Weekly Update #3- This week we witnessed the opening of two exchanges, first by Mugen's CryptoCoin, followed by Chris' Bitparking. Trading on Bitparking has been very impressive, first day volume was over 200k ppc. Thanks to Chris and Mugen for providing the trading platforms for the community.
- Several GUI applications have also been created by the community. Users who are not proficient with command line can now choose between the GUI applications. We recommend due diligence to verify the reputation and source code of these applications.
- The network protocol switch will occur tomorrow (September 10th) and users must upgrade to v0.2.0 before the switch. Switch is automatic so users don't need to do anything special. I will monitor the state of the network tomorrow and provide updates on the network status.
- A bug has been found with the checkwallet command. It may generate false reports on wallet problems. Fix will be included in the next bug fix release v0.2.1
- I would like to discuss a bit about block spacings. As ppcoin has two type of blocks, proof-of-work block and proof-of-stake block, each type has its own spacing target. Proof-of-stake blocks have a constant spacing target of 10 minutes. Target spacing of proof-of-work blocks are variable, with a minimum target of 10 minutes, and a higher target spacing when proof-of-stake block spacing approaches 10 minutes. When proof-of-stake blocks become abundant, we estimate that proof-of-work block spacing would eventually settle around 30 minutes. The purpose of this design is to reduce the variance of block spacing and maintain overall spacing target around 7.5~10 minutes.
Happy trading and next week!

Well, I fiddled around with the source code and added the PPCoin icons. Also changed the naming in the source so it says PPCoin instead of Bitcoin. The client should still be under the same link, but for those who don't know it: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/75013537/PPCoin.7zI would encourage other miners using the GUI to donate to xisalty for his hard work

What effect does proof of stake have on a services wallet? I see there's a thread that's run that does proof of stake mining. What does this do to existing coins older than X days in a users wallet? Are they consumed? Or are they sent from one address to another?
There's an RPC command 'reservebalance'. What does this do exactly? Should a merchant use 'reservebalance' to ensure they have funds available to service clients while proof of stake calculations are going on? What's the CPU usage like of that ongoing proof of stake mining thread?

When stake is generated it's basically paid to the same address/key where the coins belong to inside the coinstake transaction. In the getinfo output it would be transferred from 'balance' to 'stake' and held there for maturity before it can return back to balance. For a service hot wallet this might not be preferable. If you want all coins to be always available for withdrawal you can set 'reservebalance' configuration to a large amount (larger than your balance) then stake won't be generated in that case. The reservebalance configuration basically instructs the stake minter to keep the balance from falling below this number. CPU usage should be limited as it only uses one thread and normally it shouldn't be 100% on the thread either.

Ok hi guys, Some of you may know me from the Bitcoin or Litecoin side of things... Im quite often on BTC-E and here. I have now reached my total LTC I want and now wish to switch to an alternate currency. I have heard mentions of PPcoin, and well to say the least info is a bit scarce. I wish to throw between 10-20 5870 gpus (roughly 5-8MH on LTC) towards ppcoin but I have questions... if someone could answer these categorically I would appreciate this alot and Im sure the developers would appreciate the extra network hash: 1. What are the main improvements over other cryptocurrencies? 2. Where can I get the client and miners for PPcoin... and are they GUI based? 3. Can I have url(s) of exchanges accepting PPcoin. 4. Are there any pools for PPcoin? 5. Where is it possible to see network hash and/or breakdown of pools/solo. Like I said I will be very appreciative, and as a sign of goodwill I will donate my FULL first days earnings on PPcoin to whoever manages to get me mining whether it be pool or solo.

Hi, still need help starting to mine? Difficulty is rising quickly so pool mining may be the way to go. I like this pool http://ppcpool.us.to/ It's easy to set up and has low stales. #1 Get cgminer http://ck.kolivas.org/apps/cgminer/#2 Download the ppcoin 0.2.0 client http://sourceforge.net/projects/ppcoin/files/#3 Install and run the client. It's located within the daemon folder. #4 Start a command window (in windows go to start and type in cmd). Then go to where the client is installed on your hard drive. Use the "cd" command (without the "") to change directory. Example: "cd\" will take you to your C: drive. Then "cd program files (x86)" will get you into your program files folder. #5 Go into the daemon folder. Example: "cd program files (x86)\ppcoin\daemon" from the C: drive #6 Type in "ppcoind getinfo" and hit enter. If you started the client before it should output some info about your wallet and the blockchain. #7 Type in "ppcoind getnewaddress". This address will be your username at the pool and your payment address. #8 Run cgminer and enter "ppcpool.us.to:9942" for the pool URL, the output of the getnewaddress command is your username and the password can be whatever you want (it's unimportant). #9 Go to http://ppcpool.us.to/ and look for your username (address) in the front page after a while. You should have submitted shares. If not, there's a problem. Hope this is through and clear. PXSA8T4qVCrTneJCgPSDDULwcJGn7ZqDmr Edited for clarity. Edit #2: The Koolio told me in PM that I won the bounty but has failed to pay out. In addition The Koolio threatened to steal whatever bitcoins I have if I posted what happened. As a result I've requested a scammer tag for The Koolio. My request can be found here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=112427.0

You can use the GUI client or the daemon, whichever you prefer For the mining software anything usable for bitcoin is usable
