761  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: June 24, 2014, 06:12:52 PM
Personally I was hoping there would be no more cannibalization between CN coins and or a co-ordinated FUD against XMR from some disgruntled BCN followers. I respect BBR dev, but I can't understand the thought of breaking the market when a majority accepted XMR as the go to CN coin. With the private miner in BBR only a select few are enriching themselves for now and even the future with their big stashes. I noticed a slight simultaneous XMR downtrend and a corresponding BBR uptrend situation today for the first time.

bbr is a one-man show run by a very talented control-freak.  in order to have any hope of becoming the monopoly currency it would first need a complete relaunch under a new name, with a competent CEO type at the helm, and a diverse development team.

In contrast, QCN, MCN, FCN - these are just crap.  If I were the judge, the developers of these coins would be shot and their families billed for the bullet.  The BCN founders would merely be sent to Fort Leavenworth for a decade or so.

BBR team has 4 people now: 1 designer, 1 marketing, 2 devs

Looks like BBR is taking over. What does rpietila think about this?

763  Economy / Securities / Re: [ActiveMining] Official Shareholder Discussion Thread [Moderated] on: June 24, 2014, 03:50:56 PM
Look, if you're Ken why would you keep this company going?  He should pay off the refunds, follow the MSD instructions, and then liquidate the rest of the company.  Shareholders will get nothing because they are only supposed to get profit shares.  There are no profits.  Ken will take what he gets from the mining farm and liquidation money and retire on that.

There is no reason to bother with trying to make a 28nm chip.  For what?  The market is saturated with miners and mining chips that are already for sale and most of those chips don't even move.  Asicminer has 60 ph worth of chips.  KNC, Black Arrow, BFL, Cointerra, Spondoolie, it goes on and on...  Hash Fast is one of soon-to-be-many casualties because there aren't enough miners to support that many chips.

If Ken was really going to have a mining chip in Q3, he wouldn't be given out refunds.  He'd be telling customers, "You can wait until September and get your miner."

If Ken is smart, he'll deal with the legal stuff and then close up shop.  He can exit this thing with some money in his pocket and none of his personal wealth being taken from him.  It's all win for him.  Minus the reputation from a few disgruntled anonymous people on a website forum.

Oh for sure. It's highly likely Ken has at least a million from this venture. And he paid himself and other family members a nice wage too. Good guy.
764  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: June 24, 2014, 03:45:41 PM
This post of Alex's ended up here so I am replying here, not in the dark thread...

a) Who made Monero and why? What was their vision?

The vision was to bring CryptoNote to the masses without the two year ninja mine.

b) What had the Monero team done for privacy, before copying the Bytecoin code?

The main focus at the moment is to make the software usable. At the moment the memory usage, transaction dust and blockchain size must be focused on. At the moment CryptoNote is private enough. They will work on adding I2P at some point, but core usability is the focus right now.

Alex, they are not going to add fluff to pump and dump, this isn't dark. The anonymity in CryptoNote is working as it should, it doesn't need more features for features sake.

c) Are they really interested in anonymity, or did they try to cash out in the wake of DRK? Why did they make an anonymous coin in May - when DRK was already making a splash? If they were really interested in anonymity, why not earlier?

Actually the timing is a reaction to the public release of Bytecoin, not Dark.

d) Can Monero scale?

At the moment the aim is to get the Monero blockchain scaling at a linear function to Bitcoin. I personally think that an anonymous chain can be about five times larger. The extra size is worth the anonymity, just like Bitcoin requires several million times the space on your PC as mastercard requires, the extra function of bitcoin makes it worth it. The same goes for monero. If the monero chain can scale in a linear fashion albertly being larger we'll be fine.

We're talking about real anonymity here, the chain is going to be larger.

e) Is Monero's PoW futureproof, for providing almost 90% of its coins in just 4 years? Why would someone invest in such a curve?

Actually it's not 90% Monero will have an immortal coin release, coins will never stop being minted.

I argue we need a release of about 1% a year, some others think a lower amount. This discussion is ongoing and not set in stone.

f) Why would I put my money on something with 2% daily inflation? As a currency, does it fulfill one of the basic criteria - that being an adequate store of value?

No currency in it's first few years will be a good store of value, so many uncertainties. Even Bitcoin is not a good store of value at the moment. There has been no evidence of a nation state trying to attack Bitcoin, so we are in the dark as to how secure crypto currencies really are.

Alex, if you're truly looking for store of value, diversify into bonds, property and gold.

Cryptocurrencies will one day be a good store of value, but it's too early days to call it case closed. You make it sound like one crypto offers store of value whilst another doesn't.

g) What is the cost to render the blockchain DOA for someone who wants to kill Monero, in terms of Bitcoins? Can a kid, a hacker, a government spend 10 BTCs and make the blockchain so bloated that it doesn't even load the wallet - killing my multi-million investment?

Monero is still very experimental, so don't buy if you're afraid to lose it. I haven't seen 10 bitcoins destroy monero yet, let someone try, 10 bitcoin isn't a lot.

At the moment many Governments could easily take down bitcoin, let alone monero or darkcoin.

Also by the time it's commonplace to have a multi million dollar investment in Monero, many bugs and attack vectors will be ironed out.

h) Is Monero anonymous in itself, or does it also need IP obfuscation to achieve anonymity? If it is the later, how exactly is it so anonymous, and how can you vouch for the IP obfuscation network that it will be using? Is there an IP obfuscation network that is 100% reliable for anonymity purposes? As far as I am aware, there is none.

Monero makes the transactions from the perspective of a third party doing blockchain analysis anonymous.

However at the moment IP sniffing could render some information leakage for analysis of real time transactions. That is why using TOR like with Dark and Bitcoin is advised for now.

i) Why should I pick Monero instead of Boolberry? The specs of Boolberry are superior and the dev is seemingly doing more work on his own than the Monero devs. Remember I am a buyer and I don't care about who mines what so I don't care about CPU and GPU miners.

The specifications are superior? How so?

k) What happens if the Bytecoin guys (who made the code) discover a flaw, patch it in their own coin and then kill the clones by exploiting the flaw? If they are really underground hackers that hate the Monero copycats, isn't that a real possibility?

It might be, who knows. I heard the team split up, who knows how good the leftovers are?

l) What is the advancement potential given that Monero is a clone and Bytecoin is the original?

The monero team have identified many areas that need improvement and are working on them, as the monero project goes forward, one can hope more people will join the core team as more people get skin in the game.

As far as I can tell the team are working on many issues and I have confidence in what they are doing. I don't have confidence in the Bytecoin team due to their deceptive past.

m) What assurances do I have that the codebase is solid? For all I know it's totally untested in public use, being public for 2 or 3 months. Even the boolberry dev openly declares it to be untested.

Normally with white papers and code, you look into it yourself, if you can't then perhaps leave of investing for a few years.

Did you invest in Dark just because of "assurances"?

n) Is it usable by average joe?
o) Is it usable by companies and businesses?

Right now no, no and no. Although please don't forget that even Bitcoin is a pain to use by average people. In fact average people can barely get a printer to work.

There was around 450> btc ($300,000) lost on Gox. (Can someone please let me know the right amount, cant find it, i'm sure its less)
Yet people throw this around as if Ken had lost the whole $6 million of pre orders.

People are stating that Ken has not shipped anything.
He has actually sold out the Gold rush cards.

Mining at 100th.

People were stating Ken could not give out dividends.
Missouri securities actually stated he couldn't take more investment. Kens lawyer stated this would not matter as there was no intention to.

People are acting like the Missouri securities fine will be the death of the company.
Its going to be  $100,000>

People are stating that the reimbursement is going to end the company.
All 10,000,000 shares reimbursed at the 0.05 would only be $500,000. Highly unlikely. And generally more beneficial to ACTM.

Ken stated he wants to refund 100% pre orders.
He has started this process.

Ken has stated he is working with Hashfast and their creditors.

...

Since the IPO bitcoin has gone up over 5x.

ACTM received a partial refund from easic (nobody knows the exact amount)

ACTM received a full refund from Avalon.

ACTM sold out the Gold rush cards.

ACTM has a working IP - Purchased for 150,000 shares.
...

As stated before the pre order money could have easily funded the 28nm full custom asic. It is not uncommon in this industry.

Do we still have the 28nm full custom asic thing???

I'm not sure when it was said, but it's 100% certain that Ken no longer has any ASIC IP that can be used, the only IP was the 55nm but that boat has sailed.

It's over, and the shareholders get nothing. Get will never refund us, only the customers. Ken knows the legal threats from customers matter but investors do not. The only shareholder left to make any money from Ken is Bargraphics, the rest of us couldn't afford 2 hours of a lawyer's time, if we could there would be action taken by now. Anyway, nothing really matters for me, I'm too poor to fight Ken, he took everything I had. Sometimes the scammer wins, I think Ken has won.

News section on CryptoNote.org
We are happy to announce a news section on the cryptonote.org. The new section is dedicated to new developments, ideas and news from the CryptoNote realm. About two years ago the CryptoNote technology had only been represented by Bytecoin (BCN) but since then things have changed dramatically. Not only the number of Bytecoins has soared, the other coins such as Quazarcoin, Fantomcoin and Monero are taking the cryptocurrency world by storm. The CryptoNote community becomes very diverse and geographically disseminated therefore we believe it is our duty to spread the word and bring everyone at one place.  Just by clicking on the news tab you’ll have the latest account on what’s been going on with CryptoNote-based currencies along with fresh updates from the devs at hand. The idea is to turn this website into a vibrant pool of information accessible to anybody who wants to keep one's finger on the pulse of CryptoNote technology. If you are a CryptoNote enthusiast and you have some ideas worth sharing, please don’t hesitate to contact us at news@cryptonote.org

What order are the coins being listed on https://cryptonote.org/coins.php

It doesn't seem to be order of release, order of name, order of currency code.

So what is it?
The main/first cryptonote is listed first (bytecoin) then the rest (altcoins) are listed alphabetically below.

Yeah I know, but the list isn't sorted then is it?

Either they should sort the list in an order, or put a noticeable divider between BCN and the rest. At the moment it looks like perhaps an order of preference from the cryptonote team.

http://virtualminingcorp.com/

The website has gone and been replaced with refund information.

It would be nice if after the refunds have been completed, the site would be replaced by a new modern version, with some good branding and competitive instock products. Letting ACTM start on a new foot. Building a new image for the company and moving forward.

One can dream.....

This proves Ken no longer wishes to sell equipment and knows the company is over.

I know why.

Ken fears the customers because a lot of them have money and the various legal firms are working on their behalf. However Ken knows that the shareholders have no power, only Bargraphics is rich, the rest of us poor.

So Ken satisfies the customer first, and himself second. The shareholders will get nothing. I have been scammed.
769  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Just-Dice.com : Invest in 1% House Edge Dice Game on: June 24, 2014, 04:57:42 AM
Also remember that Dooglus many times said that he was at the point where he run the site for the benefit of the bitcoin investing community.

Just-Dice allowed us to safely invest in a gambling sites bankroll without fear of having to commit. He created the site when his net worth was well under a million, now the bitcoin price and the profit the site has generated made him a millionaire, he had little incentive to keep the site months ago. He said that he only kept it going for us and for that I thank Deb and Dooglus a million.

Now laws all over the world are restricting bitcoin activities, pushing fair gambling out of the window and into the hands of the big greedy casino's. That's what laws do, empower the powerful.

It would make no sense for Dooglus to put his life on the line to keep this going. He would be at risk of losing everything he has ever worked for and being put in jail forever. Remember laws are only for the powerful.

Deb and Dooglus, thank you very much, it's been a great ride!

HOLY TOLEDO guys!

Ken actually already refunded my order in BTC.
I can't believe it. Are you sure bitcoin transactions aren't reversible? Smiley

I will need at least one week to recover from this totally unexpected event.

Finally I can close this chapter full of horror.

Nice, now let's see how many he actually does.

Not that I'm pessimistic, but when I ordered from him he sent the prospector board next day air in like two days. Then I come on the board and see people waiting a week or two and get it shipped ground.
Hopefully he can continue this trend and get refunds out to everyone in similar fashion.

100% of per-orders will be refunded if they chose BTC.

Edit: 100% of pre-orders will be refunded.  USD may take longer.

What about investors? No concern from you that 400 bitcoin worth of shares is now worth less than 1 bitcoin?

Was no one else who is posting over the last week or so paying attention during the original run?  Monero got a high market cap after darkcoin blew up because it has attractive anonymity components.  Then people decided it wasn't practical due to block chain bloat, etc.  The price fell like 75%.

Then somehow people forgot or ignored everything that was decided during the first round and it went way up again.  I read probably the majority of posts after the last several weeks and no one talks about those original problems.

If you think those underlying issues will get fixed (by Monero vs. another cryptonote coin), it's a pretty awesome investment.  If you have no idea what I'm talking about I probably would be more careful with your money.

Let's assume eventually the monero blockchain is 5 times larger than bitcoin. Is that worth full anonymity? Kind of like how bitcoin is more bloat than MasterCard but you deal with it anyway because the benefits outweigh the bloat.

That is how I see it. You've got two choices. A chain larger than bitcoin but with full anonymity or not.
773  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: June 23, 2014, 02:12:39 PM
The whole business seems to be playing out like the history of btc on fast forward, but I imagine it only seems that way because we are processing the earliest and smallest manias.  The time between the last two ramps was about 5 days. It will be interesting to see if the same time scale repeats.

My recurring thought lately has been that u.s. laws on proceeds of crime and the transparent block chain essentially doom btc fungibility in the world's largest "free" crypto market, and cryptonote offers the perfect hedge against this failure mode.

Perhaps as an underground currency (XMR) where governments try to squash anonymous-ness. But, who is going to use a potentially "illegal" currency in mass? I imagine in countries with serious economic problems, which actually might eventually be the same countries that are doing the squashing!

My "worry" though is both that the networks and price will suffer due to governments. I understand that this area (Crypto) is just getting started so even an "illegal" currency would probably have more value than a legal state owned one...

IAS

I'm not convinced about CryptoNote overtaking Bitcoin anytime soon, although being number two is seemingly a likely scenario now.

The thing that Bitcoin offers to the world is effortless transaction into any other crypto currency. As long as Bitcoin exists so does the wider CryptoCoin economy.

The only way to stop this is too ban the entire thing (hint: Bitcoin), which I see being impossible due to the fact that any action that deprives a nation of a major economic market is going to ruin that countries economy in no time. (think 10 years where Crypto is being used everywhere)

I tried making contact with the law firms, it seems that they are not eager to respond.

It's likely Ken has somehow lawyered his way out of this one, I wonder how many Bitcoin he stole vs lost.

Theif.

Wow, there is a pump going on with this coin.
I should have bought more.
Any reason for the pump?
There is a ton of competition, perhaps people are exchanging their DRK?

The only real long term competition is Bitcoin with side chains.

Possible refunds being given?

I was wondering how long until he finally moved the coins, probably into his own retirement fund.

End of the scam guys. I hope some of you are rich enough to take Ken to prison for life.
778  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: June 17, 2014, 01:02:27 AM
Maybe I am missing something here but seemingly large amounts of paranoids are screaming about the near 51% mining of a single pool in the bitcoin world,  why do I not hear similar now that moneropool is running at 57% of the network?

Is the PoW scheme fundamentally different to BTC (obviously not algo)?

I've been doing some research into it, apparently one difference is that a 51% attacker cannot double spend.

More research is needed.
779  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - Secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: June 17, 2014, 12:52:08 AM
did somebody address the blockcahin issue?

it is growing really fast I think it isnt sustainable on the long run. I suppose a hard fork is coming soon?

The first issue is that the client needs to split the chain into chunks like Bitcoin does (on disk) so that only a part is in ram.

Then they can move onto the next issue of getting the blockchain smaller. It's really inefficient at the moment so there are lots of room for improvement.

Remember this is early stage tech, it's where Bitcoin was in 2009 - 2010.

Mathew Green tweeted they were developing it specifically for zerocash, cbf to find it, look through his posts.

Well it sounds suspect.

They are developing something that has wider ramifications and would be more useful than zerocash itself to just help get zerocash started.

I remember doing a lot of research into this idea, and what I found was it's highly unlikely to be solved.

It's like saying, to help us build the 100 km skyscraper, we'll just invent a super material. Easy.
