That seems like a build error. The openbsd and macos build scripts have a lot in common but system miniupnpc shouldn't be assumed on the Mac.

The latest build is not a mandatory update so I would recommend simply sticking with the previous one until we get that sorted out.

OK, thanks smooth. I dragged & dropped the latest OSX build and did not make a backup of the old one before doing so...whoops. Any place I can find 0.8.8.3?

Trashcan?

unfortunately not, i just replaced the bitmonerod and simplewallet files so they didn't end up in trash. no worries though i will wait it out and use linux in the meantime.

You can get it from my torrent, which I haven't updated. You'll get an old version of the blockchain with it, but you can disregard that and just use the binary:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=583449.msg8722972#msg8722972

success! thanks for the help.

928  Economy / Speculation / Re: Something is wrong with BTC on: September 12, 2014, 05:23:33 AM
BTC is suffering something very strange. I mean, can someone explain, please, what is going on with the price that stuck between 450-500 USD; is ithis normal or is jut me making a scene?

you are experiencing your first bitcoin "boring season". these things happen. make sure you buy as much as you can during these times.
929  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: September 12, 2014, 05:10:01 AM
Right now.  I have paid for goods and services in XMR myself.  It's not hard to do, really.  You just find a motivated seller and offer a fair deal.

Good to hear that. Can you say more about that?

A previously published example (my largest XMR purchase to date):  I purchased a large-format oil painting in XMR; the artist subsequently paid rent in XMR.

they must have a pretty cool landlord to accept XMR.
930  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: September 10, 2014, 04:36:48 PM
why are you doing that?

Warz is responsible for the buy wall, I think.

Apple is too reliant on the way things are to touch bitcoin until the money supply/marketcap is much larger, in my opinion.

Apple has $160 billion liquid USD. Bitcoin is just about 6 billion right now, roughly 4% of the total dirty fiat money they hold.

I suspect they will come eventually but we will need another order of magnitude increase. They want to keep people spending money on their new products, their target market is not us Bitcoin fanatics. Yet.

i would be into a physical Monero if it looked timeless and valuable.

smoothie - can you get coins manufactured that look like old roman currency?
933  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: September 07, 2014, 04:46:17 PM
I find it interesting that the total amount of XMR for sale on Polo remains around 150k which is quite low in a downtrend.

Seems to indicate that the new holders of the ~50,000 XMR unloaded by windjc intend not to sell at any price near these levels, but this is just wild speculation. Smiley

edit: i am not sure if windjc meant 6 figures of XMR or 6 figures in fiat...
934  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: September 04, 2014, 10:55:12 PM
Looks like some folks just got a lot of cheap Monero!

It was dropping yesterday before this incident, so they've not really got a lot of cheap Monero.

More like panic bought a lot of Monero.

Was dumped to +- 0.00375 and went straight up again, I think he meant that Smiley

Yep. Panic dumping out of fear is ALWAYS a bad idea. I watched it happen with BTC on the March 2013 hard fork, the SR crash, and all of the mini panics when Gox was freezing up all the time. This is reminiscent of those times.

Yeah, those that panic sold BTC at $500-1300 must be kicking themselves.

There is a clear difference between this (where the issue was solved) and when the BTC Bubble popped (actually bad news).

Actually I think this attack did more good to monero than bad, some external consultants were hired to resolve the issue and look at the code. Probably more bad or sloppy code was found which can be fixed now.

A difference which you have not explained.

Rikke, why do you have so much hate for XMR?
935  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency (mandatory upgrade) on: September 04, 2014, 08:41:52 PM
One thing is not really clear to me and excuse me that I don't want to read all the pages of this thread.
I could not find it on the website as well.

How do I recover my private key? I got a bunch of words which is representing my private key, I wrote them down and stored them, but is there any other way to look into a file on my computer to find these words again?

edit: nevermind, I restarted the client with ./simplewallet and was asked about wallet.bin

You can also find the mnemonic seed (the 24 words) by using the command "seed" within simplewallet.

Let's say your hard drive crashes - you can recreate your wallet on another computer by starting simplewallet with the argument --restore-deterministic-wallet, then entering the words. Not bad!
936  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: OTC monero selling/buying thread after XMR hack on: September 04, 2014, 05:40:00 AM
you realize they are going to rollback the blockchain, so any XMR transactions made now will likely be invalid in the future?

do not trade

edit: they will not be rolling back the blockchain, trade away!

938  Economy / Speculation / Re: A Short Youtube Documentary that Reveals the Fate of Bitcoin Holders on: September 04, 2014, 12:19:59 AM
For many of us, Bitcoin would have to go below $20 to start losing any money.

And I'm still buying BTC at $400 levels.
939  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: September 04, 2014, 12:15:49 AM
Monero is quite the addiction, lately I don't care much about my BTC stash. just collecting as much XMR as i can before it's too late!

Sorry for posting what might be construed as a shill post, but I am genuinely enthusiastic.

940  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: September 03, 2014, 05:25:30 PM
Personally I think the logo and color scheme is great! It is bold and striking without being flashy like many other coins. Do you want your money represented by something that looks like it should be on a cereal box?

The Monero logo is understated and tasteful, just as it should be. Cheesy
