I'll challenge that. Over the recent decades we've seen the widespread adoption of credit and debit cards and in the last ten years that's turned to online payments. The volume of cash, i.e., paper money, used in the last decades has declined significantly. EDIT: I stand corrected. Just found this article from the New Yorker which claims the amount of US paper currency in existence has increased. This is must be an indicator of how much the money supply has increased over the same time period...because the developed world has certainly shifted to a more electronic payment system. Not only has the supply of actual Fiat increased, the amount of "e dollars" or fractionally reserved value has increased as well. I live out in the sticks, so I still encounter people using a majority of cash. A lot of folks don't have access to a bank; and given the low wealth a large number of folks simply can no longer have a bank account (checksys blacklist). It's so bad they sometimes won't give you an option the make a card transaction under x, for example I must spend at least 5 dollars to make any purchase at my nearest tobacco shop. And the icing on the cake is that one out of three businesses simply don't accept cards, only cash. Yezzir, cash is still King, dammit. |

It's possible, but only an extremely economically depressed country would bother. Why? Cryptos, at least as we know them, can aid and abet capital flight, which is the bane of all goes. What you don't want is a way for someone to quickly, cheaply and anonymously move value outside of your country. If a gov were to issue a coin, it would look pretty much like the ACH system in the US, or Ripple for a direct Crypto comparison. Transactions would have to be reversible; everyone would be identified, and fees would go to the central authority as there is no need for decentralized consensus.
We will be using cryptos mainstream, soon. They just need to make it so seamless that it is indistinguishable from using electronic cash, that is a debit card. This is already the case honestly; I only keep Crypto, and with my Shift card no one knows that I am spending coin when I swipe at a point of sale.

They would be able to control the network quite easily at that point; it would take the efforts of another state actor to stop something so monolithic. *cough* China *cough*. As far as I know, the SEC hasn't banned the participation of US citizens in the ICOs outright. They have just expressed "concern" over the rising number of ICOs and the shady people behind them. So unless the ICO explicitly bans US passport holders in its terms and conditions, you can participate in them. The federal income tax will be 39.6%, if your annual income is more than $418,401.
So there is really no penalty to be imposed by the government to someone who covertly joined an ICO even if the company doing the offer is clearly not accepting US citizens. Anyway, in this case, it is not anymore the fault of the ICO issuer but of the ICO buyer but they have to declare it once there is already a gain out of the transaction and must pay the right rate of tax. That announcement from SEC on ICO is just an introduction of the many possibilities in the future and definitely it was not detailed. I wouldnt paint this so cut and dry. I will agree that they will not retroactively enforce this; that is making a list of participants and going after them (would be really difficult, to be honest). But you are running afoul of some pre established law by participating in these as a guidance has been issued. Since you aren't the one holding the money; they would be more likely to go after the ICO (this is about money, after all). Besides willfully purchasing an illegal, unregulated security, most of us are not accredited investors, which requires an AMAZING amount of income or wealth to qualify for. Only accredited investors would be allowed by the SEC to participate in something with this much risk. If you lie about being an accredited investor, or your region, to participate in one of these (they are starting to ask this now), you may forfeit your ability to seek damages/redress as you committed fraud. Be careful. All of these arent securities, but for the ones that are, treat these as truly risky/volatile investments. |
