How many expected Bitcoin's price to crash after it surpassed 3k?

Guilty as charged. I had been telling family and friends to buy bitcoin for years and none of them wanted to hear it. It was around 2,000-3,000 dollars they all came to me and said "well im starting to be convinced should I buy some now" and I was telling them no! At this point I suspect they just think I'm a bastard who wants to gloat and doesn't want to share in any of the success. Cheesy

Monero Rocks again with a news :

Monero to be accepted as payment by 45 musicians including @MariahCarey, @Sia, @Weezer, @LanaDelRey, @thelumineers, @G_Eazy, @DollyParton, @dixiechicks, @Slayer for holidays.

Quote
“As cryptocurrencies become more popular, it’s important that my fans have choices when it comes to how they buy my songs and merchandise,” said rap star G-Eazy in a statement. “Given Monero is one of the safest, most secure and most private cryptocurrencies, it’s one of the best options for my fans this holiday season — and just in time for my new album.”

Rofl what? Well, hey, thanks for the endorsement Mr. "G-Eazy". Or is it just Mr. Eazy and G is the first name? How did this become a thing? Did "G-Eazy" just call up his "nigga" FluffyPony on a lazy Saturday afternoon and be like "Hey you know I was thinking"? There HAS to be a story behind this.

The beauty of the tangle.

OMG! That is bananas! I mean I knew, intellectually. But watching it in real time, astounding.

I had a Polo withdrawal sit all  night long in pending status. tried 4 more times since, nothing. BTC withdraws just fine. Not making me happy.  Angry

Yeah, I've been withdrawing everyday for a while at my limit and no problems. Problems started about 2 days ago.
I'm thinking I'll need to convert to BTC and Shapeshift once its out. It's then abou short term timing. Grrrrr

They probably needed to pull from cold wallet. Most likely many withdrew since prices on exchanges were so different. What is good is that Polo reduced its withdrawal fee. Smiley

I recently had a Polo withdrawal sitting in 'pending' status for 24 hours, after which I opened a help ticket with them, they sorted it within a couple of hours and the withdrawal went through. Still dependable in my opinion.

Wow really? I waited months for support to contact me and eventually just gave up.

You know shit is getting real when the Monero Reddit server says it can not serve your request because it is "too busy" at the moment.

This happens quite often and got nothing to do with monero though :p

For some reason I was under the impression that subreddits ran on their own servers not a giant Reddit server.
966  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: December 06, 2017, 07:27:22 PM
It looks like price is settling around 0.0214 btc... Volume is dropping a little as well ( on poloniex ). Does this mean the run up is over  ( for now ) ?
I rather hope it is a long stable rise, XMR is one of my favourite coins and have huge potential.
More and more investors notice it.
I really couldn't understand the reason behind monero's success. I was targeting $200 for monero and I already sold my holdings before we get there and after all, it reached and passed $300. This is big.
The difference is that monero actually fill a market need. In the world of private fungible crypto currencies monero is the bitcoin. And in the world of crypto currencies what monero represents is similarly, if not more, important than bitcoin it's self. Don't think of this project the same way that you do the 1000 projects out there that are like "hey look at our neat gimmick!". Plenty of money to be made trading them around to be sure but don't confuse this with them. If you are good at making money trading around the gimmick coins than what I would do is think of monero as a good place to take some of your profit from those activities.
967  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: December 06, 2017, 03:22:45 AM
Monero has recently shown excellent growth. Since November, the price rose from $ 85 to 280 more X3. You can be happy for XMR holders of tokens. I wonder will there be a correction after the growth. I want to believe it. Because it is now expensive to buy

I find, in this space, a little bit of patience to be prudent but too much patience to be a recipe for disaster. There is no such thing as a strait shot to the moon. We will either see a correction or a consolidation soon. Even if its a brief one. Things happen FAST around here but not so fast that you cant wait 24 hours to see how it shakes out.

That's my 2 moneroj anyhow... Now worth almost 600 dollars... Kinda ruins the effect...

More and more demand for privacy coins like Monero!!

It is not just criminals who wants privacy... actually the bigger transactions comes from wealthy folks who are trying to keep their wealth a secret.

Take a look at the leaks from Paradise Papers and Panama Papers and we can all see that it is our political leaders, royalties, top business leaders etc who are really hiding all their transactions and wealth..

criminal transactions pale in comparison to them...

It's also important for corporations and businesses to not leak sensitive information about their internal operations to competitors.

Wow. Nearly half a billion USD volume in the last 24h Shocked

Yay! Cheesy

Korea:  Catch me if you can!
Everyone takes a breather.  Bithumb pours on the coal.

And here is the kicker. The more the price rises the more the trend chasing speculator herd will be motivated to do some research on our project. The more research people do the more they see the fundamental value. It's like a virtuous cycle. Green price action begets green price action when then fundamentals are on your side.

IOTA IS ON A MULTI LEVEL SCAM BUSINESS
INVOLVEMENT OF MICROSOFT IS JUST A GIMMICK AND TANGLE IS BASICALLY JUST A BLOCKCHAIN NOTHING SPECIAL THERE ARE BETTER COINS LIKE BURST WHICH ARE CHEAP THIS IS JUST ANOTHER GIMMICK SCAM

You hardly come off as credible when you pump your own book in the very same post Roll Eyes

That also begs the question how do we know when there is an asic? We blame alot of hash on botnets but we cannot verify it's not asic afaik.

Well now that is a pickle isn't it. Hopefully by the time their use became too rampant physical evidence of their existence would surface. Or if even the highest profit margin cards became grossly unprofitable even with free or very cheap energy inputs, that might be some evidence. I don't think botnet mining would be able to account for that.

Fees are becoming onerous again.

until all the fancy tx size reducing code is thoroughly reviewed.  Then an axe will be taken to the fees with the next hardfork.

Are you speaking of mimblewimble?

Bullet Proofs, and other tasty treats. Reducing Tx size by an order of magnitude will confer the same on Tx cost.
I love how all this stuff is proposed for bitcoin, and the Team says, Oh good, we can use that!  While everyone else sits on their thumbs, or waves their hands.  Or one of each, IDFK.

IKR? I heard FP talking about mimblewimble so I went and did a little research on it. Turns out the thing that is preventing them from implementing it on bitcoin (besides endless governance problems) is that you cant do any sort of on chain scripting with it. But monero doesn't try to be anything other than a currency so its a perfect fit. My crypto investment strategy has been to focus on projects that may be able to address the shortcomings of bitcoin. Namely the lack of scalability, fungibility and privacy. I took a big position in monero because it deals with the latter two but its starting to look like it might also be one of the best bets for scalability too!

Ready to fork off as required.  I'm here for the Monero Project, not cryptonight.  The Team has done an outstanding job thus far, proving themselves to be the best in the field, attracting more of the same to the snowball.  When they say it's time to upgrade, we upgrade.  I expect there will be minimal fuss (from those not developing ASICs)

Good good. This is just the sort of sentiment that will make it worth nobodies time to ever even try to produce cryptonight asics.

I think I read a Monero update or something that said the devs are investigating that.

I’m pretty sure Surae and the MRL gang is on the case. I remember at the NY meetup him basically talking about (I’m paraphrasing here) how he inherently doesn’t trust the algorithm because it was created by the bytecoin devs.

Awesome. Good to know.

Please could we mainly focus on MONERO here?
I know all of you, the ONIONers have to make XX amount of posts every week to meet your sales target - but please - spare us this tiring sales pitch of your lovely coin - keep it to yourself.

If you are going to bump one of them please at least don't bump a whole wall of text of garbage as well.
975  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: December 05, 2017, 09:55:20 PM
You know I think we should talk about the community being open to changes to the cryptographic hashing algorithm. It's not cryptonight specifically that we are wedded to but the opposition to application specific hardware in mining.

How do you guys feel about a hard fork away from cryptonight and into something different if A) a good new hashing algorithm presents its self and B) asics begin to be deployed at scale for mining cryptonight based cryptocurrencies? The advantages are twofold. One, we will be building community consensus around the idea that the hashing algorithm is a flexible thing and so avoid being forced to face the prospect of a bitcoin cash type situation. But also the acknowledgement of this consensus within our community will help to discourage the development of cryptonight hashing ASICS.

Thoughts?

The link text is definitely legit.
Thanks.
I know this is not supposed to be a Dash-bashing thread and I suspect this has been addressed somewhere way back in this massive thread, but how did Dash absorb would would appear to be a massive body blow as a result of this Princeton research paper (i.e. section 3.2)?

https://arxiv.org/pdf/1709.02489.pdf

Is there an official Dash response somewhere?

I don't want to click w/e that URL is but I'm definitely interested. Does anyone have a more official looking link to this paper or just the name of it so I can search for it?

https://arxiv.org/abs/1709.02489

Haha yea I'm just extremely wary of any link that ends in .pdf.

I wonder if these researchers bought a bunch of monero before they published this paper Cheesy. It's some pretty damning stuff.

Monero GUI has a box for the amount to be send. Right side of that box is a button "All". That button is better to be removed, so that no one will accidentally send all xmr.

Unless you want to burn a wallet.

As long as there is some serious messages. "Are you sure you want to send all coins from this wallet?"

Click OK

You can make people type in "send all coins" or something like that in the confirmation dialogue box. That's what world of warcraft does. If you want to delete a character you don't just click yes you have to type DELETE in all caps.
979  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: December 05, 2017, 02:47:57 AM
The more I read about the monero, the more coins I want to buy) The guys you do not know the timing of the introduction of the Korvie update and the introduction of multi-signatures, at least approximate.

The "soon™" meme is used liberally around here and for a reason. But all the soon™ things have EVENTUALLY come out. Man let me tell you about LMDB. That was the worst. For like a half a year or a year or something monero was borderline unusable. It needed like 10 gigs of ram or something crazy. All we could ever get was soon™. But then one day it came and it was glorious.

This alternate coin is in my list of top 10 best alternate coins and planning to invest on this soon. 11th all-time in market cap and price seems to be a potential alt coin about to go up high. I am speculating that this coin right here will be following ZCash's path.

Good God.  I'm out.

Count your blessings. Atleast you can still tell. Wait until AI is actually really good.
