This strongly depends on a combination of which side you are on plus the level of knowledge you can call your own

I think I found a bot on an exchange which is used for driving the price up or down without creating much volume. Fun thing is: you can use the bot yourself to make it close gaps in the order book (keep the transaction fee plus the ~1% profitability many bots reserve for trading in mind). When the gaps are somewhat closed, further trading is triggered (not sure yet if that's also bots).

Funny how they test lower/higher orders (if they differ something about 100sat from the previous highest/lowest order) with micro trades to see if the order disappears. If it doesn't, they'll go higher/lower. A bit smarter than a year ago.
What's really dumb (even if it's supposedly only one bot overbidding you): once it placed its order, you can safely remove your order. It won't even check the gap to the next highest/lowest orders, so it could place a more profitable order.

The guys who programmed those bots should really be dickslapped (thanks, YourMother, for this vocab) all day long. Or, on the other hand, they should be rewarded for being clever and releasing really, really bad trading software to the public, so they can benefit from it themselves. ^^

...or short: "k" (non capital) for "kilo" = 1000.

If one becomes a bit more experienced, faith in an asset won't matter that much anymore. Then, all of a sudden, everything only becomes a matter of observation (when doing low volume trading) or manipulation (with high volume). Two counterparties facing each other every day in crypto, each trying to benefit from the other one.
The one being more clever/forsightful wins the race. That's usually the high volume guy, because he got his high volume from former experience. High volume guys who got their fortune due to a lucky earlier investment usually become low volume guys as time goes by, the reasons being greed and a total lack of knowledge, sometimes coupled with a stubborn refusal to gather any knowledge at all.
Only the smartest low volume guys will be able to recognize the patterns over a longer period of time to actually profit from the high volume guys. Easiest explanation would be: if it wasn't this way, the high volume guys would have stopped playing the markets a long time ago. Without experience, it's a gamble and nothing more.

Well, the obvious and short answer would be: making money.
If you take a look at the 2 recent spikes on cryptsy (1d chart), you'll notice that their way of progression is very similar. And cryptsy's chart is full of such spikes. They don't look that much same-ish like the last two, but the pattern is always roughly the same.
I wouldn't bet my ass for this being a bot, because I could not clearly relate the price in-/decreases to a certain time (most bots are coded as sloppy as fuck and if you read and understand the code, it's [or it was... got a bit better] easy to determine their timeframe of action, meaning building and analyzing indicators, so you can do the same [e.g. with EMA 9/20 when the bot uses EMA 10/21, so you're a bit earlier to detect the signals] and e.g. buy before they finished and then sell on their sorry asses like every hour or so).

I don't know if the volume of CLOAK is really that much manipulated, because if it was, that would mean that one (or a couple of) person(s) patched the orderbook with his/their own orders all the way along, making small buys from himself and others while removing parts of his sell orders and thus pushing the price up with little money.
When the price has reached a good value, other buyers (don't know yet if it's the usual "buy high, sell low" type of guys or another manipulation; perhaps a mix of both) step in (you can clearly see this if you watch the usual price increases... I'm working in home office, so i can always have a short look on my charts screen) and when there are enough of them, the selloff begins. Last two spikes on cryptsy was where I watched this yesterday, for example.

Currently, I'm accumulating historical trade data from cryptsy. I'm writing a tool which should provide all the tools I'm missing on the existing ones, meaning not only showing data from past trades/volume etc, but also analyzing it, so the correlations between volume, timeframes and price fluctuations become directly visible using charts, graphs and tables.
Sadly this takes a lot of time to finish (finally using good programming techniques like OOP and MVC, separate Backend and Frontend), so I'm collecting the data I need, spend time in coding when I can and hopefully someday, it will turn out useful and help to see things how they are. Because I'm quite certain that exchanges intentionally only provide a minimal set of features, whereas it is VERY easy to provide way more information and analysis if you already have a JavaScript charting library integrated.

A bot was my thought, too. Since weeks, almost months i watch this behavior, and I'm constantly comparing charts, trade times and source code of more or less known trading bots and engines, being constantly sleep deprived and doing my own analysis and coding, trying to figure out the weak points of that system. I think, I'm getting closer. Or I might just be hallucinating. ^^

I constantly wonder how they're doing this. CLOAK went up almost 1/3rd of its previous price with literally no volume. On Cryptsy. I don't get it.

... but you do realize that an RSI on a 15min chart is in no way suitable to determine whether an asset is oversold or not, don't you? ^^

Yeah, it's only people with money who want to make others believe that the price is influenced by news (oldest trick ever: use news to push the price higher than your budget allows for). Remember February this year and later when a fuckton of shops and services started accepting Bitcoin payments? The price did barely move... Remember the last implementations of features in cloak? The price even dropped.

News and features are irrelevant, at least short term. They're only important for those moving the market. Sad but true.

Also, flashbit, it's not that you're known for your correct predictions about the price. No pun intended.

To be honest: I don't see things the way you do. In my opinion, the payments for the posts is just a little extra you can get for posting and I really don't see the PD team in the responsibility to notify everyone who is affected (I found it out right now after coming back from holidays and I'm affected, too). Otherwise, the forum's quality would suffer.
Also (and I really don't want to sound like ascribing things to you of which I don't know if they're true), "claiming" the coins the way you did really sounds a bit like you're only posting here for the advertisement, regardless of the topic.

Whatever, if you only invested half of the energy you used for writing FUD posts and showing us how how scruffy your vocabulary is to actually learn something about trading (and using the knowledge), you'd have at least half (if not all or even more) of your lent money still (or again) in your pockets.

I also "lost" money (bought at 250-300k sat), but due to continuous trading, my loss is nowhere near the 5% the price went to. Actually, my losses are almost covered.
