It will be a difficult for bitcoin skeptic to stop being the center of attention

Indeed. And, as I said, I think that he's posing as "bitcoin skeptic" on purpose. It's an advertising strategy.

Yes, he is but I don't know how true it is as he claimed to have lost access to his last holding of Bitcoin because of a corrupted wallet.

Oh, interesting. I didn't know that he has ever admitted to own bitcoin. And about the corrupted wallet, if it's for real, I feel sorry for him. But I still can't think.. hmm.. it sounds more a very convenient mishap (for both his skeptic stance and also for hiding some funds)

I've received my prize and I can say it looks great and professional, much better than a camera can show it (it's very shiny).

(I've blurred this or that for privacy)

Thanks again for the prize and also great job Cygan for the professional manufacturing and shipping too.

Why should I excuse or forgive

I've seen some of your posts and was kind of surprised by the way you see the things.

But this topic shows clearly, if it was still needed, the true you.
Sadly.
284  Economy / Economics / Re: A person that is against the creation of CBDC. on: January 20, 2024, 03:20:32 PM
the voters should take into account what is important for them and whether it was done in the previous mandate or not, not the lies from campaign.
I'd say the real question voters should ask themselves is why should their choices be between Biden and Trump anyway? Two elderly men who don't know what they're doing half the time. Can't they really come up with anybody better in a country with 330+ million?!!!

The reason is simple; people are too "lulled" to do anything, which is why nothing changes in systems like what we see in America. Otherwise if they wanted to "make America great again" for real, they would have changed the corrupt system instead of trying to install this old man or that old man into office every 4 year into the same broken system.

This problem is there in pretty much all democracies. You have the right to vote, but you don't really have any proper choices to actually vote well.
And then yes, the equation comes down to two elderly men and very few others that actually don't stand a chance because their campaigns are underfunded and people don't get to hear about them.
Plus, a president has pretty limited powers actually...

However, you've missed my point, so I'll explain it better: did Trump done anything good for the (specific) voters? did Biden do? If so, there's some ground for a second chance for them. No? Then give a serious look to the other competitors.
285  Economy / Speculation / Re: 0.618 fib retracement @ $48.5K achieved: Is this is the local top? on: January 19, 2024, 06:10:04 PM
I guess target 37k for the downside then maybe we can build from there, I dont know it's that neat or not.

I was expecting 37k before the ETF get announced. Now the quantities bought should start increasing (+/- some weeks because of buffers/stashes).
I don't know about OP's 20-30k, for me 35k would be a bit under the comfort zone. Imho the ETF and the nearing halving should not allow going that low, but I am not that good at this. I also expect the month end at a small plus compared to 1 jan.

Imho before or at halving we should get above this number.
286  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [Bounty Inside] Restoring an electrum seed phrase into another wallet on: January 19, 2024, 05:54:34 PM
Since you quoted o_e_l_e_o, I will also do so. I don't know if this counts (although it's a minor change of the most well known bip39 software), but I've kept a bookmark to this quote for the case I ever have problems or I have to help anybody recover his coins from an Electrum seed:

There is no need to back up your master private key or individual private keys from an Electrum wallet.

You could use any old copy of Electrum software to restore an Electrum seed phrase and extract the relevant private keys. Even if the devs abandon the project, the GitHub disappears, and your own devices are destroyed, there are thousands of people who would pretty quickly upload copies of the Electrum code for other people to download.

Even if no one did that, you can use any open source piece of software with two very minor changes as explained by pooya87 above to restore an Electrum seed phrase. For example, with https://github.com/iancoleman/bip39, simply open src/js/jsbip39.js, change line 116 to return true; and at line 144 change the word "mnemonic" to the word "electrum". The derivation paths will be different (m/0 for legacy and m/0'/0 for segwit), but it will generate your Electrum addresses just fine.
287  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2024-01-18] Peter Schiff Predicts Bitcoin Bloodbath — Expects SEC Chair ... on: January 19, 2024, 05:45:38 PM
5 plus years on and Peter still stews nonsense about bitcoin despite the glaring evidences against his false and incorrect claims.

All that nonsense is imho on purpose: keeps this guy in the center of attention, helping him advertise the crap he cares about (and actually Bitcoin too!)
Plus, I tend to believe that he is invested into Bitcoin, just doesn't admit it. Else he would not be that much aware of all that's happening around Bitcoin.
288  Economy / Economics / Re: A person that is against the creation of CBDC. on: January 19, 2024, 05:41:35 PM
Don't take what politicians say in their advertising campaigns too seriously.

This really sums it up. Politicians lie for living and do that even more when they advertise themselves for the votes.
Trump has lied about things more important, so hissince probably somebody else wrote that for him, is it really his? statement is worthless.
But I too don't count as a voter. He did good things, he did bad things, the voters should take into account what is important for them and whether it was done in the previous mandate or not, not the lies from campaign.

290  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Which crypto wallet to use for 8,000$? on: January 18, 2024, 07:06:31 PM
I also recommend a hardware wallet. This website has quite a comprehensive comparison: https://thebitcoinhole.com/hardware-wallets

I have, but no longer use, a Ledger, I recommend you find something else.
Trezor is one of the oldest, hence it has passed the test of time.
Coldcard and Passport are solid choices. However, I think that you should go for one that's open source and 100% airgapped, at least. Plus, read for others' opinions too.

Stay safe and make sure the backup seed you'll also keep safe, as multiple copies in multiple locations.
291  Economy / Reputation / Re: Farewell on: January 18, 2024, 06:56:10 PM
Without giving away too much personal info, I have a chronic disease. I've had this disease for a decade and have had a lot of treatment for it, but it is winning. I likely only have a few months left. And so, I bid you all farewell. I'll be spending as much of my remaining time as possible with my family. In a week or two, once this thread has run its course, I'll ask theymos to lock this account.

I have learnt a lot from many of you, and I hope many of you have learnt something from me. Although we will never meet, I would have loved to share a beer with many of you, and I hope you'll remember me fondly.

Leo

What an incredibly sad news!   Shocked Cry

I've always valued your posts, they were always smart and useful. The forum will clearly be poorer without you. The world too, I am sure. I somehow hope this is not for real...

I can guess that this will sound a bit lame, but get the best of everything, as long as you can and.. maybe, just maybe this is either not for real, either you have better chances than you think now...
Maybe, just maybe, we'll still meet someday for that beer. And if not... maybe we'll drink that on the other side.  Cry

292  Other / Off-topic / Re: Job for others country! on: January 18, 2024, 06:43:43 PM
I made translations for people on this forum I don't know what countries they were from. And got paid in bitcoin.
Can I ask how you landed those translation jobs? I'd be interested to do the same.

I've started many years ago with translating this or that altcoin or service announcement. Most of those jobs were made for a small fee. And they also helped me build up a portfolio.
My portfolio even contains proof reading the translation for Bitcoin whitepaper!

I've posted my portfolio in the translators related pages/topics on this forum and got contacted now and then. As simple as that.

This is the theory. In reality it depends on your language; for some of them there seem to be more translators than job offers nowadays (of course, more research, better portfolio, lower price can give you an edge even where there's competition)
293  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Times 03/Jan/2009 - High quality image? on: January 15, 2024, 07:36:27 PM
The only idea I have on the matter is to try to use one of the free AI web tools on the internet and increase + enhance one of the freely available images like

294  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin EFTs are bad for Bitcoin as a decentralized digital currency. on: January 15, 2024, 07:26:17 PM
They have turned a potential threat to their control into a profit making opportunity and the people who it was meant to help don't realize it.

I do realize that.

But sadly most people are unable to acquire bitcoin - too poor, too uninformed/disinformed and so on. And also sadly, even here, where some of us may know this or that, the vast majority is in for the money, not for the tech, not even for the freedom it was supposed to bring.

I think that Hal was one of the first ones realizing that Bitcoin can easily become a reserve currency instead of a currency for the mases.

So let's see:
* banks are evil - we know that
* ETFs give money to banks and wall street, but also make Bitcoin scarcer for future buyers - we expect that, but wait, this might also make us rich and also might stabilize the price. Interestingly this didn't concern you.
* ETFs will keep a huge amount of bitcoins under centralized storage, while some companies will buy IOUs for getting richer. Should I care about them, as long as I can buy actual Bitcoin and keep in my own wallet?!!
295  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Xmr mixed with Btc, good idea? on: January 15, 2024, 07:12:57 PM
but I don't quite understand OP's precis of "mixing" bitcoin and monero

In my head it was either this, either a proposal for a new coin, which I rejected. Some may think that if you make a new coin with 21m cap it will reach to Bitcoin price, strength and usefulness in a month. Of course, that's not going to happen. However, there's indeed a chance I misunderstood what OP meant, hence maybe OP comes back and tells more...

XMR, and ROI-wise, it isn't as though it hasn't performed well over the years

Well, if you look at XMR-USD chart, especially for the last 18 months, you may find it... less depressing  Wink
296  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin EFTs are bad for Bitcoin as a decentralized digital currency. on: January 15, 2024, 06:56:14 PM
Remember "Not your keys, not your coins"?  Bitcoin was intended as a decentralized digital currency.

A good and simple tool can always be used for its intended purpose and for other things too.

We will emphasize here "not your keys, not your coins".
Others will prefer going through Wall Street companies because that's how they know to invest into this. It's suboptimal, but it's not prohibited. It will be interesting to watch what happens when first of these will get a hack or something, but on the other hand, don't we already have a long history of exchange hacks and people keeping their coins at exchanges? So.. let's just stay real, OK?
297  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Xmr mixed with Btc, good idea? on: January 15, 2024, 06:50:20 PM
bitcoin mixed with the xmr ecosystem

If you mean using exchanges (of any kind) for attempting mixing bitcoins, it's pretty easy to do it wrong.

Some of the exchanges may keep logs of the transactions, even they say they don't.
Some of the exchanges may keep logs of the IPs, even they say they don't.

It's not easy to do privacy correctly nowadays for Bitcoin.
My take is that if you indeed want privacy, just stay in Monero ecosystem. If you want to do good investment, use Bitcoin.
If you mix them you can easily get something worse than you'd expect, whether you'll know it or not.
298  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Wallet suggestions? on: January 15, 2024, 06:43:07 PM
What type of virtual wallet do you use? And what are the best ways for me to keep my cryptocurrencies safe?

If you really mean safe you need either cold storage (but that's not that easy to configure properly and use), either hardware wallet.
Even a simple USB stick can do wonders for safe keeping/safely handling your coins... if you have the knowledge for it. But since your money is at a centralized exchange... let's go for a faster and easier route: hardware wallets. They have a big range of prices, it widely depends on how many altcoins you also have and how much you want to pay for the HW. There are plenty of reviews around, you already got a good number of answers.

I want to emphasize something else: it's not enough to just get a safe wallet. It also matters how you store the seed, it matters what other things you do (it's easy to think HW is extremely safe, but you use it with a seed generated online, ie unsafe, or not paying attention to the transactions' addresses and get your money stolen by a clipboard malware).
So take your time and try to learn a little more.
299  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will the bitcoin ETF have any impact on the bitcoin price? on: January 15, 2024, 05:58:35 PM
We can see the price crashing since its release.

Bitcoin has a very long history of very big volatility and everybody who gets scared by that has - sooner or later - very bad days if he goes for investing/holding (pretty much ending with a panic sale).
My advice is always look at the big picture and use your brain.

And about the question in your topic title, my take is: yes, but you may need some time, maybe even weeks or more, to see that happen. And yes, because halving is also near, this may become somewhat fuzzy.
300  Economy / Speculation / Re: back in 2015 we had a nice pre 1/2 ing streak. on: January 15, 2024, 05:44:38 PM
We are not even at half of the month and a lot of things can happen. This may be a pretty much expected bear trap, but somewhat oddly placed (I expected it before the ETF announcements).
I would give it some time - until the end of this month - before getting a conclusion. If the price still goes downwards it's a nice opportunity to buy, if it starts going up... it may go fast!
The chance to end the month still on a positive trend is pretty good.
