701  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Multiple wallets mathematically more prone to loss? on: May 21, 2014, 09:07:10 AM
Off-topic I know, but this seems to me to be a complete myth.

Chosen at random from my old Longman's Dictionary (pages opened at random)...deform lockage sedate daunt captive

The dictionary has 70,000 words:

70,000^5 = ~ 2*10^24

Try brute-forcing that  Wink

As long as you have enough entropy, I do agree brain wallets are perfectly fine. The reason why many people including myself advise against it is that in general people are too lazy to properly choose random words instead substituting them for words they believe to be random or ones from famous films/songs/poems et al.
702  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Fee on: May 21, 2014, 12:12:48 AM
So Bitcoin is not suitable for micropayments?

It's fine for payments of above something like 10c. Otherwise you'd have a fee that's quite large in proportion to what your sending - however that's to be expected, the network was never designed to handle crap loads of midget payments. In reality I can't think of a reason you'd need to send less than 10c except to gamble but that should be done off-chain to avoid blockchain spam.
703  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Accidentally created a wallet address that someone else already has? on: May 21, 2014, 12:02:25 AM
I've always found that an example is the best way to convey the sheer size of numbers. I'll just leave this here:

Quote
Statistically speaking, unless the protocol changes to accommodate more decimal places, only 2.1e14 addresses could contain at least one Satoshi, and that's only if everyone only had one Satoshi. If anyone has more (and pretty much everyone who has any has more than one Satoshi), then there are fewer occupied wallets.

Within the set of 2256 private keys, they only map to 2160 unique wallet addresses. So the question is how does 2160 compare to 2.1e14? One in a million? One in a trillion?
The answer is one in 6.9595 decillion. Since "decillion" isn't a commonly used word, I'll save you the bother of having to look it up: it's a one with 33 zeroes after it.

To put that 6.9595 decillion figure into perspective: The Earth has a diameter of 12,742 kilometers, giving it a surface area just shy of 50 million square kilometers. A square kilometer is 1 million square meters, and a square meter is one million square millimeters, meaning the surface area of the Earth, in millimeters, is just shy of 50 quintillion mm2.

So here's the game we'll play. I've got 140 trillion earth-sized spheres. On one of them, I have randomly selected a single square millimeter as the prize winning spot. Find it, and you'll get to spin the prize wheel to see how much you've won. The prize wheel currently has about 22 million spaces. 21 million of them contain less than a dollar. But you only get to spin the wheel if you can find the secret spot on the secret sphere.

Wanna play?
704  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Nothing showing up in blockchain.info or blockexplorer.com? on: May 20, 2014, 11:53:13 PM
This depends on the wallet. They have to be able to "watch" addresses. Afaik bitcoin core does not support this yet. I know armory and blockchain do.

Electrum offers you to do the same - you need to copy over the Master Public Key from your offline client to your online one.

@OP: There is no difference - the website is updated with the newest version (although it would be better to download it from github so you can verify that it hasn't been altered).
705  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Renewed Optimism Drives Bitcoin Price to High Near $500 on: May 20, 2014, 11:46:50 PM
So everyone got really optimistic today about BTC and thats what caused it to jump?

Well that's how people think. Because the price is rising there is a high expectation that it will go higher and hence people demand more meaning that the price rises (ie a self-fulfilling prophecy). The same things happen when we have a crash - everyone panic sells and the price gets smashed until there are enough people willing to ignore it and buy thus stablising the value.
706  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Nothing showing up in blockchain.info or blockexplorer.com? on: May 20, 2014, 01:24:15 PM
ok, thanks. so if I have bitcoins in my c-cex account wallet, I really don't have any bitcoins until I send it out to another wallet that I own? like a wallet I created at blockchain.info? or bitaddress.org?

Correct - while they are listed in Cex's own records those records are not officially recognised by the network so until you withdraw to an address you will never see them. I would suggest you create a wallet using actual software (ie Electrum/Multibit/Qt) rather than web wallets - securing web wallets can be a pain. If you're using bitaddress.org download a copy from GitHub and use it offline to create your addresses and then import them into a client. If I were to recommend one it would be Electrum - you get a lot of security and features (offline tx signing comes to mind) without having to download the whole blockchain.
707  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which one do you guys feel more safe in keeping your coins? At a trading websit on: May 20, 2014, 01:20:51 PM
I personally would advise against keeping any coins more than necessary at an exchange. Although unlikely, they may very well go insolvent tomorrow and that leaves you out of pocket with possibly a reclaim process in the future if there are funds left over. Unless your trading, I would take everything out - else I would keep only the bare minimum you need to trade with. You can always send more if necessary.
708  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Fairly new to crypto. I want to learn and earn at the same time. on: May 20, 2014, 01:17:17 PM
It seems risky to trade, but I really want to learn and earn at the same time. Are there other alternatives that I can do to earn some btc? I don't have a computer or a laptop to help me with. I only rely on my tablet. Thanks for those who will answer my question!

I personally wouldn't trade unless you have a firm knowledge about what your doing - it's not easy to predict market movement (more so Bitcoin than most) and usually it's a case of luck rather than cold hard logic. You could try setting up a Bitcoin related website and use the traffic to get some money from advertising if you have any know-how/technical advice to share.

On the topic of faucets:

Just out of reference - faucets are actually bad if you reuse the address with large inputs later on. If you don't have coin control in your client (only Qt has it) then you won't be able to specify which inputs are going into your transaction meaning that in all likelihood you may be choosing those dust inputs. The problem here is that dust inputs take up space without really adding to the value of the tx so you may have a crap ton of dust inputs meaning you get a nonstandard transaction that either requires a larger fee (usually more than all your dust combined) or you take a long time to get confirmations as some miners don't accept non standard txs.
709  Other / Meta / Re: My appeal to the mods to unban/ reduce the ban time period of the user 'hensi'. on: May 20, 2014, 01:11:31 PM
From experience most apologies here, no matter how sincere, don't seem to be effective and you'll unfortunately probably just have to serve the time.

Yeah, you can whine, whinge, rage and apologize but from what I've seen in the past it won't get you anywhere. If I were you OP I would simply take the ban as a warning and a lesson to avoid mindless posting in the future and just wait it out. Two weeks isn't particularly long - just avoid the urge to open another account, you will be banned for ban evasion and your main account will get a further ban. Just take it as a cooling off period.
710  Economy / Lending / Re: Need loan 20000$ on: May 20, 2014, 01:03:54 PM
Please if anything is not understood, ask me.On my account is balance 57275$.I want loan only half price,i.e. 28500$-28600$.i can provide also screenshots of my account.

If you have this money I don't see why you need a loan. You could quite easily just withdraw it to your bank account and have it exchanged via localbitcoins or an online exchange. The reality is that your screenshots are just fakes and you have squat - nobody here is blind enough to loan you on your 'promise' of money that you don't have.
711  Economy / Investor-based games / Re: btc-arbs.com - Update: Withdrawal problems - DO NOT DEPOSITS - dying HYIP on: May 20, 2014, 01:01:10 PM
One thing is for sure, when it comes back online I'll withdraw all my btc. If they will..... ever :/

I personally wouldn't bet on that ever happening. They've finished their scam and are simply winding down now - closing the site and not responding is literally the last stage of the scam. The best you can do in the future would be to avoid HYIPs like the plague; all they do is abuse the greedy nature of people.
712  Economy / Services / Re: Escrow Services on: May 20, 2014, 12:58:47 PM
How can you tell that blindly ?? I already mentioned that no doubt I may be a newbie but I will take care of my customers well.

Yeah, well that's exactly what every single scammer has said in the past. Your words don't really mean much - its the trust you have acquired over time by successfully completing trades and exchanges. Until then you're literally a newbie with no trust and 9 day old account who wants to hold someone else's coins. If you truly want to open an escrow service I'd suggest you complete trades and build up a reputation as an honest person and stay here for quite a while (1+ years) before offering this.
713  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Nothing showing up in blockchain.info or blockexplorer.com? on: May 20, 2014, 12:55:37 PM
I have a very small balance of bitcoin in c-cex online address, its a very small amount but it is showing up.
However, if I search the address in blockchain.info or blockexplorer.com, it says that the address has never been used, balance is zero.
Its been about 3 days already since that small amount of bitcoin was sent, shouldn't the balance have shown up on blockchain and blockexplorer by now?

The balance won't be sent out until you request a withdrawal to a specified address. Until then Cex records how much you have and has funds stored in its hot and cold wallets respectively. When you request a payment they will then send it from there - but there is no value in having your Bitcoin is a random address until then for them. Much easier to secure and maintain if you have less things to worry about.
714  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Total number of bitcoins will DECREASE on: May 20, 2014, 11:07:45 AM
One thing that most people don't seem to understand is that after 21 million Bitcoins have been produced, the TOTAL number of Bitcoins in circulation will decrease in a LINEAR fashion each year.

While I do agree that the total number of spendable Bitcoins would decrease, I disagree that it would be in a linear fashion. Those who made the mistake in the past are unlikely to do so again and the experienced veterans are unlikely to lose their keys so to me it seems more like an exponential decay curve as the rate of change of total spendable coins. Nonetheless, as long as other market factors are unaffected price should logically rise as supply decreases.
715  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Altcoins wallet.dat file on: May 20, 2014, 04:06:26 AM
If they are copying most of the Bitcoin source then they should be found in the AppData/Roaming/'AltcoinName' depending on what the name of the altcoin is. Without changing the source I don't think you can actually change where you wallet.dat is loaded from. You'd have to swap them out accordingly if you wanted to open a different wallet.
716  Economy / Economics / Re: Richard Branson Invests $30 Millions in BitPay! Bitcoin About to Take off! on: May 20, 2014, 04:01:19 AM
Interesting, nice to see some big names join us. It's going to be interesting to see whether this garners anymore media attention and whether it will in turn attract more consumers and business willing to use Bitcoin as a fully fledged payment processor.
717  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Quick poll: best way to store your bitcoins. How you store? on: May 20, 2014, 03:54:00 AM
Cold storage using a secondary air gapped computer to sign my txs with Electrum. Encrypted version of the seed stored on paper and USBs and a few on cloud services with 2FA activated. Unless my password is cracked (which is unlikely) I should be fine - I don't reuse that password ever so it's nearly impossible to compromise.
718  Economy / Gambling / Re: Do you prefer anonymous gambling (no sign up) or gambling where you must signup? on: May 20, 2014, 03:46:29 AM
I would prefer to have the option to choose. It isn't too hard to implement a system which can accept bets both from anonymous users and those who want to have an actual account so they can track their bet history. That way you get the best of both worlds and people who don't want to risk having their whole balance on your site don't have to.
719  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can't send bitcoins from my Multibit Wallet. on: May 19, 2014, 12:51:57 PM
I have a Multibit wallet with 0.1511 BTC on it, I want to send it back to another online wallet (on Bitcoin Central) but can't because apparently, I need to have, at least, 1 BTC but I don't want to feed my wallet more so it looks like my BTC are stuck.

There definitely should be no requirement that you have at least 1BTC in order to send BTC from your Multibit wallet. Would you be either able to screenshot the error message your getting or post it word for word? Are you sure you downloaded the official Multibit client and not some virus laden one trying to scam you?
720  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Investopedia wants to know if 1 Bitcoin could be worth $1 Billion USD? on: May 19, 2014, 12:49:53 PM
If you're going to dream, dream big. :-) In the meantime,it's $450. :-)

There's a difference between dreaming big though and just dreaming complete insanity. I personally cannot see a case where we have BTC value at $1 billion USD/BTC - it just seems completely and utterly absurd.
