its like having a second identity. you can be you or this fake person depending on what infomation you give people. it works anywhere your SSN is required. you can apply for a drivers license but i dont recommend it.

this quote is kind of like getting inside the mind of a scammer, they may honestly believe that the are stealing the info of an imaginary person?

Oh, and since I am new here, I would like to begin with small transactions and build up trust from there. Smiley

Thosecoins (or themcoins) seems to be doing good business.  Check that thread out.

I also recommend bitcoin-otc
1549  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 0.0001459BTC Transactions from no where? on: September 08, 2012, 04:28:18 AM
I have several online, offline, android wallets and I also have a wallet on my computer, the official app that I leave running all the time just as a network node, I figure downloading and passing on the block chain is beneficial to the network.

I recently opened up my ports on my router so its jumped from 9 connections to 30-40 connections and recently I've been getting several very small transactions, every other day or so of around 0.0001 to 0.0003?

Is this some sort of kickback from leaving bitcoin connected 24hrs a day?  None of my online, offline or cellphone wallets are receiving these small transfers?

That's the current payout here: http://freebtc.com
/edit. or close anyway... it varies somewhat

Either you input your address there or someone else did it for you.

LOL thats funny...

I wonder if I have a little BTC fairy going around and submitting my address to all the free bitcoin sites?  Now I'm curious who it might be?! hahahaha

Oh, and thanks for the quick and accurate response, makes more sense now!

what if the fairy got your private keys?  haha Sad

I know its a very very VERY slim chance of someone generating the same key pair randomly, but has anyone documented or reported this happening?  I'll keep an eye on it for other activity....

you could always generate a new wallet and transfer all your coins to that one to be totally sure.

edit nevermind i forgot you have mutliple wallets

love the pianos man.  if there were some reliable place to purchase FLACs for bitcoin i'd have some serious trouble holding on to it.  what sucks about buying music online is you have to pay for a physical CD if you want to get lossless files.  i can't justify spending an average of say $0.99 for a 320kbps mp3 when it is a 1/4 of the quality of a WAV/AIFF/FLAC.  for years i used to spend about $20-50 a week on records, now nothing.

how about this one too - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZspnU6THJrI

Anyway he convert bitcoin wallets to hard currency to transfer to bank account, or Paypal address ? If the only way to use the funds is to spent it, he has to be using a real address, or someone he knows, or work address, other then mines to get items, or a po-box. Otherwise their no point in doing the scam if he can't benefit from it somehow. More likely he going to try to turn the funds into cash somehow, so it's harder to trace him.

As far as tracing IP it's very hard, as he could have used someone else wireless, you can try getting it from ISP, but if he went thur the trouble of using my info, then almost certain everything going to be fake. Other way to trace maybe trace him is to look at the tracking if anyone received a package from him, even if he used a fake address, he has to drop it off or pickup at a postoffice, so will give you maybe a area close by, where he may live or work by.

What is bitcoin wallets in detail?

Hey retro, I'm too new here to know firsthand about BTC Guy, but here are some other threads people have posted about him.  There might be some info in here that would help you.

1555  Other / Off-topic / Re: AntiSec starts releasing details of apple devices tracked by FBI on: September 07, 2012, 06:35:58 PM
ok so there are ~350 million iOS devices sold.  it is known that the agency had 12 million.  given that, i would assume that they have all of them, or at least the capability to obtain them if desired.

what's important is not that they may or may not have your device ID - but that if you own one of these devices you are making yourself vulnerable to them

if you are concerned about these topics - do not own or operate these products.

1556  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: what happens if receiving wallet is disconnected ? on: September 07, 2012, 06:28:16 PM
hello
what happens if receiving wallet is disconnected and stays like that for some time. (lets say for 1 month)
does the sent BTCs bounce or be lost?
are they automatically received once receiving wallet is brought back online. (I mean bitclient with that particular wallet is connected to internet)

The simple answer is the receiving wallet doesn't need to be online.  The only way to "lose" coins is to lose the private key in the wallet for that address.

The real answer ... "there is no spoon".
You don't actually receive bitcoins and the sender doesn't actually send them to you.   The blockchain is like a ledger.  It records who owns what.  When a sender "sends" coins they are simply transferring ownership of the coins in the public ledger.  Your client knows how many coins you "own" by looking at the current balance in the blockchain for each of your addresses.

So you could extract the private keys from your wallet, write them down on a piece of paper, die, and 20 years from now someone find the paper import it into whatever wallet currently exists and gain control of those coins.

hey death - i've been wondering if its possible for someone to generate the same private key as someone else, unknowingly?  i see how it could happen using a very insecure brainwallet.

they will not be lost.

you can also generate addresses (and their corresponding private keys) offline with bitaddress.org or brainwallet.org.

then print out the paper wallet or remember the passphrase for a brainwallet and never worry about losing your wallet.dat if your computer is compromised, because the private keys will have never been stored on your computer in the first place!   you can check the address at blockchain.info anytime you wish to verify your balance.

thanks gweedo, stan - very helpful.  i think i will start with this MIT ocw course i found here: http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-00sc-introduction-to-computer-science-and-programming-spring-2011/

i don't really know what i want to do with the knowledge, but i have the interest and enough free time at the moment to put the effort in.

1559  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: synchronizing network slowed to a crawl on: September 07, 2012, 06:09:40 PM
hello
yesterday I downloaded bitcoin client (regular one) and started to syncronize to network. Blocks remaining was dropping very fast. Now nearly 12 hrs passed and now remaning block numbers decrease very slowly. (it didnt hang, changing)
why is that? any idea
cheers

It is because the earlier blocks are smaller (less transactions).  Overall you're downloading like 4gb.  Make sure you have port 8333 open so you can connect to more nodes. It took me more than a day to sync when i downloaded from scratch last week.

You can also use a client that does not need to download the entire blockchain like Electrum.  There are others.  Much to learn here!

edit to add: if you go take a look at Satoshidice you may understand why the most recent blocks have so many transactions.
