3641  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The recent attacks on Bitcoin. Why, and most importantly ~ Who. on: February 16, 2014, 04:41:02 AM

I reason its really just market manipulation, to get the price lower for a little while,

JUST PRIOR TO THE MASSIVE RUN-UP LATER ON THIS YEAR

because bitcoin is growing faster than it ever was

FASTER, BIGGER THAN IT EVER WAS IN 2014

another one of my theories Roll Eyes

Close enough to what I surmised upon only reading the title: Put yourself in an ideal trading position prior to implementing the pseudo-attack on your own entity(s). Hell, it wouldn't surprise me to later learn that Mt Gox withdrew their own coins (and maybe some or all of Bitcoinica's) and put them in some other exchange, perhaps one they help founded. I'm just saying.  Wink

Just a quick question... I paid in bitcoin, IF I were to request a refund would I get back $6000 worth of btc or just my btc back? Seeing as the recent price drop and all....

you are assuming you'll get a refund.  I haven't seen an official statement on this forum that refund requests will be honored, nor heard from anyone that has successfully asked for, and received, a refund.

Of course I could be wrong, but all I've seen to date is for people that want refunds to submit a ticket.

Good luck.  and let us know how it turns out.

It should turn out fine, since there's resellers in place conducting the majority of the sales.

Miner orders from reseller; reseller orders from Black Arrow.
Miner request refund from reseller, and waits till they get to their particular ticket; Reseller submits refund to Black Arrow, and waits till they get to their particular ticket.
Black Arrow can't be sued for not providing a refund to miner because there's no order from them on their books.
All the actors have vetted one another, hence no concerns.

that's me.  head fudster.

last I saw refunds were kinda up in the air.  to this point I have not seen an unequivocal statement one way or the other.

I have not read every post in this thread, nor all them on BA's forum, however, last update I saw was that they were reviewing if they could issue refunds from their margin or some such thing.

Now we all know that margin must be razor thin, what with this well developed and mature market that has had it's margins reduced to shavings of pennies by rabid competition for many years, right?  mmmhmmmm....  Pardon me if I'm a bit skeptical on that particular issue.

seeing as this issue of refunds is a primary concern in all of this for a lot of people I  do wonder why a clear statement hasn't been made.  If it has, I've missed it, so maybe I'm wrong.

I remember post after post about how you guys would not be affected by the CNY, care to comment why "most of the staff" had off when you previously said it wouldn't affect you guys?

Also since a yes or no answer was never given, will minersource be giving refunds, yes or no?

Minersource cannot issue refunds as they have paid us for your miners.

We're currently making a list with the refund requests to see if we can refund from our margin. Note that our margin is quite low as we have charged our customers $4000 on a miner while others have charged $16000 on the same hardware during the same period.

As we've announced, we've put the ASICs into production and they've been paid in full. Canceling the ASIC now is not possible as we will incur around 85 to 95% penalty so we're left in refunding only from our margin.

There's always another way one could request a refund if they don't mind a 10% restocking fee for wasting their time: Claim your order was part of group buy, whereupon since they always abide by their ToS, a refund will be granted.

Quote
Group buys: Group buys are not permitted. We will cancel any order that we discover that is a group buy and will refund the payment minus 10% that we will charge for our time wasted in this matter. By placing an order for this item you agree with the above.

There's always going to be conspiracy theorists with any new technology, and having a killswitch is a logical safety feature, but what does this have to do with Bitcoin?

Nothing, if bitcoins are exchanged worldwide without the use of an internet connection device that could easily have a killswitch installed.

According to minersource, you would only get back the same number of coins you paid. So, you'd lose a lot of the value. Now, if the value of bitcoin was much higher right now, I think they'd probably be more than happy to give you back less coins to adjust for the current value. It's a lose-lose scenario.

I think the key here is how refunds were given in the past: If in BTC, then continue, likewise, if fiat...

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, I wanted to see even if someone brute-forces it, would you pay out. Although, that is insanely unlikely.

But two points.

1. If it is/was possible, the NSA or another US agency would already have this in their possession.

2. This would be worth a lot more than $500K, if anyone actually figures out a more efficient algorithm or a hack or attack, everything from ASIC firms to intelligence agencies would be throwing money to buy it. I wonder if it could even be patented.

We'll have quantum computers before this happens though lol.

If someone manages to find an efficient way to pick the right "k" would become rich in any way.
I wish we could make such discovery public for scientific purpose. The 500,000 US$ would be just a small "tip" compared to what would be coming afterwards  Smiley
I know it is not much compared what the discoverer could actually make from it, but i hope it motives some people to at least think about it.

And just as a hint: It is definitely worth making such discovery public ... you do not need to utilize this knowledge to use the powers of the dark side of the Force. If we publish this in a paper you will be flooded with job requests anyway, offering you salaries that you would never be able to spend in your entire life. Even if you tried hard  Grin

What if I got three autistic dudes together, locked up in a room and feeding them nothing but Ramen Noodles, promising them licorice if they solve K? Would I get all the reward moneys, or do I have to split with the three dudes who actually solved it, unbeknown to them that a reward was in place?

Smartphone Kill Switch Could Become Federal Law

Quote
On Thursday, US Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and Mazie Hirono (D-HI) introduced national legislation to require a way to disable smartphones remotely. The goal is to deter theft and protect consumers, but this defense against thieves might come with greater vulnerability to hackers, according to a mobile industry trade group.

WITH CELL PHONE THEFTS SURGING, KLOBUCHAR, MIKULSKI, BLUMENTHAL, HIRONO INTRODUCE LEGISLATION TO REQUIRE A “KILL SWITCH” ON SMARTPHONES TO DETER THIEVES, HELP PROTECT CONSUMERS [from themselves.]

The way I see it, this comes from the school of never-let-a-crisis-go-to-waste, in this case, blame thieves who've taken advantage of idiot consumers to advance an agenda.

Make no mistake, next are all internet-connectable devices, the same devices currently used to remit payment freely, i.e. Bitcoin.

So how does this work? I just joined an organization called "Purshoeing Joy", which just sent almost 5,000 pairs of shoes to people in Guatemala. I'm out of Fort Myers and I do all their marketing, the founder is down there right now actually distributing the first batch of shoes we were able to gather in Georgia mostly. The founder is terrified of Bitcoin, but I'm very much invested in the idea.

Are there minimum requirements?

Dan

Only requirement is that the charity is secular, non-political, and has a website that it can stick a bitcoin donation onto. If he's terrified of Bitcoin, just use a merchant processor that will convert coins to dollars or euros or whatever.

We commonly suggest using BitPay as the payment provider, but you're more than welcome to use any others that are available.

With rare exceptions, we rather have the website live on the interwebs for at least a year.

Murphy, I see you attend Vanderbilt. I had a good friend who was a professor there, named Barbara Wallston.

She used to attend Writers Nights in Nashville on Sunday night for the sole purpose to dance, of which nobody dances during such, for all practical purposes, but I would dance with her, for nobody else would given her weight and other non attributes.

It was a shock to use all to learn not only how she passed, but why. She broke her leg while attending a function in New York, and was given medicine to relieve the pain, instructed to see her family physician once she got back to Nashville, of which she did, of course. He too, prescribed more medicide, of which when took together killed her. Ironically, she just penned an exposé in the Nashville Banner trying to bring awareness to ending such practice.

Quote
Barbara Strudler was raised in a household that defied traditional gender roles. Her mother was a powerful executive and her father took on a job as a mail carrier, which allowed him enough flexibility with his hours to spend more time taking care of his children. Her parents fostered her scientific abilities as a child and Strudler became a math scholar in high school and eventually a math major at Cornell University. Strudler also minored in psychology and it was in her psychology class that she met her future husband, Kenneth Wallston.

After graduating from Cornell in 1965, Barbara Strudler Wallston joined her husband at the University of Connecticut at Storrs, where he was completing his PhD. Dissatisfied with her career prospects in mathematics, Strudler Wallston entered a master’s program in counselling and guidance. She earned her degree in one year, and quickly found a job at the university as a financial aid counsellor. Even while working for the university, however, Strudler Wallston maintained her interest in psychology. She audited several courses and assisted her husband in his psychological research.

A short while after starting at the University of Connecticut, Kenneth Wallston was offered a position at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and so the couple packed up and moved west. Rather than look for another position in academic counselling, Strudler Wallston decided to go back to school full time and work on her MA and later PhD in psychology. She studied social and personality psychology and much of her work focused on sex roles. This research area, along with her involvement in a women’s support group in 1970, helped form her feminist identity and paved the way for years of feminist scholarship.

Before finishing her PhD, Kenneth Wallston was offered yet another position, this time at Vanderbilt University’s School of Nursing in Nashville, and so they moved again. While there, Strudler Wallston completed her dissertation and worked as project director for Kenneth’s research. His work at the time considered various factors influencing the amount of information patients were willing to disclose to nurses. Strudler Wallston’s involvement in this project got her interested in the psychology of health and health care, and inspired her collaboration with her husband on health locus of control. Their work in this area led to the development of the Health Locus of Control Scale, which evaluates an individual’s beliefs about the amount of control they have over their own health (internal locus) versus the amount they believe their health care practitioners have over their health (external locus).

Her time in Nashville proved to be a time of immense personal change. She became involved in a seven step program that helped inmates become working members of society following their release from prison. She was touched by the lives of these individuals, to the point where she visited the prison every week. It was also at this time that Strudler Wallston and her husband divorced. Despite their decision to end the marriage, their work relationship remained strong. The two went on to collaborate on countless research projects.

Strudler Wallston is described as having had boundless energy and dedication to her profession. She worked non-stop and even managed to fit in two visiting professorships while on sabbatical. She helped form the Association for Women in Psychology as well as APA’s Division 35 (Society for the Psychology of Women), for which she served as president. Her work in health psychology also led to her involvement in the development of APA’s Division 38 (Division of Health Psychology). Though she was passionate about the areas in which her research focused, she understood the importance of sharing knowledge and theory and promoted interdisciplinary research. Strudler Wallston, while discussing Division 35, is quoted as saying:

We must divide our energies between strengthening a separate psychology of women and working for its integration. Our Division and Journal provide a power base from which to operate, but we must not let them become comfortable ghettos from which we never emerge nor second class dwellings, to be used only when there is nowhere to go (as cited in Russo, 1990, p 280).

The topics Strudler Wallston studied showed her breadth of knowledge when it came to psychology, with research in health, qualitative studies, minority issues, social justice and dual career couples. However, throughout her work Strudler Wallston maintained her feminist approach. Beginning in 1979, she, along with Rhoda Unger and Virginia O’Leary, took on the task of editing the newsletter for the Society for the Advancement of Social Psychology. In the two issues they edited, they focused on issues concerning gender roles. The newsletters were so popular that they decided to publish a book based on this work, entitled Women, Gender and Social Psychology (1985). That same year, Studler Wallston, Unger and O’Leary were awarded AWP’s Distinguished Publication Award.

After a short but illustrious career in academia and research, Strudler Wallston passed away in her early 40s in 1987. Colleagues, friends and students remember her fondly as someone who inspired creativity and motivated hard work. “To work as Barbara’s colleague was to find one’s own boundaries extended, one’s own possibilities expanded,”

To this day, every time I hear or read about Vanderbilt, I'm reminded of her.

She was found dead in her condo, laying on the floor, drowned in her own body fluid, due to how the medicine prescribed from two different doctors interacted.

There were four memorial services for her, all packed, during the week following her passing. I attending all four. After hearing testimonials after testimonials of all the people she helped, and was in the process of helping, I couldn't believe that she took time out for me to help get my mind straight after a very recent breakup, as a friend, not as a client, a week prior to her passing. She even let me sleep overnight at her home on the daybed.

Apologies for not editing for grammar, for my eyes are wet for some reason.

Good day.

I am reaching out to you on behalf of my organization, Nonprofit Technology Resources (NTR). We accept donated computer from individuals and corporations, and refurbish them with the help of welfare-to-work program participants and interns from the city’s technical training institutes. These people gain a range of both ‘soft’ and ‘hard’ employment skills. With the support of individual and institutional donors, many of these refurbished computers are given away, with a training workshop, to low-income Philadelphians and the organizations that serve them. Many others are sold at a discount to other nonprofit organizations to be distributed to their clients, also with a training workshop. The rest are sold in our Computer Thrift Store, which is open to the public.

I am inquiring about the Bitcoin 100 donation. NTR is a non-political, avowedly secular organization that focuses on providing technology and training for all low-income Philadelphians. NTR is a registered 501(c)(3) organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.  Would you please advise on eligibility and how to enroll?

Thank you very much for your assistance.

P.S. One of our board members found the Bitcoin 100 promotion last week, and asked that I pursue the opportunity. I set us up to accept Bitcoin on February 5, 2014- not even a full 48 hours ago. And it was done explicitly in response to the Bitcoin 100 campaign.

http://ntrweb.org/ looks fine, albeit a thrift store, with a 501(c)3 I may add. Ideally, I would love to see them have a Bitcoin Accepted Here in their window, but that's not a prerequisite, but perhaps suggest that to them if they're endowed, Rassah.
