchers on: February 27, 2013, 07:22:28 PM
So I had an idea where if you are selling bitcoins fiat and you want to get "back into bitcoins" at some point and don't want to go through all the hassle of getting money in that you could buy BTC Voucher/MtGox Voucher to redeem for Bitcoins. Is this a good service idea?

You mean like a scratch-off card you might buy at the convenience store?

That's kind of like what BitInstant offers.
You deposit a little over $100 in cash and $100 worth of funds appear in your account at MTGUSD.

Mt. Gox doesn't offer anything like this directly.

This is different from selling bitcoins because in this case you are providing a service for transmitting dollars.   That's a regulated activity.

BitInstant is a registered money service business, and doing that has costs that are not trivial.

You as an individual can easily find people willing to exchange to and from MTGUSD redeemable codes on the #bitcoin-otc marketplace, for

2028  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Monitor Bitcoin transactions (live) on: February 27, 2013, 06:50:45 PM
does anyone know a way, to monitor transactions live?

The Bitcoin.org client API has listsinceblock which lets you poll for new transactions.

BitcoinJ provides a callback, I believe.

You might also look at the BitsOfProof project:

Could a bitcoin client be done in javascript,

Yes.

http://Blockchain.info/wallet and Strongcoin are two Javascript-based wallets that do all the crypto in Javascript on the browser.  http://brainwallet.org/#tx would be such a client too I suppose.  They do send the transaction to a hosted service which then broadcasts the transaction.

using WebGL to access the GPU for processing/mining?

As a neat idea, yes that could be (and has been) done.

As a business proposition.  Bad idea.  Read up on ASICs.

2030  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Unclaimed bitcoins......... on: February 27, 2013, 06:30:31 PM
I just find it interesting with so many ways to handle bitcoins what are the possible ways to account for or exercise those coins?

Well, inactive accounts are just that, inactive.  The customer still owns the funds.

The hosted (shared) EWallet provider can't know which customers lost their URL, but can know how many bitcoins are held by customer accounts that have become inactive.

At some point the EWallet provider might be tempted to use those funds (e.g., lend them out), but who knows.   I suppose if the terms of service change at some point the user has the option of withdrawing those funds and anyone who no longer has access to the account (e.g., forgot, died, or lost the URL) then those funds could change hands after some reasonable period of time passes.

The golden rule -- those with the gold make the rules.   In bitcoin EWallets, you are voluntarily handing your money over to someone else to hold.  If you don't take care of your money, someone else will.  Happens all the time .... like this:

2031  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: SatoshiDICE Double Spend on: February 27, 2013, 06:00:23 PM

Well, you are using funds that haven't confirmed and spending them.

The Bitcoin.org client (e.g., Bitcoin-Qt) won't let you do that but some other clients (like Blockchain.info/wallet) give you more rope with which to hang yourself.

And [Edit: one of] your transactions attempting to spend those previously spent funds now will never confirm.  And as such your transactions [edit: one transaction] will eventually disappear as if they were never made.

But also what will disappear are the double spend transactions that were sent to you.

If those came from SatoshiDICE, then they will eventually send a replacement payment.

[Edit: One of those two transactions you listed (70c99e6609730a8782c4b7a0fd3f27229d623abb473b42efee39b3e3953ce50b) has confirmations, so the other (b07b875e687891f4b9a1efab802ee08e5c869e3368fc3ab9f753f1fd7432a819) is the only one that has a parent which is a double spend.

As far as why 16a58f5eaa5c4750403e7ca505b4d84832a9041ba414ce7e67b056d325e927c9 isn't confirming, that isn't because of a double spend.  Instead it is probably because it is "spam-like".  There are "dust amounts" in it (e.g., below 0.01 BTC), the total size is over 10KB, and it probably spends funds that were just recently confirmed (i.e., in the past day).   A higher fee might have helped get that in a block sooner.   Using the "Custom" feature of Blockchain.info/wallet and choosing coins that have confirmations would have been another method to avoid this (or use the Bitcoin.org client and this probably would never have happened in the first place.) ]

tl;dr: What do you do now?  You wait for some miner to include 16a58f5eaa5c4750403e7ca505b4d84832a9041ba414ce7e67b056d325e927c9 in a block -- it could be up to a day or so.  And you stop messing around with SatoshiDICE using the same wallet that you use for payments in which you want transactions to confirm in a timely manner.
2032  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Building and Hosting a BTC Site Anonymously on: February 27, 2013, 04:06:49 AM
if one needs to be fully sure they are in control of the finances and not liable to being hacked what are the options? My guess to this one is too completely separate the customers BTC wallets from the site itself and try to keep them hidden but I am not very knowledgeable on the subject,

So this isn't just something like an online E-commerce site?   A site that simply sells something is not too difficult to operate anonymously and do so securely as the site itself handles no finances.

Instead if you are providing a hosted (shared) EWallet for your customers (e.g., like the balance for a wallet used for placing bets) then security is a much more complex task.  See:

So you think you're going to start a Bitcoin business, right?

2033  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is anyone else experiencing very slow blockchain movement right now? on: February 27, 2013, 03:38:10 AM
my question was exactly what I wanted answered.

So then you need to determine, are blocks confirming slowly or is it that your transactions are just not confirming promptly.   Looking at the timestamps, blocks are coming along recently at above the average rate (shorter than 10 minutes) likely thanks to higher mining capacity, so that's not your problem.

If your transactions are not confirming, even with a fee, then it is simply the miners not including your transaction.

There are reasons this occurs.  If you are trying to re-spend funds that you just recently received (i.e., in the past day), then that subtracts from the chances it will get processed promptly.    The prescribed approach is to pay a higher fee if your transactions aren't confirming promptly.  [Edit: But even that isn't a guarantee to get your transaction included promptly.]

Also, if you are using a client that will spend unconfirmed funds, that's also going to work against you if confirmation needs to occur promptly.  Blockchain.info/wallet is one such client.    Bitcoin-Qt won't send a payment unless the funds needed already have at least one confirmation.

[Edit: Looking at your post history, I'm suspecting you are sending transactions with spend amounts (outputs) that are under 0.01 BTC, and/or your transaction size is above 10KB. If either is true, the miners, when determining which transactions to include for the scarce resource limits for each block, will bump your transaction to "the back of the line".]

There are several threads about how to get more women on board with Bitcoin.

Here's an example of our typical demographic representation:

2037  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is anyone else experiencing very slow blockchain movement right now? on: February 27, 2013, 02:29:17 AM
I tried to send some bitcoins over an hour and a half ago and they are still unconfirmed. Is anyone else having any problems in their latest transactions?

About once every other day on average it will take an hour between block confirmations.   So a half hour happens daily at least, if not multiple times per day.

But even though blocks are being solved doesn't mean your transaction will get included in the next block.

A fee might need to be paid for the transaction to be included.   Or if there are many transactions those with higher fees will be included and those with a lower fee will need to wait a little longer.    If your transaction is spammy (low amount, no fee) it may take a day or longer for the transaction to get included in a block.

Also, most services require six confirmations, so even if your transaction is included in a block right away, it won't get credited until there are six confirmations -- which, on average, is an hour after the first confirmation occurs.
